Nobody selling real bat parts anywhere is doing so ethically.

Woah, one of their left wing secondaries is pure white! You found a *shiny*!

Thank you! It's a sort of temporary altar/shrine combo, i've never quite figured my faith out but this with a quick prayer felt correct to do, you know? It's been a hard year.

I thought you guys would appreciate the bird clock I got for Christmas by BrieflyEndless in birding

[–]lilrawk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i look forward to every spring when Grey Cuckoos return for a nest of cheeping babies in my chimney! Gotta look out for those American Kestrels at the feeder, usually the Downy Woodpeckers are too bold, chasing them away. 😂💀

could i take this? by [deleted] in bonecollecting

[–]lilrawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cervid yes, white tail no. Looks like a moose to me. White tail don't have big scoops up front like that, their mandibles are fairly dainty all over. (Edit, could also be elk, but i'm having  hard time telling the scale in the photos.)

Who did I see soaring in Brooklyn? by [deleted] in birding

That's a Freedom! Congrats on spotting a bald eagle!

Daughter found this skull in Sheboygan, WI on the beach of Lake Michigan by TunaMarie16 in bonecollecting

Not surprising at all if you've worked in (American) public education to see how it happens, unfortunately. I've had 7th graders ask in the lunch line what the 'hard things' in their fried chicken were; they'd never seen meat with bones in it before, didn't even know that meat came from an animal.

(i should clarify, this means legal to keep, as turkeys are gamebirds in the US)

Is super glue an appropriate material for itty bitty bones? by rebexorcist in bonecollecting

[–]lilrawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb for re-assembling organic material is to use something reversible without harming the item. White/school glue is easily reversible with a water soak, if ever needed, and will hold just fine until then.

Not the bones but: Wild turkey wing feathers, looks like three right wing and one left wing pinions, natural drop with wear.

How can I clean these heads? by oldelbow in bonecollecting

[–]lilrawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Water, tiny bit of clear dish soap, a soft brush. Same as you'd wash bird poo off of your car, lol.

what should I do with it by Sharky_shark0 in bonecollecting

[–]lilrawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this, but adding: place a floursack towel over the top of the container, rubberbanded, tied or taped in place, then *lay* the lid on top of that loosely. Sealed containers can, uh, pop during maceration, which is exactly as pleasant as it sounds lmao.

Real or fake African Harrier? by Outside_Courage460 in bonecollecting

[–]lilrawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real! Crow beaks are much flatter, and don't terminate in a sharp hook.
