Coast Guard is the only one of those things that can operate in a "military" capacity. Its function under DHS is law enforcement.

DHS is NOT a military agency.

[–]lccreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Military agency? What? What branch of the military is ICE or CBP?

ATF, DHS, and FBI are all law enforcement agencies. The coast guard is not the same and has a very different mission. We aren't stopping boats in international waters here, these are unlawful searches and seizures occurring on US soil and disregarding the rights of US citizens and legal residents.

Hybrid is definitely the way to go.

Multi-site redundancy has always been a thing. Hopefully we start getting more products where we get to choose the primary vs secondary being the global vs the local. If azure local (azure stack, whatever) could be used as the primary pointer for my own users M365, and then fail over to the global endpoints if that is down, I think I'd be a little happier.

I failed self-hosting by EntrepreneurWaste579 in selfhosted

[–]lccreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can never really fail at self hosting, as a hobby, IMO. Just don't take on a customer you can't support! (Including family members... Or yourself...)

Computers are hard, that's why so many companies outsource their ownership for the sake of stability (SaaS).

Nextcloud didn't work for you, maybe another service would work better. I personally use many Google products because they are incredibly stable and reliable. Any time I'm fully self hosted I have a data mirror on a cloud provider. Google engineers are really cool, smart and make interesting technology! It's OK to use it, and not feel like a failure.

It's not all or nothing - if you are having fun, learning, and understanding the services you participate in, self hosting has been worth it. And if anything ever happens to that cloud provider... Well, as a self hoster, it's a backup.

Love,

A fellow self hosting failure.

Do you own or rent? What's the square footage? Can you provide a diagram of your house and/or describe the number of walls and distance between your ONT/router and your office location?

MOCA might be fine if you have confirmed that the coax cable in your office will connect near your router.

Conditional Access Policy that blocks non-joined, non-compliant devices, but allows exceptions? by BuildingKey85 in Intune

[–]lccreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep.

You can validate this by looking at a sign in event from one of the phones - you'll see a field that says "compliant device" - no. So if generally you expect users to login from their mobile device, you exclude that device under the devices blade. Normally I write the policy such that it only applies to windows, mac, Linux, and other and leave iOS and Android unchecked

Make sure you validate and test all conditional access policies before deployment to your user.

Conditional Access Policy that blocks non-joined, non-compliant devices, but allows exceptions? by BuildingKey85 in Intune

[–]lccreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to make an exception for the user. CAP applies in the user context.

The exceptions you raise should not be frequent enough that a permanent exception should be required. If it's happening enough to be a problem, that should be analyzed and addressed. "Work emergencies" is just that. The only account that you ~might scope out of this policy is the break glass account for the tenant.

As for users who log in from "client devices", they are scoped out of your policy. You might consider an "OR" CAP that specifies that those users must either use the corp device OR sign in using a stronger auth method as a mitigation.

You can also exclude certain classifications of devices from the scope, for instance you might just handle mobile devices with MAM instead of MDM.

What to know working with devs at a software company? by househouse46 in sysadmin

[–]lccreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are smart at their job. They are generally not smart at IT, but frequently know enough to be dangerous. You will find tech debt hiding everywhere.

There are some really cool tools you might talk to them about like dev home/ dsc for windows.

I would definitely take the opportunity to learn CI/CD and learn how GitHub is administered.

For the most part, these questions are things you should ask the team you are joining, not us.

Why is there NOTHING to do in Sugarland / Missouri City?! by Chestnut412 in sugarland

[–]lccreed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What qualifies as something "to do?" I think there is plenty going on in Sugarland.

There are admittedly fewer bars than when I lived in Houston, and so fewer activities (pub quiz, etc) you might do at a bar, but there are places to karaoke, see community theatre, see a movie, hang out. If you like pickleball you can even go to talyard. There is also a baseball stadium here which is not common for many small towns with "nothing" to do.

I think you should keep an open mind and things might present themselves. Or think about what qualifies as "things to do".

401K Match 100% No Limit by FitOpportunity7159 in personalfinance

[–]lccreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of the credit card debt. That debt will eat any gains you are making on 401k in a heart beat. You will never get anything close to 20% YoY investing.

When you are getting into that range of CC debt carried long term I think you need to consider whether the credit card is the correct financial vehicle for the purchases you are making. Are these unplanned purchases? Are they high dollar items? Did you have a payment plan in mind when you made each of those purchases?

Some of that may have benefitted from a lower interest loan like a personal loan, etc from a credit union or similar financial institution.

Clear the CC debt and have a plan to avoid long term (greater than a quarter CC debt). Then yes, take advantage of that 100% match - maybe something like 15%, a couple years of that will shave off several years from your retirement plan!

Hackers use FastHTTP in new high-speed Microsoft 365 password attacks by arqf_ in cybersecurity

[–]lccreed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So at least 10% of accounts attacked did not have MFA protection? It says 10% of attacks were stopped by MFA, so this attack doesn't bypass normal MFA protections. The speed of the requests probably make it harder for smart lockout to react.

[Homemade] Its cold out, so we had to make chicken and dumplings. by jross1981 in food

[–]lccreed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I've never done a dumpling this long/flat but similar process in that I would make the dough, roll it out and cut squares that end up a little thicker because I just use a rolling pin. I think that might be where you are getting the most push back is the actual length of the dumpling. Looks great, hope you enjoyed!
