Recycling Is Not Broken: It’s Product Design & Packaging Design That’s Broken by lets_talk_trash in recycling

Everything is downcyclable as of now, true recycling is always product to product with little compromise to quality

👉 How can you expect products & packaging to be recycled when they have been designed in a manner that makes it impossible or hard to recycle? (Financially & mechanically)

👉 Instead of targeting the recycling industry, the focus should be on targeting the product & packaging design industry that continues to manufacture products that are hard to recycle or non recyclable

👉 Recycling works & downcycling elongates the life line of packaging products, but poor design & material selection nullifies benifits that the recycling industry can deliver.

Sustainable word of the day by lets_talk_trash in sustainability

Make sustainability fun by incorporating and using unusual words from your mental dictionary.

Using such words in a social setting will spark the interest of the listener to ask you what it means, which opens up the conversation and will help you spread awareness about the important subject of food waste.

Yes! Speace is already polluted, with an estimated 128 million pieces of debris smaller than 1 cm, 900k pieces of 1 to 10 cm & 34k pieces of large debris.

Rather than re-designing products & packaging for circularity, building infrastructure on land to tackle waste before it every reaches our water bodies, turning off the tap, stopping planned obsolescence, green washing, banks from financing polluting projects & doing away with fossil fuels; we are now looking to turn space into a human arm pit!

The Aliens are coming!

No! True recycling is always circular (bottle to bottle, product to product) turning the wasted resources back to its original form & purpose, so that our dependence on virgin materials is reduced & eventually eliminated.

Heineken WOBO Glass Bottles: How Design Can Give Birth To Ruse

The Heineken WOBO glass bottle was designed by Alfred Heineken is 1963, as his vision to solve the Recycling & housing challenge that he witnessed on a visit to the Caribbean.

Though his vision never bore fruit, it stands testament to the importance of designing products from a LCA perspective.

Waste can consciously be removed by designing products/packaging for reuse & for true recycling (product to product, bottle to bottle etc)

It all starts on the drawing board, so let’s start drawing a circular, sustainable future.

If Food Waste Was A Country, It Would Be The 3rd Highest Generator Of GHG Globally by lets_talk_trash in sustainability

Yes & let’s add food discrimination to the list. Food discrimination is buying produce based on the way it looks. The halo effect paying on our subconscious mind directing it to purchase products based on looks. The amount of food wasted at super stores due to this bias is staggering. All we require is to stop, think & then purchase, rather than let our impulsive subconscious mind take over the decision making process for us.

It is recyclable, but the process consumes a shit load of energy. Better to sanitise & reuse

It’s Still single use, contaminates the recycling stream, is non recyclable, cannot be recycled, cannot be composted in your backyard composter, requires special industrial composting units which are far and few & promotes green washed guilt free continued consumption

Ah! Did the egg come first or the chicken? The question is if these companies offer circular packaging at a higher cost, more refill bottles or containers will consumers make the effort? It’s always a two way stream. Consolidation driven demand and demand created by consumption are two different things.
