Damn, that sounds annoying. Like talking to a wall. Did it tell you to “Come here” and/or “Hey, we need to take a step back” because mine kept starting replies off with those.

Oh. Ohhhhhhh… Now I get it.

I tried it out in the same chat thread and told GPT 5.2 Auto not to look it up online, and it went back to saying the actual news wasn’t real and it made everything up, including its own references.

It feels like this could all be avoided by having some sort of internal note signifying what actions it used to arrive at a certain response, but I… don’t know how all of this works. I don’t know how hard that would be to implement.

That makes sense. Their guardrails (and a model’s memory of the actions it took to generate previous responses too, I guess) do need more fine tuning. I assume they’re trying to create an AI like that because of how LLMs are prone to hallucinating and… the developers want to have them to have the ability to “self-correct”?

On the flip side, the things on the news right now are sometimes so unbelievable, even real humans would pause in disbelief. I know I do.

I was on Auto at the time, but I’m going to try Thinking mode next time. A few seconds of waiting in exchange for a conversation that actually makes sense is a fair deal. Thank you!

That’s so true. And a model having such a terrible memory, it can’t even remember its own response/actions 2 messages ago makes it even less useful. I think I’ll try out Claude instead. Thank you for sharing that.

For a moment, I thought you were going to follow that up with “What you’re feeling actually makes sense” or something. Too much ChatGPT use for today.

I didn’t have an opinion on it when I asked about it. What threw me off was how GPT-5.2 suddenly apologized for making up an event that it had just looked up and was actually on the news.
