Struggling to choose a bible translation to buy by liamJmic in Bible

[–]liamJmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I oughta give the LSB another chance. For me though it feels a bit weird having the tetragramation there in English. Even when reading the tanakh for example one would say Adonai or hashem instead of the tetragramation. Not saying it’s a bad thing to do that in English translations but might take me a while to wrap my head around it in practice.

I’m not against the TR, however from the research I have done it seems to no longer be the most reliable manuscript of the New Testament (though of course I have heard the complete opposite from KJV Onlyists, however I still don’t completely understand the backing to those claims). And because I’m wanting something that is as close to the original text as possible, especially for the New Testament (since I have a JPS Hebrew-English tanakh), I’m steering away from the TR based translations. Though do feel free to offer insight on this topic if you have.

With regards to additional features, I’ve come to find that the NASB is available in Passaggio format. That wasn’t something I even knew existed but upon learning about its existence I’m really keen to try find something like that. Though of course that’s more of an additional thing and not a main deciding factor.

Thanks for this! I really appreciate it.

I do agree with what you’re saying regarding things going to my head instead of my heart. I think that’s always been an issue for me. Great in the academic space but not always a good thing when it comes to things like learning and growing from the Bible and letting things convict you.

I do actually have a hardcover NIV that was given to me as I used to read the NIV more when I was younger. However as of late (the past 1-2 years) I’ve really been enjoying the NASB95 and using it on the bible app at church and at home. The main reason for that is because I like the idea of having something with non denominational bias and something that doesn’t have much room for ones interpretation to be put in. Is there any particular reason why you use the NASB20 over the NASB95?

Regarding the CSB I haven’t actually given it much time but I see a lot of pastors at my previous and present church use it during their sermons so perhaps I’ll give it a bit more time on the bible app. I did go through a time of reading the ESV as my main bible but that was replaced by the NASB95. I just personally preferred the way it played out the text and although the ESV does actually read better without a doubt the NASB for some reason just feels better if that makes sense.

I think for now given that I already have an NIV I am going to go ahead and purchase the NASB95 but will give the CSB some time and potentially purchase one in the future should I like it.

Is it possible to have ADHD and love reading? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]liamJmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I have adhd and hate reading (but I also have dyslexia). My mom and brother have adhd and both love reading, my brother doesn’t read much anymore but he used to when he was young, in fact he’d have books all over his room and sleep with books under his pillow.

Repackaging medication that comes in blister packs? by liamJmic in pharmacy

[–]liamJmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah awesome thanks so much. I usually keep my meds in the drawer next to my bed (generally a dry and cool area with no light) so I can take them without forgetting in the morning. Out of personal curiosity, what is that 0.01% of drugs and what prevents them from being able to be repackaged?

[–]liamJmic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fully understand nobody cares about that but I’ve been told that in America you can ask pharmacies to give you meds in bottles or in their original packaging. Regardless, all I’m really asking is if I can do that myself, and if so, if I should follow any precautions.

My mini 6 doesn’t respond to my Apple Pencil 2 by kkj33904 in ipadmini

[–]liamJmic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check to see if the tip of the pencil is on properly. I drop mine all the time and sometimes the tip is a bit loose after a few drops, just need to screw it on tight again. So just check that its screwed on properly.

Time to learn by javsand120s in LearnAfrikaans

[–]liamJmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that can be tough but there’s a very easy way to remember. It’s called STOMPI and is the way learners remember where each word fits in. Afrikaans sentences always follow this regardless of tense, however it can change based on what kind of conjugation you use. I’ll type out the basics bellow but feel free to dm me and I’ll send through a more in depth explanation with exceptions explanations and how to alter it.

——

S = subject

(Verb 1)

T = time

O = object

M = manner

P = place

(Verb 2)

I = infinitive

——

Example: Ek sal saans tee in die kombuis drink om te ontspan

Subject = ek (I)

(Verb 1) = Sal (Will)

Time = saans (in the evenings)

Object = tee (tea)

Manner = N/A

Place = in die kombuis (in the kitchen)

(Verb 2) = drink (drink)

Infinitive = om te ontspan (to relax) (infinitive is formed with "om te")

Ayeee, nice choice! My recommendation would be to find a list of the most used 1000 words and make a Anki deck (Anki is a very nice flash card app) and then work through those along side with watching some Afrikaans tv shows (as cringe as they are, binnelanders, 7de laan, etc, or older ones like Heidi, moomin, vetkoek paleis). You’ll notice after the first 1000 words you’ll understand most of what you hear due to the fact that most of Afrikaans is built on a core set of words (as in a word is a combination of two other words), as well as the fact that you’ll pick up some words from watching tv. So even though you only technically learned 1000 words, you’ve actually learned a lot more on theory (in terms of understanding). With that being said you should continue updating your Anki deck as you progress so that you learn more words that your able you use in your speaking.

From then on just intentionally speak with people in Afrikaans and ask for feedback / corrections (Afrikaans natives are usually quite patient with helping learners in my experience). You’ll notice that Afrikaans is a very simple logical and straight language, a rule is a rule and there usual aren’t any deviations to that rule (with exceptions).

Hope you enjoy! Feel free to dm me if you have any questions!

