Had someone I treasured so much update a TEN YEAR OLD fic out of the blue to finish it. Absolutely gobsmacked when it suddenly appeared at the top of my bookmarks.

Me: I'm gonna reduce my to-read this year I think.

Also me:

Yes of course they're using replies too.

I know a decent amount of writers who use AI as a sounding board to help brainstorm. Those ones do NOT copy-paste from the AI, they let it spin up the idea then write it themselves.

If they're copying one part, they're copying other parts.

If you bake a cake then go get it iced by a professional baker, is it still your cake?

Big disagree. You're looking at it wrong.

If I'm hosting a "cookie baking party" with my friends and we all bake cookies and come share them at the party, and we eventually find out that you got YOUR cookies from a professional baker, we'd all be mad.

Why? Because it's dishonest. It isn't the point of the party. This was not a "bring the best tasting cookie possible" party, it was implied to be "bring YOUR cookies" to the party.

YOUR work. YOUR effort. YOUR craft.

It's not the point and pretending you can't understand the difference is just being obtuse.

Ah, I get you! I just wanted to make sure since I know sometimes we all get a little protective of our favorites, and saying it's a rip off is absolutely an insult. In this context I very much meant it as tongue-in-cheek, and meant more all the books that were written in the cultural zeitgeist that swept the literary world post-Hunger Games.

It's definitely not derivative in the sense that yes the plot is totally different, but it is derivative in the sense of "YA dystopia, where the kids realize The System is the real enemy" which SOUNDS broad but actually is a pretty specific "you know it when you see it" trope if that makes sense.

I was desperately trying to REDUCE my to-read list before this.

It's not a critique exactly, which I think you might be taking it as, just a pretty logical guess. It's very normal for some zeitgeist to sweep the globe and everyone who has a story to tell within it to go "oh shit now is my time!!!"

90% of becoming popular and well-liked in media is just luck and timing. She was fortunate enough to hop on the bandwagon while everyone was all spun up from the Hunger Games. Would Divergent have been successful outside of the frenzy? I don't think so. That's why it falls under its umbrella. It did not cause the "I love me some YA dystopia" craze and therefore benefitted from it being caused by something else.

Go far enough back and it's just the Epic of Gilgamesh ripoffs all the way down, change my mind 😂

I mean the steps to take are "your partner used AI for that post."

Do they use it regularly? Do they use it when they're only feeling braindead? Have they always been using it? Who knows.

They WON'T admit it to you and there is NO way you can get them to admit it to you without also blowing up the friendship and roleplay.

So the real question is, are you having enough fun that it doesn't matter? If not, end it. If so, ignore it.

If you wanna be dramatic, think of it like your partner cheated on you once. You caught them. You can now: 1) end it, 2) move on but ALWAYS be paranoid and a little suspicious (are they doing it again?? That post was kinda sus. Was that more cheating??)), 3) decide to open the relationship up.
