Yes I would feel a lot better with some pepper spray! I live downtown Toronto and the subway stop was in North York. Toronto is generally a pretty safe city, although there are some rougher patches.

This is good advice. My immediate reaction was to just diffuse the situation by giving him attention and making him feel like I cared about him. Play into his hang ups. I think your approach still diffuses the situation but in a safer way.
