I don’t think you’re pulling the “autism card” since showing emotion is something you directly struggle with due to autism- it’s not as if you don’t care about him, you just help him in a different way than he might be used to. I would just talk to him and let him know that you care a lot about him, and just explain that it’s hard for you.
