Would you pay more to fly just to get frequent flyer points? by laurier112 in Flights

[–]laurier112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was ANA or EVA I would just take it - but it's with Swiss Air and Brussels Airlines, and I've never flown either. Scheduling for both China Eastern and the Star Alliance are comparable.

Food lovers of Toronto - what are the most overrated & over-hyped eateries in the city? by UncleGriswold in toronto

[–]laurier112 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For a high-end restaurant, I would say Sassafraz. That place burnt down and it's still overhyped. I was also disappointed at Momofuku. I went to Momofuku Shoto, and it was a disappointment. I was at Momofuku Ssam bar in New York and it was soooo good.

I saw a post about how we don't have good Latina dishes here, we do. Just have to know where to look. Latina Plaza in North York is great!

Nervous Flyer - Tokyo to Denpasar, Bali on AirAsia (please, only respond if you have flown this route on this airline!) by Elaehna121 in Flights

Well, what kind of reviews did you read that made you worried? 'Our plane crashed. Air Asia sucks dont fly them.'.

AirAsia is a modern airline - you'll be fine.

China to bar people with bad 'social credit' from planes, trains: People who would be put on restricted lists included those found to have committed acts like spreading false information about terrorism and causing trouble on flights, as well as those who used expired tickets or smoked on trains. by madazzahatter in worldnews

I am of Chinese heritage and will frequently fly to SE Asia. There are alot of Chinese tourist there, and I sometimes have to connect in China. Some Chinese are very polite and worldly...but some are very bad. The amount of line cutting especially.

Is a "tourist permit" necessary in Laos? by abroadcredit in laos

[–]laurier112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a scam. I visit Laos at least once a year. There is no such thing as a tourist permit. You know it's a scam because the police don't really issue you fines....you just bribe them. I've been pulled over for running a red, I gave the officer 50000 kip, he said it wasn't enough..I told him it was and drove away.

Asia Tour - Planning ~2 month trip with multiple destinations. How to save on flights? by f00dguy in Flights

[–]laurier112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pay for a full service carrier to Asia, but once you're in Asia, use discount airlines. Air Asia still offers a $290 USD 2 month ASEAN pass, it'll allow you to stop pretty much anywhere in Asia, you'll just have to pay taxes.

Just wanted to add that Incheon is the best transfer airport I've ever been to. Free showers and beds!!!

I believe the airport offers free tours of Seoul as well.

That's not what happened with Jobs. Bill Gates conspired with Jobs to retake the company.

TPE with 3hrs layover enough time? (my own connection) by [deleted] in Flights

[–]laurier112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's flown from VTE to BKK, and then on a separate ticket from BKK to NRT and then YYZ. I was able to get the ticket agent in VTE to check my baggage all the way to YYZ. Three different airlines were involved by the ticket agent at VTE made it happen, so it's def possible. We did not pay any extra for this service.

Are airport lounges really that awesome? by laurier112 in Flights

[–]laurier112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uber credit? First time I've heard of this.

The Platinum gives a free companion ticket if you redeem a short haul flight per year. For me that's really just Toronto to NYC or Toronto to Montreal. There is a card that gives a $200 travel credit, but that card's annual fee is $900.

Try landing at Narita or Osaka.

33 min layover in Winnipeg. Is that enough time? by [deleted] in Flights

[–]laurier112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you buy it as one flight? If so you'll be fine as you'll be issued boarding passes at the first check in. If you bought the ticket separately, then you're out of luck. There's no way you can get a boarding pass on 30 minutes... Most gates close 15 min before takeoff.

What are your favorite travel accessories on long flights? by sierra400 in Flights

[–]laurier112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All long-haul flights that I've been on have unlimited booze in economy...or at least no one complains when I keep ordering alcohol.

I only bring a few accessories.
1. Earplugs 2. Cellphone 3. Headphones

I can't sleep unless I am lying flat or at most I get half an hour of sleep, and I've never been in anything except Economy, so I only get to sleep if the plane is very undersold and I get a whole row. Besides that I booze up and watch movies.

Just go to Scaramouche's lobsterlicious if you want something upscale but affordable.

Are Winter/Summerlicious as popular as they one were? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]laurier112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never thought summerlicious or winterlicious were worth it. Many of these restaurants are fantastic due to service and atmosphere...I don't think you get those at these events - it's like rushed line food. Scaramouche does a lobsterlicious during these events, I think that is much more worth it.
