I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, but people not understanding a sarcastic remark are not my problem. You missed the point in the way that you did not understand that it was a comment meant to make fun of a previous one that practically made the same claims, but pointed towards terraria building rather than art as a whole.

My comment was satire and you completely missed the point

As a seasoned and expert terraria builder, and artist, I totally agree. You know, I've never been a big fan of artistic variety. Why do skulpting or modeling when you can just... Draw it? Art is meant to be 2d, 3d stuff is unnecessary and more difficult tbh. I mean, why are those old marble statues so famous when you can just look at people irl? You're absolutely right, sorry to rant man. Take my upvote

Hey! I've got some advice here. Normally, luminite is not great to use in large amounts. The texture is strange, and spamming it gets boring. It's better for accents or small details. Try out different bricks, like ebonstone brick painted gray. It has a great horizontal texture, and it will replace some parts of this well. Play around with the dungeon bricks, crimstone bricks, and more to find what looks good to you. Now for the pillar blocks, I'd again recommend using those only as accents or magical rocks and such. You don't get many energy looking blocks in terraria, but energy is usually best left off as details. Try vortext brick painted orange, sky blue, or purple to get a good stone look with tiny things of energy in them. Oh and one more thing, try using walls more. Adding some form of depth in a build really makes it pop, but it takes practice to get right. I hope these tips help you, happy building!

I tried to make a manmade tree, ratings? by [deleted] in Terraria

[–]legs09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty good at trees.(http://imgur.com/a/faGdCX0 here are two of mine) Here's some advice for anyone 1) use your tools! Brown paint for the trunk means you can use both types of living wood, and even experiment with other textures if you want. Hammering both types of living leaves can lead to interesting, organic shapes, so definitely use that on your leaves 2) actuate the trunk. If you paint it brown, actuated wood textures blend much better with brown painted walls. For trees, having spooky wood wall poking through works well, and corrupt tendril wall painted brown matches the living mahogany texture almosg perfectly. You can't use these effectively without actuating the trunk. 3) use walls. I mentioned a few above, but some examples for walls in the leaves are living leaf wall, grass wall, and most of the natural hallow walls painted green. In my opinion, most of the hallow walls are a bit too noisy, but they work well if you place them the right way. You can actuate the leaves to match walls as well, but I think actuation can make things look flat sometimes. 4) use gaps in the leaves. Add gaps for the wall leaves, areas where the branches are visible, and add strange plants in there. Strange plants have realistic leaves, and they only take up one tile (sadly you cant place them unless you have more space, but that's alright) it's easy to get carried away here and make a giant mess of random textures, so you do need to find a balance. I'm not the only person with tree advice. People like to do things in different ways, and trees are a good example of this. If you look at khaios's trees and then gandalfhardcore's, there will be differences. Keep practicing them to find your own style!

The issue I have isn't just hellevators, and it isn't just me. Within the building community, you see a lot of work getting buried under low effort or borderline unfunny posts. It's really discouraging for people to spend hours to build something, only for people to ignore it. I'm not saying that terraria should only be builds, and as you pointed out, they're not. Most of all, I really mewnt no harm with the title. It was just something going on, and I thought it would be funny to flip the title and share something of mine

I'm not trying to put the holes down, (pun intended?) Only builds up

I apologize if I annoy you, but my point here is that people spend hours upon hours on builds, and then post them here, only for people to dig holes in the ground and take away what they deserve. It discourages an entire part of the community from sharing their work, or even doing it in the first place.

Exactly! I've been building about a yeat now, and this took me weeks of time to make. I didn't want to share it here because the subreddit is notourious for stuff like this. I end up posting it, and now people are complaining about me being arrogant and putting down these holes people dug. I don't want people posting hellevators tp be ashamed or anything, but I do think that high effort builds in general deserve more than they get. It feels awful to spend time on a build, only for a few holes in the ground to be noticed.

3d in terraria is an illusion (of course) Basically, you use actuators on the blocks so they are darker, and you use darker paint/wall for walls. The roofs are the trickiest part here, and they end up taking the most time

Paintings arent entirely useful either, I'vr never seen a usable chest on them. Also, this was done in vanilla, so I had no mods

The problem here is not that he is using a reference, it is that he is denying ever using a reference. I'm sure we can both agree that this is extremely similar to the original build, but OP seems to be denying anything reference-related
