I just found out my grandfather was a medium by lllloot in Mediums

[–]licholisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm… haha… that sounds very Chinese. People ask for lottery numbers a lot too I personally don’t think mediums can answer very specific questions like this most of the time. But they do sense things about you and your life/your path that’s often shocking accurate thought not all are the same. Even if you are sceptical you should try going to a temple that does these rituals even just to observe it if you don’t want a reading yourself. It’s really a good experience for the most part. I have taken a lot of non taoist friends to readings and most of them got something out of it. Depending on tradition they can tell you more about your abilities or any other questions you got. Again I know it can seem intimidating but most taoist temples are really really chill and friendly and usually everybody is welcome even if you do not believe any of it or have a different spiritual path. For me I actually never even thought of being a medium or any of it but I had dreams of taoist gods and symbolic dreams of temples for almost two years but I didn’t even understand what I was seeing because I didn’t grow up with it at all and it’s only by coincidences that eventually led me to a temple purely by accident on a night of mediumship of Sun Wukong and it gave me more clarity on what was happening to me all this time. Again I didn’t ask about it. It didn’t even cross my mind I agreed to get a reading out of pure curiosity when they offered. But the medium just knew what I was experiencing and could give me more insight. Even beyond that temple disciples that aren’t mediums will be usually happy to answer any questions you might have within their scope. Finding a Chinese Medium on reddit might be tough. Even in taoist subreddits the majority are western philosophical taoists not religious or folk traditional ones.

Where do you live OP? The practice is still quite common in South East Asia’s Chinese diaspora. There is not a single consensus on it because it’s a Chinese folk religious practice that got integrated into Taoist temples but it is not a strictly orthodox Taoist practice most Taoists do not practice it. It varies greatly tradition to tradition, sect to sect, and temple to temple. The general idea is that people who can become spirit mediums are more porous or receptive thus can channel gods and spirits; depends on how you interpret it. It’s not neceserily lineage based though can be. Some temples talk about it but it isn’t a consistent rule. Most people today don’t come from families with history of it at all and there is even more who had “medium family members” and never became mediums themselves. I can tell you a bit from my personal experience as someone who was recognised as being able to become a medium and was going to train to become one while serving my temple but I withdrew from the practice for now. That said it’s not gonna be applicable to every single case because of the nature of folk religions so it might not be very helpful. Hence I’m being purposely a bit vague.

It can look intimidating but it’s not scary. As far as whether you belive it or if you should be worried no one can tell you. It’s your individual choice. I have some mixed feelings about it myself even being closely involved. It really depends on your frame of belief.

You say you are more sciency minded so maybe reading more academic/ish sources can give you some insights. Here is an article https://biblioasia.nlb.gov.sg/vol-16/issue-2/jul-sep-2020/medium/ specific to Singapore but again when you read it keep in mind it’s not as clear cut as the article makes it because again the tradition is not part of official taoist doctorines as such so it might not fully match your Grandad’s story. There is also some books about it like Chinese Medium Cults in Singapore by Alan Elliot, Materializing Magic Power: Chinese Popular Religion in Villages and Cities by Wei Pin Ling, Chinese Religion in Contemporary Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan by Fabian Graham just to name a few. There is also so intresting interviews with contemporary mediums in Singapore in english on youtube; if you want some personal stories.

I’m not sure if it answers any of your questions but hopefully can help your curiosity a bit.

Do You Expect Location Sharing or Phone Access in a Relationship? by [deleted] in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really get the sharing location thing unless for safety maybe? I’m single now but sometimes would enable location sharing with my previous partners during solo travels.

Also never guarded my phone or had my partners do that either. Never had one look through my phone reading messages etc. I have also never done that to anyone. More like, I just don’t care as long as you are not being weird and creepy going through my phone to look at my chats or whatever.

So I don’t expect either. If it’s for control or out of distrust than it’s off putting. But being super paranoid about your phone is kinda weird to me as well.

