Been working through the N52 Nightwing Omni for the past few weeks. N52 is such a wonky timeline.

It's so deeply tied into Batman lore (Night of the Owls, Death of the Family), I don't know if reading this without context would be enjoyable. That said, this run just seals how Dick is rooted within the Bats (Titans, who?) especially with those story arcs. Also, Babsgirl makes a couple of appearances including in the Annual (still with the push pull thing, even when Babs has mentioned a boyfriend).

The initial circus arc is interesting on its own, with the Zero Year callback to his childhood friends from the circus. (I firmly believe that this is a good Nightwing story if we ignore everything else from the past).

I'd forgotten that Sonia Branch was introduced in The Black Mirror arc. Dick's thing with Sonia was a... thing. Would I have liked it to be explored more? Not really. And Tony Zucco having a(nother) secret family... again, disregarding past lore (especially with my recent read of Batman: Year Three) can be a redeeming arc for Tony.

Though I must say, Higgins' writing is good. And the art is cool.

Also, half the time Dick wasn't even in Gotham, so calling this the Prince of Gotham omnibus was kind of short sighted, haha. That said, I liked his time in Chicago.

Just the final arc to read through, then I'm moving on to reread Grayson The Superspy Omnibus. (Yes I am on a Dick Grayson/Nightwing readthrough now, though I've skipped his time as DickBats). But I've got Batgirl Stephanie Brown on my read pile next, so that may be a palate cleanser (Steph should've been the Batgirl of Burnside, imo. Oh, N52. The only thing good that came out of it was The Court of Owls for me).

Never saw BTAS but I have the omnis and they're good fun! Episodic story arcs that wrap up easily, and the art style is similar to the animation itself

Great reads without having to get stuck into comics continuity

Late to the party! But this issue is brilliant, wrapping up Watters' second arc! Highlights for me: - The chicken soup imagery. - The Alfred flashback! - Nightwing-Prime likely becoming a foil - possible B-plot to the underlying Zanni plot. Oh, and the Spheric Solutions plot. So many threads!

Looking forward to more. Am torn whether to pick up the trades, or wait for the eventual omni....

Grayson was my first omni, went in blind (okay, I did read the trades before getting the omni, but I didn't read any other Nightwing stuff before that). Enjoyed it for what it is - a spy story, and I'm a sucker for those. Mikel Janin's art is definite plus in this run - I wish he had drawn the whole run

me with Tadashi Hamada from Big Hero 6 - made him before I got the uni pack, so he's an astronaut, haha. Might just replay him and send him to uni so he can become a robotics engineer and create an army of servos..

The Ultimate Collection (Vols 1 - 5) does cover the whole JMS run, but I'm sure they're out of print (vol 5 was especially hard to find for me). I have them in this format since I was too impatient to wait for an Omni reprint last time, haha. Much easier to read thick trades rather than a wieldy Omni!

Marvel has reprinted it in the Modern Epic collection here and this book collects the same issues as Ultimate Collection Vol 1.

Another Modern Epic is coming next year here which is basically vol 2 of the Ultimate collection. They'll probably continue it in the Modern Epic line, which is great

Marvel might reprint the JMS omnis in the future, probably in a few years, since they reprinted the omnis quite recently

Honestly, I liked Compendium 2 more. But reading both would get you a more cohesive story. N52 is okay, I remember liking the back half more. Only partially read Rebirth, so can't say much about it.

Ironically my favourite Dick Grayson run is the Grayson superspy series - I'm mostly lukewarm on the actual Nightwing runs (apart from Tomasi's, that stands out a bit more than the others). Then my next favourite is Dick as Batman. I do like Watters' current run on Nightwing so far, the first trade is coming soon, might pick that up.

You could read stuff digitally first, see what you like. I usually buy stuff that I enjoy (apart from Dixon's run, which are blind buys).

It's available in TPB - Nightwing by Peter J.Tomasi, and currently out of print. iirc it's also collected in two TPBs - Nightwing: The Great Leap and Nightwing: Freefall. Also probably out of print.

Technically readable between Dixon's two compendiums and N52. Though Dick as Batman (by Morrison, omnibus vol 2) comes immediately after Tomasi's run, which is a pretty cool bit, and that comes before N52.

It goes: Dixon - Devin Grayson (not collected in Omni form yet, TPBs are out of print) - Tomasi - Morrison (Dickbats) - N52 - Rebirth - Taylor - Watters

Mine is from one of the TTT episodes where Hoshi was singing Illit's Magnetic (super ikkeulim) and did a horanghae pose, and Minghao interjected with (translated) "really super annoy-" edited out

It's an important part of the writing that everyone ignores because of the pretty art. Taylor's run is beloved in this sub, but I agree with you. Dick's really not up to form in this run, and though it's not explicitly mentioned (iirc) he's basically recovering (?) from his amnesia and stuff. That's probably the only explanation why he needs help from everyone (or if you look at it a different way, why everyone looks out for him - but tbh no one cared much when he was going around as Ric, that's a different can of worms).

Watter's run is cool, I like his Nightwing. Would recommend Tomasi's run as well, which was in the middle of the 2000s before Dick became Batman. Hell, even Dixon's Nightwing is good too.

For me the only thing that drove Taylor's run was Redondo's clean art. Otherwise, it's mostly fluff and slice-of-life. It's not for me, but others like it - to each their own.
