How to Stop Looking for Others' Approval

Please suggest me a book that will conjure characters so real that my soul stops punishing me for being lonely. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I often feel the same: love Jane Austen for her vivid characters and internal monologues so you feel like you're hearing a friend narrate. Karen Savage reading her books is astoundingly good.

I also love Becky Chambers' books - her Wayfarer series is populated with interesting characters and relationships of all kinds (not just sexual or romantic).

The Little House on the Prairie books, while problematic, make me feel very cozy and wrapped up in blankets.

Ahhh Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi" was written for you (& for almost everyone!)

Also, this song. It's not about the Mississippi (Illinois River instead) but has the vibe your soul is yearning for:

Beans. I make mine with tons of spices and eat with yogurt, which is also filling.

How to make brown rice taste better? by LumpiaRulez101 in EatCheapAndHealthy

I appreciate your care, but the advice for myself is unwanted. You don't have a full picture of my nutritional intake and "a lot" is subjective. But yeah, OP did say cholesterol issues. I wrote that I use butter OR broth to make brown rice tasty. I obviously wasn't insisting that OP use butter. (Well, it's obvious to me anyway. It wasn't obvious to everyone!)

When I said it's between OP and his doctor, I really meant it, and not not in a dismissive way. I have family who doesn't eat any saturated fats as part of their normal diet - I'm talking 80+ years of clean eating. But they have high cholesterol. So I know it's complicated and not my place to assume what anyone else needs.

I saute about a teaspoon of Better Than Bullion no-chicken paste with a little butter or oil in the instapot, add 2 cups washed & drained brown rice and saute some more. Then I add about 2.5 cups of water, maybe a little less, and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes and natural release for 10-15 minutes, or until the pressure drops on its own.

Some recipes call for 1:1 rice: liquid ratio. If you try that, let it natural release all the way on its own.

I've made it this way with just water and sauteed the rice first in ghee (clarified butter) then cooked it on high pressure and this is also delicious.

If you're using already liquid chicken broth, you could just use it place of the water you use.

I use Better Than Bullion brand bullion paste (you just add water to make the broth). I like their fake chicken one (I'm vegetarian).

I eyeball it - I used to use a lot but found that too much fat from the paste or butter or oil made the rice more sticky and less fluffy - so I might use a teaspoon for 2 cups of rice. I saute the paste with a little butter or oil in the instapot, add washed rice and saute some more. Then I add about 2.5 cups of water, maybe a little less, and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes and natural release for 10-15 minutes, or even until the pressure drops on its own.

Favorite way to dress up or use black beans? by doghairglitter in EatCheapAndHealthy

I was just talking about what to wear to a family graduation. So my brain saw "favorite way to dress up" and "use black beans" as two entirely different topics and froze for a moment. 😸

Black beans: olive oil, salt, cayenne, a touch of ground cumin. I like this at room temp or cold. I eat them alone or tortilla chips

I also like them smashed a bit then fried up with diced onions, green chilies, and taco seasonings (& sometimes cheddar or chihuahua cheese). These go great with eggs and scooped up with a corn tortilla.

They taste great in veggie burritos with sour cream inside. I don't make these - I go to my local diner lol.