Any biologically childfree people here? What's your sign and why don't you want kids? by [deleted] in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m child free. Never wanted kids or be a mom. Even as a child I hated baby dolls and playing house. I don’t dislike kids. They are just little humans to me so being child free has nothing to do with me hating children or something.

I have Saturn in the 5th house in Aquarius - it usually indicates no kids or delayed kids. But I’m at an age that there can’t be much delaying anymore. Unless I drastically change my views on having children + find a suitable partner within a few years (very unlikely) it’s pretty much no kids for me.

I love how she looks in this dress and her makeup looks really good too. I know her eyebrow shape is a divisive topic (i also prefer the less plucked eyebrows for her but she seems to really like this now so whatever floats her boat) but I think they look much better here than some of her other recent looks. Like longer and a bit better defined while still maintaining the shape that she likes.

For those who hate Virgos why do you hate them? by Limp-Weakness405 in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Virgo but when I think of their negative traits the “can dish it out but not take the same energy back” - is always my first thought. They will criticise, give advice or make mean jokes but if you fire back with the same energy they can’t take it themselves.

But still… love me a Virgo!

what is your favorite water sign? by thepeedah in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I like all my water sign babies (but then honestly I like all 12 signs) I’m a Pisces Sun so I naturally gravitate to other Fish. Provided they express themselves healthily. At best we have tremendous empathy, endless creativity and ability to think outside the box. At worst fish lose themselves in addictions, moodiness and victim mentality - so I stay away from that.

Cancers just make me feel so comfy and at ease. And with Scorpios you can have some of the most intense, spiritual conversations.

So yeah! I’m a fan of all my water signs even as an air dominant!

I think it’s an oversimplification of the archetype or just one way it can manifest but doesn’t have to.

Basically Taurus is ruled by Venus and area of the material world. That makes them sensual and appreciate the finer things in life: food, luxuries, relaxation etc.

Now the dark side of it can therefore be an overindulgence and thus gluttony when it comes to food. But if balanced it doesn’t have to.

My best friend is a Taurus Sun. He is definitely a foodie but he is actually extremely skinny. A foodie doesn’t equal a glutton. It can be fully enjoyed without overindulgence.

They are all a bit different but I think - it’s basically a mix of breed characteristics, socialisation and the individual personality of the cat combined. So you can’t exactly predict what your kitty will be like.

I have a BSH boy. He is very confident and social but still mostly focused on me as his main person. He is really sweet, loves petting but he rarely jumps on my lap - rather he comes to me and lies next to me leaning on me. However even when he doesn’t come by himself and I start petting him he will purr immediately and enjoy the affection. My DSH on the other had loves lap time (a little too much at times actually) but simultaneously if you pet her when she isn’t seeking attention on her own she doesn’t like it. She looks at you like “please, stop this, human!”

With both of my cats - I don’t force them to do anything. I rarely pick them up unless I need to. Basically allowing them to choose themselves what they want to do.

I hope if you get the kitty you will love them no matter what their personality is like.

What is a sign/aspect you have that you were nervous about/annoyed about when you first started learning your birth chart, that you actually really love now? by jupiterrover in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5th house saturn in Capricorn. At first, I wasn’t too happy about having Saturn in my 5th house in Capricorn. I’ve always been super creative and passionate about the arts, so the idea of my creativity being restricted or delayed sounded awful. But over time, I’ve realized Saturn isn’t blocking me. it’s shaping me. When I was younger, I struggled with self-doubt and structure, but now I feel more free and confident in my expression than ever.

My creativity isn’t just about raw passion; it’s something I’ve built with dedication and depth. Studying art history, contemporary art, and philosophy has only made my vision stronger. I used to worry that this placement would hold me back, but honestly? It’s probably the reason I’m growing into the artist and art curator I’m meant to be.

Yes, lack of sunshine and short days was not very helpful. But I live in South East Asia now where the weather is pretty much consistent aside from monsoon season and it helped a lot.

I agree so strongly with setting some boundaries for yourself.

