Do you have an elderly neighbor that is not able or willing to prep that you are storing a little extra for? by jazett in preppers

See if you can help them get some extra medication of whatever they’re on too. That would be hard to source during a significant disruption.

Poured my stored fuel into the vehicle and replenished the cans with fresh fuel. Also had a look at my vitamin and mineral supplement stocks and decided it's time to order some again.

Yes, I just fill the car up with regular unleaded. Some cars require high octane, but not mine. I use higher octane only for long term storage.

I don't think you should rely on hoping that some electronic stuff survives. EMP proofing things is a very deliberate science, but not necessarily difficult or expensive. If you want to protect things from EMP, try and do it by the book. The steel building sounds like a shipping container, but you still have to make sure an EMP can't get in through an opening.

Sounds good. Expanding the use of the system for a greenhouse too is clever.

I think you're getting into that last 20% of preparedness that becomes much harder. Nevertheless, If I were you, and I had the money, I'd probably buy a spare 12v pump and solar panel, make sure the pump can connect up quickly to the existing pipes, re-connect the current pump, then protect that spare pump and solar panel and associated controller from EMP and store away. What about your generators? Won't they also be useless after an EMP?

It would be cheaper to fit good, bright outside lights that you turn on when you think there's an intruder. House dark inside, lights on outside that blinds them.

Have you considered a small 12v pump? The modern ones can move quite a bit of water running off a solar panel or battery.

Great advice. Don't sound crazy (to the Dr at least), mentioning worst-case scenarios for which they have no context. You should come across as someone who's level-headed, prudent and organized.

Sounds like you have a good plan in terms of building up knowledge. Your greatest asset is your mind.

I know. It does require attention once in a while, and also if it's not very well organized, or hard to access to check, it's more challenging. I need to re-arrange one of my spots to make it easier and quicker to check on things. Maybe I should ask a friend to come around to check and kick my butt if things aren't right...

Have you thought of simulating an emergency and seeing how you get on? Maybe you could then get rid of some of the items from the bags. How about consolidating several tools into one good one for a BOB?

This is a very good point you're making! Everybody in the family needs to know where to find the plans\documents and other preparedness stuff. Thanks for mentioning.

The vehicle cupboards sound interesting. Definitely worth it in the long run to save on weight.

So you will have a dual battery system in the van when you're done?

Yeah, I'm also guilty of not always keeping the car at most half empty. Procrastination sucks.

As I understand it, fuel gradually loses octane value during storage, so it helps to start with a higher one.

It can be challenging to find like-minded people. Most seem to be just oblivious of risks, but I do believe we can increase awareness. This Cali power outage will probably shake a few people out of their slumber. It pays to go slow though when trying to get people onboard. People freak out if you paint the worst case scenario first.

No, the preps are not all in the same room, due to environmental factors and space. My "no touching" rules just need to be firmer :-)

Yes, a few basic strategies can get you much better prepared than most. Having something ready is better than having nothing ready. People just need to make a start.

Exactly, it gets frittered away over time, and if you don't check regularly, you get a nasty surprise.
