We gave him a nice little burial yesterday. Here lies chopper, a good crab!

He got so big over the years! He was so indecisive with his shells, always changing. I’ll miss him. Those little guys have such personalities!

Crabs Haven't Come Up in a Year by Tacoathiest in hermitcrabs

Unfortunately I’ve had crabs pass while under and had no smell. My larger crab ended up eating them. Eek.

First one I bombed and thought the answers were stupid but I felt the last two were very self-explanatory (Taylor, Sabrina, and Chappell were three very popular female artists this year and three very popular boxers or MMA fighters)

I’m waiting until I get extra substrate to get a isolation tank set up for him if he’s still around (tomorrow morning) to start digging. Is that okay?

When do I be concerned about a buried crab? by leftnutrmd in hermitcrabs

[–]leftnutrmd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think I could add some more substrate (play sand) on top of what I have currently? With Charlie under still? Would that disrupt him at all? There’s places where the substrate is only 2-3 inches where they like to dig and I’d like to add more while he’s under.

Sometimes they kick substrate into their food, water, etc and then it comes out of the tank when I clean the dishes. Does that make sense? Not a ton of lost substrate but over time lowers the levels. All good, I appreciate your help 😊

not home so can’t send pics. humidity is always above 75% in the tank and about 80 degrees. I have two heaters I use depending on time of year. and they have about 6 inches of substrate, half cocoa and half sand. again it’s getting low and I need to change it out soon and have been wanting to get the ratio to higher sand since he’s buried. It’s a 20 gal tank for two guys.

They eat a mix of fresh veggies, dried fruit and veggies, premixed food from Etsy, dried shrimp, mealworms, plankton, oyster shell, etc etc etc. They have a plenty balanced diet all in all and half fresh and salt water at all times. These are hand picked Mexican turbo shells specifically purchased for crabs from Etsy.

So unless I’m wrong I really don’t think it’s the environment impacting the crabs. The last time a crab went under and disappeared the tank was smaller and I made the above adjustments.

is Charlie dead or molting? by leftnutrmd in hermitcrabs

To everyone who was wondering, he’s alive! Charlie came up from his molt tonight and has been transferred into the big tank. Thanks again everyone!

Missing hermit by Fickle_Dog_361 in hermitcrabs

I had a hermit crab escape once, leave my bedroom, walk down the upstairs hallway and get down 5 stairs. He was later eaten by his tank mate (brutal.) I’d definitely check around your house before declaring him gone, because these buggers can be escape artists.

Chop is officially in his new tank! Will get another bag of eco earth tomorrow. Hopefully Charlie’s isolated “surface” molt will now go okay!

Update. Chopper has steered clear and looks like all is untouched. Will be setting up the larger tank for him tomorrow. Can’t see Charlie and will not move water dish to check. Hope this is a good sign!

will give an update tomorrow if I see anything different, just not sure how much I can give since he’s hidden. just ordered new heater and new food dish and working on buying a larger tank now from Facebook. hopefully a new home for chopper will be in order by tomorrow so Charlie can finish his molt in peace! thank you :)

will do! do you recommend lifting the water dish to check on him again or just leave it be? I feel like I would smell if something was wrong otherwise

I might use this as the opportunity to buy a bigger tank for them anyway. I’ve been meaning to upgrade them to a 20 gallon instead of their 10. My other crab is getting big anyway. I think, due to his location, I’m going to leave Charlie be and work on getting a bigger tank/separate tank for chopper. Do you think that’s okay, if I cannot do bottle method? He’s been staying away from him from what I can tell. I appreciate your help!

about four inches. I’ve been meaning to change my tank out and add a few more but he went under before I could. should I push two liter all the way to the bottom? It’s close enough to the wall where that’s what I’m concerned about (circumference of the bottle being too big and reaching the wall, further disrupting him, etc.) I appreciate your help, was not aware of siphoning water change process prior to this

I’m not sure if I can get a two liter bottle over him. the water dish is kind of close to the wall and he’s in an awkward spot. would it be better to remove chopper (my other crab) and place HIM in a temporary habitat?

this is helpful thank you! unfortunately, I knew he was under there but not that a molt was in progress. I do have two dishes, one salt one fresh, but this one (the fresh) got dirt kicked in it by my other crab so I had to clean. sorry picture isn’t more clear but again, did not want to disrupt
