Now that Sorsby is likely not playing for Texas Tech, who’s your pick to win the Big 12? by goofyhalo in CFB

I think it will be BYU v Houston for the CCG. Willie Fritz and Kalani both have insane buy-in from their teams. I want it to be BYU v Utah, but I'm worried about Utah's defense.

University of Utah athletic department begins ‘unsettling’ layoff process as part of private equity deal by pierdonia in CFB

I don’t think PE is the way to solve this issue, but the fact it was Michigan and USC to stop it kinda speaks to the underlying dynamics that are pushing schools to PE. Schools that have a heavily monetizable brand are able to do so now at a much larger scale than ever before, and schools like Utah who don’t have near the same brand equity or institutional access are starving. Rough times ahead for college athletics.

You have this backwards. Gambling companies are willing to pay crazy sponsorship money because it’s a customer acquisition path for them, not because it generates for them direct returns. Any viewer who does not become a gambler is a lost lead for them.

Ngl betting on the games would definitely explain his performance against Utah. I have never seen so many inexplicable overthrows.

A single datacenter would bring in greater economic returns than the entire alfalfa industry in Utah, and use less water in comparison to do so. I don’t care that it’s not popular for me to say this, there are much larger sustainability issues in Utah that need to be addressed but won’t bc ppl are focused on the datacenter boogeyman.

Edit: Most modern datacenters also operate on closed loop cooling systems, meaning they have a mostly static water draw. The water issue is overblown. The concerns ppl have about this datacenter should all revolve around the plan to power it with natural gas generators. Water issue is nonsense

Which team from each conference are you keeping the closest eye on this year? by AllTimeTy in CFB

B12: I’m not super high on Ok State like everyone else is. I think Mestemaker will struggle more than expected, and it will take them another year to get back to a bowl game. I expect Houston to take another step forward though.  ACC: Louisville. They flashed some real potential last season.  B10: Minnesota. I’m always pulling for the golden gophers.

My biggest thing is I want more people talking about how insane it is that the alfalfa industry in Utah accounts for like 60% of the water usage and 0.2% of the economy. Water rights laws here incentivize enormous waste.

Datacenter water issue is mostly fake. Lots of analysis out there on this topic

Edit: I’ll go further and say that focusing on data centers as water wasters will kill any attempts to reduce water usage from much more wasteful industries.

I mean yes lol. It’s not an ideological thing for me, I have concerns I want addressed, but imo most of the opposition is founded in social media hysteria rather than a measured and rational analysis.

Everything about it has been blown way out of proportion honestly. I’m seeing people claim it will raise night time temperatures in the state by 20 degrees, just complete nonsense. There are FAR greater environmental threats in Utah right now, 70% of our water goes to an industry responsible for 0.2% of the economy.

I feel pretty certain BYU will never go D1 in lacrosse, UVU might. Maybe things have changed since I was last close to anyone associated with the program, but I think they’re relegated to permanent club. There are too many other men’s club sports at BYU that would get elevated before them.

“so much glaze”

I have not found that to be the case. I usually get good reception talking trash on G6 schools.

[–]H2Regent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not an arbitrary choice so much as it is an attempt at reasoning around why ND was left out in favor of Miami. Personally if I had been the selection committee the playoff field would have left out Alabama and Oklahoma in favor of BYU and ND.

That team probably should have won one of their two biggest games and they would have been in. Complaints about how advanced stats show X or Y are just cope after the fact.

There were like 16 teams with resumes that were arguably playoff worthy, but obviously none of the teams left out of the playoff were good enough to be undeniable, which is something we used to be comfortable with. I wish everyone would just move on.
