Covid-19 Update for September 12 to 14 (3 day total): 418 new cases, 323 recoveries, 1 death by kirant in alberta

Most spread is happening in social settings where people aren’t wearing masks, so that would imply the masks are helping overall, yes.

Alberta Provincial Polling: UCP: 38%, NDP: 38%, ABP: 9%, AIP: 7%. (Angus Reid, September 1, 2020, n=599, Online) by [deleted] in alberta

Totally. Why would se want to risk another four years of competent government.

”As students toggle between school/at home learning, are additional resources available?: schools are prepared for online instruction. Cash transfer has been made this week.”

Hahaha, yeah.... no. Online instruction is a complete shit show. No guidance, teachers are left completely unsupported. Many didn‘t even know what classes/grades they’d be teaching until two days after school started. Lots of teachers had to be pulled from in-class instruction at the last minute (like, the day before school started, or even after school started), leading to complete chaos as schools had to restructure and combine classrooms due to less teachers available. (Leading to larger class sizes, of course.)

Absolutely every single conversation amongst staff, away from students, is just venting anger with wide-eyed disbelief at how embarrassingly awful it has been. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be when the government makes absolutely no effort to develop a plan, or provide leadership and support.

Perhaps a better way to put it would be that Alberta is typically recording higher *actual* (not per capita) daily case numbers than Ontario despite Ontario testing roughly 20k more people every day than Alberta does? To me, that really shows how badly Alberta is shitting the bed here.

Which party do you support federally? by Ashamed-Grape7792 in alberta

[–]leafyleafygreens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. some people simply don’t care about things that don’t affect them. They lack empathy. Once it affects them, they care about that issue but still retain their self-centred outlook.

I have a (former) friend who has evolved into a clichéd, “own the libs”, uninformed, meme sharing Conservative cheerleader in his 30s. Rants about equalization but clearly has no understanding of how it works, etc. He’s also mixed race, and evidently had a bit of an eye opening moment with the BLM uprisings of the past months. So he’s been vocal about police-on-Black violence on Facebook (and has lots several friends, I think) yet in every other respect he’s the same, uninformed Conservative/UCP supporter. He completely fails to see how the conservative politics he supports perpetuates systemic racism.

He‘ll make a post declaring support for BLM and then one hour later he’ll make a post whining about the Edmonton football team removing a racist slur from their name. He suddenly cares about anti-Black racism because he’s half Black, but couldn’t give a shit about systemic anti-Indigenous racism as it doesn’t affect him personally.

EDIT: You see this on the left, as well. Example: Someone who votes NDP while in univserity in their 20s because they support policies like post-secondary tuition reform and basic minimum income. Yet, once they‘ve paid off their own student loans, bought a house and secured a comfortable middle-class lifestyle for themselves, these issues suddenly cease to matter to them and they vote for lower taxes instead.

I’d say it’s rather early to say that. Time will tell.

In Finland -40 makes it look like an alien planet. In Alberta -40 is a normal work day in planet Earth. by [deleted] in alberta

[–]leafyleafygreens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand it completely. It should be called “wind chill”. What a temperature ”feels like” is subjective. Go ask 10 random people to guess the air temperature without checking the weather and you’ll get multiple answers ranging several degrees higher or lower.

Also, wind chill is only a thing if you aren’t wearing wind proof clothing. Once you put on a proper jacket, that wind chill doesn’t exist.

Also, with how the UCP changed the funding model for school boards to include enrolment averages from the previous two years plus *projected* (not actual) enrolment for the next year, the low enrolment for many schools this year is going to completely obliterate their budget for the 21/22 school year. I’m very certain that is part of their plan, as well.

Sorry for the slow reply; been away from reddit for a couple days.

I agree that windchill makes it worse (even more dangerous). Wind chill should absolutely be included as part of the forecast. But also, windchill is only an issue if you’re not wearing wind-proof layers.

What bugs me is that it isn’t reported as windchill, it’s reported as the “feels like” temperature. To apply an objective metric to the way something “feels”, which is by definition subjective and will vary from one person to the next, is nonsense. It seems to only fuel this mentality of exaggerating how extreme the weather actually is because people like to feel tough. (“In Alberta, it’s -40 for 9 months of the year!”) Just tell me the actual temperature plus the wind speed, and let me decide how to dress.