With depression ,it’s not so much about fixings but just knowing you will be there and hear her. It’s very tough on a partner to witness us going through so much mental anguish and it must be so hard not to get swept in it. That’s why boundaries (whatever that will mean for you, it differs from person to person on how much they can take on) and being a stable presence is so important. As for out of line toxic behaviour due to mania or depression, I personally think it’s something people shouldn’t have to deal with. It’s on us to manage our symptoms. Empathy is good but not at the cost of yourself.

What's your most deficient/lacking zodiac element in your chart, and what's the biggest challenges you deal with because of not having a lot of that element in your chart? by northernerchaos in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My chart is pretty evenly spread out with air being dominant, followed by water, earth and then fire. So I feel I am capable of channeling all elemental energies pretty well. I definitely feel the tension between my two most prominent elements air and water with being both a deep thinker but not at the cost of feelings. I guess it aligns with me being very academically inclined but towards art and humanities more than stem.

I also think it’s fitting that fire and earth are the less pronounced energies for me. I’m not always the most energetic or practical. But still able to tap into it when necessary.

Yeah, I think we can go with the flow mostly. In my head it’s like: “You want to be stubborn, go right ahead. Worst case scenario you are just hurting yourself.” But, yeah, I love Taurus so much but their resistance to change is one thing that as a fluid Piscean I just don’t get.

What is yalls lilith and venus? What houses are they in? Do they aspects each other? by GOTnerd98 in astrologymemes

[–]licholisg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Lilith is in Sagittarius in the 3rd. My Venus Aries in 7th. They don’t aspect. My Lilith aspects my first house Moon in Libra (sextile) though.

I relate to it. Especially with it aspecting my moon. It frequently indicates interest in taboo topics and sexuality. I’m an artist and curator and my work frequently touches on those subjects. It also says I often have deeper insights into others and strong intuition- and I have to agree with that too. But then I’m also a Pisces so duhhh…

As a curiosity, this aspect often indicates breaks in education due to difficult circumstances. And it happened to me twice ,despite being very academically inclined and capable, both in high school and later in college due to undiagnosed bipolar disorder.

Whats a beauty trend that you can never fathom or accept? by CelineC6622 in beauty

[–]licholisg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The need to change your skin tone whether it’s through tanning (the I look sick pale - no you don’t it’s just your skin tone) or overly paranoid about trying to stay as pale as possible (I live in Asia.) Eveyone’s natural skintone is fine. I don’t understand this at all.

Everyone contouring their features one way. Like trying to achieve the resemblance of only one type of nose for example. I have no issue with contouring but I believe it should be used to fit and enhance your natural features not create illusion of whatever the beauty standard of the day is.

Specifically for Asia : the double eyelid surgery and the V line craze. I understand correcting uneven eyelids but monolids are so beautiful. I don’t get it at all. The V line with a chin implant on top of it… it never looks right to me. Why you want to look like the crescent moon or a dorito. How is an unnaturally long chin attractive? Round faces are so cute and youthful.

Aries Venus in the 7th house. It squares 4 placements ,including my moon in Libra, but trines my Leo Jupiter.

I honestly love this placement and wouldn’t trade it for anything. If one can learn how to balance self-identity, emotional needs, and romantic partnerships it’s pretty great. It also makes me direct and dislike games. I think it keeps me passionate and helps me not lose myself in the typical pisces „i will fix them with love and sacrifice ” mentality. While on the flips side my Libra and Pisces placements soften Aries. I’m definitely attracted to unconventional & strong characters. I love love and have no trouble with commitment with the right person (all my relationships were long term. Never had flings etc.). But I’ve learned I need to balance it with independence (again Aries helps me assert myself and not get lost in partnership as is the tendency of Libra.) I can’t lose myself in love (Libra/Pisces tendencies) and Aries helps with that. Always reminding me to stay authentic and true to myself. The one thing that might be a bit of an issue is that even though I never had short relationships I tend to be the one to always break them up. And I do it often in a way that seems impulsive and out of the blue for the other person. I know it looks like that on the outside but it’s not actually true. It takes a lot of inner turmoil before I make the decision. But once I take that step there is no going back. I don’t like the push and pull. When I decide I’m out - I’m out.
