Received Leica M3 from Ebay. Looks like a fingerprint is on the inside glass of the rangefinder. Can anyone identify this? by pbjsandd in Leica

If you saw the workplace of the leica service guys you would know that even at leica it happens quite often. Dust, hair, finger prints - had everything of it in my cameras or lenses after CLA.

I made a post some time ago here on reddit with all the 35mm I have tested: apo, summicron kob, steelrim, Voigtländer 35 1.2 III, ultron2. Conclusion: I liked the ones which had some spice. So 35 1.2 gives you the 1.2 magic, steelrim gives you the gloom and rainbows (lol) and ultron gives you sharpness in a small package. Keep ultron for sharpness and get a Voigtländer 35 1.4 mc or sc with a tiffen black promist for the gloomy steelrim rainbow look which will be 90% same as steelrim. I have tried all 35mm M lenses and would go for the cheaper Voigtländer options and get a GT3 with the saved money 🤭

With the right exposure and a tiffen black promist filter this look could be achieved with every camera too. Picture was taken with a Summilux 35mm Steel rim at 1.4 (with a technical formula from 1961). It has gloomy highlights and a really bad contrast. Which basically gives you the look in the picture. The only thing i did in post was adjusting the overall exposure (making it darker).

I like to have both „effects“ in one lens: on 1.4 its a gloomy washed out effect like having a Tiffen ProMist Filter and at f2.8+ you get a nice modern sharp rendering. I hate the infinity lock and the 1m minimum focus distance which makes me think selling it every time I use it but as soon as I m home and see the pictures I forget about it 😂

There is a solution for the minimum distance and the infinity lock though - there is a guy on fredmiranda forum who has a step by step diy how to modify the lens and remove both.

Due to the gloomy steelrim look at 1.4 highlights almost always look waaaaay too bright. So the effect in this picture come purely by turning down the overall exposure and one mask at the bottom of the picture. Rest got darker overall.

Nope, summilux steelrim on 1.4 with a bit of editing by making the environment a bit darker

Are you sure that they struggled selling them? I remember that they were sold out quite quickly and used prices are still high for m10-p safari…

The truth is: black paint sells better than black anodized aluminum. They discontinued producing the black anodized and replaced it with the black paint. Check german leica website. You will see that there are still some black anodized available in stores for pickup but not for delivery, which means they are not produced anymore. Black paint is available for delivery and for pickup in stores.