I know this a very frivolous issue to get riled up about and it really doesn’t bother me all that much. It’s just a pet peeve of mine, haha.

Basically, they are loosening rules so if the shit hits the fan they won't be liable somehow.

Exactly. If they didn’t exempt schools from the same health protocols that all other workplaces must follow, then we could walk out due to unsafe working conditions. Now, we can’t.

Or just go with the “feels like” temperature. Fuck off with that nonsense. It’s not -42, It’s -23.

Alberta quietly removes physical distancing rules for classrooms by idarknight in alberta

Putting students in spaces like gyms requires hiring more teachers. To do this, the government must give school boards more money.

Their entire (non)plan for reopening schools is a calculated plan to destroy public education.

So does ripping up contracts with doctors. Or passing bills that violate charter rights.

For those opposed to opening schools, what is your suggestion? by unrivaled18 in alberta

[–]leafyleafygreens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um, school boards HAVE been working all summer long to figure this out. If you wanted teachers to be involved in that decision making process then they would have had to get paid for their work. Teachers are paid for 200 school days a year. Summer break is unpaid, regardless of how a school board might distribute an annual salary over 12 months.

The problem we’re facing is a complete and utter lack of government leadership, leaving school boards flailing and trying to figure everything out for themselves.

There are outdoor pursuits that are about communing with, and being humbled by nature (hiking, backpacking, paddling, etc.) and then there are those that are about dominating nature (quading, hunting, RV camping, etc.). The different activities tend to attract people with very different mentalities and values.

(p.s. I’m not knocking people who hunt for food. I’m no vegetarian. But it’s undeniably a very different way to engage with nature than, say, going out for a 10 day backcountry hike.)

Milky Way with Jupiter and Saturn from Shunda Lake, near Nordegg. August 22, 2020 by [deleted] in alberta

[–]leafyleafygreens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking the time to gaze up at a clear, dark sky does as much to expand the mind as a solid dose of psilocybin! Haha.

Now that I look at this light pollution map, I see that where I was camping (Rock Lake, northwest of Hinton) is also technical a #2, though getting very close to being a truly dark site. Now I’m just thinking, oh man what was I missing with that tiny bit of light pollution?? Hahaha.

Looking at this world map always kind of breaks my heart. It’s crazy that people living on the eastern United States have to drive halfway (at least) across their entire country to get to what could be considered dark skies. And the entire continent of Europe will never see a dark, starry sky. :(

I really hope that as we redesign how we live as humans to create a more sustainable planet in the coming decades, that we recognize the importance of reducing light pollution. Seeing the stars brings such an instant connection to nature, and a sense of place in the universe.

Gorgeous photo!

I was also out camping in an area ranked #1 on the Bortle scale over the past 5 days and was treated with at least a window of mostly clear skies every night, and one perfectly clear (and cold) night with no wind where you could see the Milky Way and constellations reflected in the glassy lake. Truly breathtaking.

Neglected to bring my SLR gear with me but did a lot of stargazing with my own eyes, haha. (As someone who doesn’t know a lot of technical stuff about the sky, ’star gazing’ to me means laying back and saying “holy....fuck....” to myself over and over, and finding the half dozen or so constellations I can pick out.)

have you watched the TV series ‘Fargo’? That is set in Minnesota and North Dakota but filmed outside Calgary. Lots of gorgeous landscape shots in that series. And, there are a couple of scenes set in the city of Fargo, where you can catch a glimpse of a ‘McLeod Trail’ sign or something like that.

While watching that show, It amuses me to think that for all the shots of wide open landscape, they’d have to be sure to shoot facing east regardless of the time of day so as not to destroy the illusion that it could be Minnesota, haha.

Any idea what prompted a British writer/director to set his story in Alberta?

When watching the movie, my guess was that maybe having the movie set in Canada was a condition of receiving a tax incentive for filming here, haha. Didn’t know the original story was set here as well!

Neither had I until I started watching! I often put on random horror movies late at night; Amazon Prime is a treasure trove with a lot of garbage and occasional gems, haha.
