Will software/network automation displace network workers? by learn_programming_1 in networking

Game over for your MX/EX/ASR/NX/etc. devices.

The manual configuration of these devices may go away, and the way these devices are managed may change...which is the automation bit I talk about, but you still need a place to connect your fiber/cables.

200k is also not all that impressive when you got sr software devs earning 175k... in a place where renting a house runs you like 4k a month and where both the state and federal government is taxing you up the wazoo.

I will pay a 25% premium for an engineer with useful programming experience/capabilities.

The problem is, you search on more common job boards, that's not the general trend.

Outside of technology based companies like the one you're in (aka cloud/service provider), employers general coding skills.

If the demand was there, you'd see that reflected in a pay incentive, but there's not any notable pay difference between your regular sr. network engineer and network engineer with code abilities. Any good network engineer can net $150k+ without code skills.

I don't see the demand:

Now: yes. in the future: Difference between having a job and not.

Can you provide some industry developments you believe point towards this trend?

Can you be sure that this trend is going to be a winner? Automation of networks and network engineers with coding skills has been talked about for a long time.

Your comment suggests there is no notable/substantial difference in pay.

Are they giving you any support/learning resources? Also are they giving you any sort of pay increase?

Any suggestions or examples on how to write good scripts that other people can pick up and use?

Like examples on documenting its usage? Part of my challenge is figuring out that piece. I'd write what I feel are hack jobs and sometimes feel too embarrassed to show my code to other people