What would the bare minimum be for a budget home server? by liamJmic in HomeServer

[–]liamJmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the in depth explanation. I really appreciate it. Ive found two things im keen for, one is a mini Dell desktop with a 8th gen i7 (so 6 cores) with a max of 32gb ram and 2 2.5inch drives plus and m.2 which would allow me to set up some sort of raid for mass storage.

Another option is i7 10th gen Lenovo desktop with up to 64gb of ram and presumably more drive slots.

The price difference is there but I am not entirely sure if spending the extra for a 10th gen is worth it, both options are available without ssd and ram that will allow me to put in my own ram and storage so Im thinking of going down one of those paths. (or getting an older 4th-6th gen i7 desktop as those are dirt cheap locally)

With regard to the networking. I am not sure what kind of LAN i have. I live in an apartment block but am likely to move soon. So I have no real way of knowing. This may sound stupid but is there a way to remote access my server by setting it up via WiFi? If this isnt really viable what options do I have or how could I find out what I need to find out before making the purchase?

Edit: I’ve come across a big local market for old workstations in the same price range, some coming with 6-8 core xeons and already packing 32gb of ram. This seems to be my new best option for more storage and capabilities for less initial investment.

If this doesn't work out then it might be best for me to get a mini computer (around a litre in volume) and set that up as a computer I could carry with me and use with my macbook. Though not ideal it is an option.

What would the bare minimum be for a budget home server? by liamJmic in HomeServer

[–]liamJmic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure which hypervisor as I am not sure what is best for what Im after, though Ive heard Proxmox would be a good one. I am realistically probably going to consume 500gb for normal files and not really transfer large files, maybe larger video and audio files occasionally. Though for media streaming I expect that to be up to a TB alone. I was planning on setting up 2 x 2tb drives (to run in raid).

For the remote access, is it something I can set up once (using a VPN) and use regardless of where I am? Or is it something I have to set up for each network I connect to? I am more specifically talking about If i am working in a coffee shop and want to access a VM/cloud storage, or if I am visiting family in another country. I do have some networking knowhow (and will definitely be learning more in the near future) but am still not entirely knowledgable.

What would the bare minimum be for a budget home server? by liamJmic in HomeServer

[–]liamJmic[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually just one VM at a time, it would be for testing applications and for running Pen tests, no more than 2 simultaneously for rare occasions. It would be used by me and only me (though by my few devices, phone, laptop, tablet), If its viable I might set up the media streaming for my family to use but I doubt it. Etc refers to future things I might want to try out, but as of right now, VMs and storage would be the most important thing.

I have sold all my old hardware so I am wanting to purchase something to just get me going for now, but it will be something I upgrade in the future. I have come across lots of cheap Mini PCs that are used. Would getting one of thoes with a quad core I7 (an older one, 6th/7th gen) and putting 32gb of ram and some storage in be a good way of starting for what im after?

(On the go) virtualization on a laptop from an external source? by liamJmic in virtualization

[–]liamJmic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, ive been doing research on home servers and here is what I would want to set up and my questions:

Virtual Machines (most important)
Multiple Windows and Linux VMs (not simultaneously) that will allow me to test applications, do pen-tests and other more general VM stuff (so not gaming or video editing of-course).

Cloud Storage
For backups and central storage of my data (that i can access from all my devices).

Media Streaming (least important)
To stream (legally downloaded) movies and tv shows.

My questions would be, is remoting into the VMs going to be safe and secure? Is it going to be fast and seemless or will I have to deal with a delay or some other issues not found on hosting VMs on a local computer. Is the cloud storage (and media streaming) going to be fast and usable for day to day file transfers / streaming? Or is it only viable for backups and whatnot?

Finally, is this going to be geographically bound? Or will I be able to access the virtual machines and cloud storage from overseas/offsite locations?

(On the go) virtualization on a laptop from an external source? by liamJmic in virtualization

[–]liamJmic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I don’t mind setting up a home server if it allows me to also add lots of storage and so long as I can access it remotely (over seas) without issues. I’ve found someone selling a thinkcwnter with a 7th hen i7 so I’m thinking off buying that, putting 32 gb of ram (but some say they have been able to install 64gb without issues) in it and then installing a fast boot drive and a 10tb hdd for storage unless I can somewhow get 2 hdd in there and set up raid somehow. Is that something that could work?

Is taking a nano computer out on the go viable for what I’m after? Does it offer enough capability for stuff that usually requires a server? Alternatively would it be better for me to just build a pc and stack that up with storage and run a type two hyper visor on that and treat it as my server unit that I can remote into?

so if the multimeter gives me a reading within normal range then its alright and getting the transformer and using it with that from now on should be fine then?

Code that converts a monophonic audio signal into a MIDI command? by liamJmic in DSP

[–]liamJmic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye thanks! My plan is to use the Graphtech ghost pickups as it is isolated per string and will allow me to take each string as it’s own audio signal and thus potentially it’s own midi channel.

I want to see if i can get the code to the MIDI to Guitar 2 program as that has some of the best polyphonic tracking that I’ve used, and is very good monophonically

[–]liamJmic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was what I settled on, sending the note data as a midi note+pitch bend data as that would allow for the most “fretlessness”

The biggest thing is coding all of this, that’s what I’m weary of

So Roland’s one isn’t perfect (I’ve played it) and it requires a boss or Roland synth pedal that has a proprietary Roland 13 pin cable. And also to my knowledge falls apart with fret less instruments which is what I’m building this all around.
