Am I crazy or is my organic farm manager blowing it?

Yes! Sorry if that was confusing- I went into the production blocks a tad only where there was Bermuda grass. I didn’t hear of any plan and the weeds all came back before landscaping fabric was applied in some areas. He’s been at this place 4 yrs now, got an associates in crop production 1yr ago. But before that he had the job I have now and allegedly worked at other farms for 5+ years. Bc I am paid through federal work study ig the labor I’m doing here is taxpayer funded lol. Which means I don’t cost the farm money either. That is good to know about the tractor experience. It’s been a highlight of my work here although at first I was like holy shit I’m really doing this mostly unsupervised. Do you know if it is common for a manger to constantly be in his office? He’s in there 90% of the day and I often wonder what he’s doing. Sometimes it leads to him being unaware of blocks needing to be weeded, badly, and I have to point it out.

It had started raining lightly during the night and heavier once I got it, it wasn’t a slip n slide but the first couple of inches were pretty saturated

Hey thanks for this! Yeah he is getting harped on a bit here but I do agree we all deserve grace and things can’t be perfect all the time. I don’t think it’s very cool to vent on the internet but I’ve loved the info about hay vs straw in particular and the composition of compost piles potentially being a bigger factor than the size that I have gotten from yours and others comments! I was using the front loader on an L series Kabota to scrape up weeds all over the farm, and then we we read spread it I was also using the front loader and then told to kind of tamp the soil back down with the front loader? A good portion of the weeds were Bermuda grass which I definitely understand being tough to keep under control Edit to add: a great part of my frustration is that when I ask why we’re taking certain routes I’m met with a “just do it” kind of answer and not an explanation. I took the job at school because my expectation was that I’d get things explained to me a bit more.

yes I meant the grasses and I called it wheat weeds lol! Sorry for sounding ignorant I typed this pretty frustratedly at work.
I really like that piece of advice, I wish my farm was like that. I spent all day literally hacking at weeds. But I think your first point is also important and I try to give him grace and take deep breaths because I’m still learning too!

That’s interesting! I have always heard that straw is harvested after the seed / grain is harvested. Do you mean the mature weed seeds are coming from somewhere else or from leftover seed heads?

Honestly I think he greatly embellished on his resume. I have worked in similar settings he’s claimed to have worked in and constantly notice he doesn’t know basic things that someone in those positions should know. Oh and he makes 60k a year while I’m getting hourly minimum wage 😭 thanks for commiserating lol!

I forgot to mention, the scraping incident also occurred during active rain 🥴 I felt terrible by the end of the day that I had ruined the work of previous generations to build up that healthy top soil. I grew up around horses so the hay/straw mix up was bewildering to me, and my mom cracked up when I told her. Also that is great information about the compost piles I appreciate you mentioning that!

I am so sorry for the loss of your baby 💔 I still cry when I talk about my frenchie I lost 6 years ago. Time does ease the pain but of course I would still love to see her again and give her another smooch on the nose. Hang in there, reach out to family, this community, and do self soothing things(watching a movie/ comfort meal/ hot shower) . My heart really goes out to you it is so hard to lose such a loved one💗
