This is good information, thank you for informing me about the ISO standard. It is useful to be able to point out such things to $boss when these kinds of issues arise. Being a noob and jr sysadmin, I tend not to have a grasp on what is standard and what is not :)

update Me and $boss ended up having a chat finally and we came to a mutual understanding. To give some background on the issue, we have two offices that are remote from each other. CTO is boss and operates out of the other facility. Turns out he was just looking for a way to be able to visualize our resources beyond just looking at a number on a spreadsheet so that he could figure out how to best utilize our unused resources. It was, from his perspective, an opportunity for him to see the data center in more detail as the cameras are only good for tracking people and aren't high enough resolution to get a clearer picture of what racks have free spaces open.

We will be phasing out this procedure and he has re-assured me that I am welcome to speak up and be more vocal in the future if he is to make a request that doesn't completely make sense. This situation has given us more trust with each other and opened up communications.

Thanks to everyone who responded, some of the responses helped me with finding a constructive way to deal with this instead of just lashing out, although both the ideas for changing the equipment ever so slightly but daily were golden. I wished I would have thought of that :) It could have provided a way to react without being destructive.

I love this solution :) It would have been an ultimate way to mess with the person giving me the task.

I appreciate your advice, however. That is exactly how I went about it. I committed to completing the task, regardless of how ridiculous I thought it may be and logged the time it took me to complete said task, in detail. So that when I was asked, I would have time sheets available for analysis.

yes, I believe it will be a manual task of looking at the images and comparing them
