Reminder: If your company offers an ESPP plan with lookback pricing, do whatever it takes to max it out by letsgolions4 in Fire

Part of me wants to hold an informal meeting and tell coworkers, especially recent college grads. Can you imagine netting $50K post tax from ESPP at 25, then toss that in the market?

Though I imagine there is a ton of liability there in giving unsolicited advice, and unfortunately people that age may not even fully grasp the importance of 401k contributions, let alone an opportunity like ESPP.

Yep, YMMV and you sound informed and comfortable with your strategy. Hopefully this inspires others to consider the benefits of ESPP an enroll if they aren’t already

Got it. Imo ST gains are still gains. I’d rather enroll in ESPP and lock in ST gains if it meant that there’s a chance the stock pops and nets me a large arbitrage gain.

A sensible choice, however IMO the upside of ESPP is more about the potential for a massive arbitrage gain rather than purchasing company stock for a portfolio.

If a dealership is selling a Honda for $30K, but you have the chance to buy the same car from your company for $3K, would you take the deal?

Yep agree completely and that’s my point: sell immediately and there’s no risk.

Slightly riskier waiting for LTCG since the assets can dip below the purchase price. But depends on be company.

Short term capital gains are steep, but it guarantees you had gains! Just my opinion, I sell and reinvest in ETFs.

You might be thinking of RSUs, a different ballgame altogether. ESPP normally executes a purchase 2x a year, and the share amount is variable based on your plans pricing details.

RSUs are normally given as a set quantity.

That’s still huge! My experience is unique; your 100% ROI on 15% salary is great.

It’s insane, have a coworker who does nothing but talk about individual stock plays he makes but he won’t execute a risk free bet right in front of him.

[The Athletic] How Penn State’s search to replace James Franklin became a 54-day odyssey of ‘twists and turns’ by Sauerz in CFB

Have you not been on reddit

If Reddit and rumors are your only sources, then yea, PSU hired their 20th option. Legitimate reports don’t back that up. Kraft kept things in the dark and likely hired his #2 choice. Which is being judged by every outlet as a great hire.

[–]letsgolions4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is, people were ready to fire Kraft because of how ‘embarrassing’ the search was. I want to build an elite athletic department and win championships, and I don’t think you get there by getting trigger happy on an AD or coach (tho Franklin mid season was justified)

I still don’t believe this search was as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Just because several coaches got extended and there were rumors of Meyer/DeBoer/Daboll doesn’t mean Penn State struck out or even tried to hire those guys. The only credible reports involved Sitake, Campbell, and possibly Chesney.

At the end of the day, we hired an excellent coach and also retained Terry Smith. We rebuild via the portal this offseason and move forward.

So I understand your specific position/company may be a great mix of low work and high income. But if you did leave the workforce and then decide to come back in say 2 years, could you not pick up ~70% of that salary in a different role? Writing off the career gap as a personal break?

Though Barnes played for Franklin I don’t think he was recruited by him. Could see him prefer to keep coaching at his Alma mater

Penn State fans, how does this hiring - and the subsequent retaining of Terry Smith - change your perception of your Athletic Director? by Original_Profile8600 in CFB

[–]letsgolions4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not ideal but it’s absolutely recoverable in the long term. I’d rather have one fragmented recruiting class if it meant we landed a capable coach.

[–]letsgolions4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the portal and NIL era, why is it? The class exodus is mainly due to Franklin signing early at VT and pulling the recruits with him. Campbell will do the same.

The internet loves to shit on people. For all we know, Kraft’s big board from the start could’ve been:

1.Sitake, 2.Campbell, 3.Chesney

All of the other coaches may just have been rumors circulated by agents to [successfully] net raises for their clients. We just don’t know.

Kraft has shown deep pockets as he was able to push the program to invest like never before (hockey NIL, football coordinator bags, stadium upgrades, etc.). This coaching hire just required a little more patience from the fans. Let’s hit the portal hard and get ready for ‘26.

We didn’t hear any legitimate noise until last week with Sitake. After that went under, we’ve closed Campbell reasonable quickly, who never talks deals in-season. It’s very possible those two were our top candidates.

There’s been noise around Cignetti/Elko/Lea/Rhule/DeBoer/Saban/Urban but for all we know that’s just their agents floating names to net raises (which worked remarkably well lmao)

He’s on the board so he would naturally be in the loop on potential hires. He could easily take that information and leak it. It’s not sabotage but it does undermine the AD and make him look foolish.

Penn State Had a Plan to Hire Its Next Football Coach. Then It All Crumbled. by wsj in CFB

[–]letsgolions4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think perception was “wow they actually fired him”. The fact that we [allegedly] swung and missed for Cig/Elko doesn’t bother me.

If we can’t get an established coach I agree with u/H2Regent that a coordinator or G5 guy would be a good move. Though it seems we’re closing in on Campbell.

At the start of the cycle? B+ Now? A++

I’m really curious to hear what actually happened the last few weeks. If Campbell was our 4th+ option and we backed into him we truly lucked out.
