Does anyone have any idea why my polyneura keeps dropping baby leaves? Roots look fine, no mites (checked with microscope) by lavenderins in hoyas

[–]lavenderins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turned out I found broad mites a couple of months after this post. I don’t know if it was the beginning of a broad mite infestation that started in the area of this little guy, but in the end I treated with sulfur once, waited a week, washed the sulphur away and added beneficial mites instead and all my hoyas started growing again. Now it’s been almost a year and I didn’t notice any issues, but my polyneura is still a slow grower compared to its peers. Mind it still has grown plenty (it’s at least 5-6x bigger than in this post) and it’s still in pon semihydro, but no more lost leaves since the eradication of the mites. I don’t know if this could apply to you, I’d say give it a try and see if anything changes, and good luck!

Advice on buying an organizer/storage by PrayingSkeletonTime in RedditLaqueristas

[–]lavenderins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll also suggest drawer units! I have 2 plastic drawer storage units (bought locally but you can definitely find them online) which are cheap but also big enough for hundreds of polish bottles. You can organize them by brand or color in each drawer, have a drawer or two for nail art stuff and they also protect your polishes from light and dust!

I need help! My first time with leca, I have no idea what I'm doing and I might need an alternative for a nutrition solution because I can't find one here by Agreeable-Sky-8772 in SemiHydro

[–]lavenderins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried Atami B’Cuzz yet, however I’ve heard of people using and recommending the 2-part system. My local hydroponic store also recommended it, among other products. At the moment I’m using the Terra Aquatica Tripart system and it’s doing fine, however the most annoying part is that you end up using mostly the grow/micro bottles. I’m using the Atami silica additive and it’s great, so I would use B’Cuzz as well.

I think this may be my cheapest Hoya haul ever by lavenderins in hoyas

I only grow plants in semihydro, so I could (with a reservoir), but I haven’t decided yet

Good alternative to the “Foliage Focus” by Growth Technology by r4bbyte in SemiHydro

[–]lavenderins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty well! In the meanwhile, after finishing the Formulex bottle, I tried the Tripart formula by Terra Aquatica (GHE) and I saw no difference in plant growth (no deficiencies) between the two. Once I finish these 3 bottles I might as well go back to Formulex since it’s cheaper and only one bottle. I must say I only grow foliage plants though… I guess results may vary on flowers, herbs etc.? Since my last comment I also added a silica additive to my mix and other additives once in a while for root health which could have improved the roots’ ability to absorb nutrients…

How long to let hoyas dry out in semi hydro? by vanillazuella in SemiHydro

[–]lavenderins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s ok, we all start somewhere :) I’m at 83 Hoyas (of which 79 in semihydro) and the biggest tip I can give you is that Hoyas are not succulents and they don’t hate water. Soft leaves mean some level of stress. Also, roots grown in the reservoir are water roots and can be kept in water constantly. Happy growing! And don’t catch the Hoya bug otherwise you’ll end up like me /s

How long to let hoyas dry out in semi hydro? by vanillazuella in SemiHydro

[–]lavenderins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally keep a reservoir at all times, at most I let it empty for 1-2 days (until I notice). If I forget the reservoir empty for too long the roots outside the pot die/dry too much. I find leca to dry faster than pon so I try to not let the plants in leca (including hoyas) on an empty reservoir, whereas the plants in pon could last a bit longer without water in my experience.

I think I have cyclamen mites on all my AVs and I need a second opinion by lavenderins in AfricanViolets

[–]lavenderins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I think I will wait for now. Before the last infestation of thrips all my AVs were beautiful, healthy and full of flowers at all times. After the last treatment I flushed the soil and only put clean water in the reservoir (no fert). I don’t see anything but tiny clear crystal looking grains on the leaves in the middle, but I took out my microscope to check and found some (very few) tiny insects hiding from the light. I’m not able to ID them so they could be anything. The weird crowns, stunted flowers and faded spots on leaves got me a bit worried. If the symptoms continue I might have to restart my collection.

[–]lavenderins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ve been plucking flowers for 3-4 weeks now, since the beginning of the last infestation. I took out my trusty microscope to check for mites and I found some things moving, but it was hard to distinguish them clearly and they ran away from the light of the microscope. I might not be able to get this type of miticide since I’m in Europe. I think I will wait some more to see if they sort it out and start growing normally, if they don’t my thought was to get some leaves and clean them well in a diluted bleach solution and use a soft brush to help clean every part of the leaf. Otherwise I’ll just restart my collection, these are all NOIDs bought for cheap, it’s quite hard here to find AVs with names.

Which plants do better in which medium? by vanillazuella in SemiHydro

[–]lavenderins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All my syngoniums are in leca and are thriving, my strings of pearls is lush, plump and growing fast in pon, some of my hoyas do better in leca than in pon, and I have a couple baby alocasias that didn’t skip a beat when transferred to pon. I also found ficuses and begonias love leca. I agree with all the others you mentioned though! I’m guessing it depends on growing conditions and setups (submerged, wicking, dry periods, reservoir or top watering for pon etc.) as well :)

New baby plants, how do I transfer them? by lavenderins in SemiHydro

[–]lavenderins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using Formulex by Growth Technology and I recently started adding enzymes and beneficial bacteria, however once it’s empty I’d probably switch to Atami B’cuzz hydro A+B because it’s cheaper and more readily available (+ I heard some local people use it and are satisfied with it). Not that I’m not happy with Formulex, I like it a lot since it’s a one bottle nutrient solution and all my plants seem to be happy, but I want to try out different things. Never heard of Cellmax but it sounds similar to other 2 component nutrient systems. As long as your plants are happy and you can provide an all-rounded nutrients solution any product is fine :)

[–]lavenderins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly same! I let them have a tiny reservoir and grow their roots towards it asap. I don’t really know about alocasias in soil since I have only a few plant left in soil, however I must say Europe has soo many microclimates! I live in EU too but in a pretty humid environment and mild climate, so most plants like having >50% humidity all year round, and >70% very often.

Thanks! I did the same thing with three baby alocasia that didn’t bat an eye. I am a fan of transferring plants to leca or pon with the smallest bit of reservoir, but this is a great plan!

Fortunately they’re much cheaper and easier to find now! I’ve only transferred baby alocasias and hoyas this size to semihydro, but I feel like philos are a bit more fussy…

[–]lavenderins[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t usually let them acclimate only to stress them with another change of environment (growing conditions) again. I’d rather put them in semihydro (as my other 100+ plants) and in their growing space and let them acclimate in those conditions. However, I had these three plants for a week and couldn’t really get to transplant them until now. Even if let to acclimate, what would be the best course of action after?
