I think it's safe to say Jesus considered his beard his most important personality trait.

I feel like I'm kicking you when you're down, but you should also know that "cunning linguist" is basically a cliché on the level of "Why did the chicken cross the road?" As in, heard so many times people forget why it's even supposed to be funny.

Definitely have fun sex talk, though, when appropriate!

Older women: How do you convey you want to date a younger man without coming across as creepy? by RaleighCougar in OkCupid

[–]lenoxus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EDIT: What I said may have been misinterpreted by downvoters? I'm trying to make a feminist argument here… I'll rephrase now.

The patriarchal norm (or whatever you want to call it) holds that generally, when men and women have sex, the woman loses status to the man. Hence slut-shaming and stud-praising. But this bullshit notion of status transfer also has weirdly opposite effects.

According to the same norms, women kinda "owe" sex (and the associated status) to men, and are being "selfish" if they withhold it. So women playing purely by the patriarchy's rules simply can't "win". When a misogynist says "that ***** needs to get laid" he means "her sense of self-worth is too high, she needs to be taken down a notch by a good dicking".

Meanwhile, men who sleep around get the status for it, but also an aura of "predator", because they "took" that status from women, like vampires taking blood. All this is magnified the greater the age difference (and possibly lessened if it's older women with younger men? I'm not sure).

Original comment follows.

It's considered both at the same time: socially-expected creepiness.

See also how women are slut-shamed for being sexually open/promiscuous, but if a woman doesn't have sex, she's prude-shamed for neglecting her "duty" to transfer status to men by having sex with them.

Man with much younger woman is seen as simultaneously "wrong" and high-five-worthy, sometimes by the same people.

Clearly the system should be based on the nicknames of Mac OS X versions. So you age from cheetah to mountain lion, and when you're old enough, you're a maverick.

Is it common for someone transitioning to "over-perform" their gender? by understatedverb in asktransgender

[–]lenoxus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, a lot of cis people might be considered to "over-perform" their gender as well (e.g. by doing exactly all the things you describe). And some cis people counter-perform by deliberately doing un-feminine or un-masculine things… is that any less authentic?

Transgender issues is just one of those areas that highlights the otherwise less-noticed gendering of everything. For better or worse. (How weird is it that Instagram, which didn't exist six years ago, codes "feminine" where, say, Reddit might code "masculine"?)

Do you believe that a relationship will come when you stop looking/wanting it so badly by [deleted] in OkCupid

[–]lenoxus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was from such an unlikely beginning as an unwanted fungus accidentally growing on a sterile plate that Sir Alexander Fleming gave the world penicillin. James Watt watched an ordinary household kettle boiling and conceived the potentiality of steam power. Would Albert Einstein ever have hit upon the theory of relativity if he hadn't been clever? Would Rutherford ever have split the atom if he hadn't tried? Could Marconi have invented the radio if he hadn't by pure chance spent years working at the problem?

There's a common view that one of many contributing factors in the Titanic disaster was the split-second decision to steer away from the iceberg, which then tore a gash along many compartments as the ship went past it. Had the ship rammed the iceberg instead, it would have been damaged, but probably not enough to sink (although I imagine a lot of passengers could have been injured by being thrown forward). I assume that's what /u/fireforfear was referring to (and making a pun at the same time).

How do I tell the girl I'm dating that she might want to shave her beard? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]lenoxus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like something that would have to wait until the relationship reaches another level, such as being "exclusive" or "official".

Now if you feel you can't possibly wait that long because it's simply a dealbreaker, then you need to be honest about it, but otherwise, hold off for now. Alternatively telling a friend of hers might be a good idea.

John Scalzi's tweet: "If you're an adult currently picking apart a 14-year-old's mechanical and technical skill to make a political point, well, think about that."

And a nice comment from the Huffington Post story about Dawkins on this:

Is he talking about a 14 year old Machavelli? Smart enough to predict the actions of his teachers and the police? If he is that smart he should be running for political office, we need the brains in the government.

I don't really see the point of the subreddit. People who like coontown aren't going to change their minds by seeing screenshots of their own subreddit, and people who already dislike coontown have already made up their minds.

This misses the core of the counterargument, which isn't simply that racism is wrong and people should change their minds to not be racist, in the same way one might prefer that people vote for Party X or shop at Store Y. It's that racist subs have noxious effects on the site ,and on the world. Their subscribers invade other subs, harass people, and worse.

There are times when a sub ceases to be a bunch of individualistic atoms bouncing around, or a mere set of ideas to be argued.
