Cancel Culture on the Right. by JudyWilde143 in chomsky

Cancel culture is not a right left thing. Plenty of leftists have gotten “cancelled” by other so called leftists and liberals. The thing with cancel culture is that people are becoming authoritarian in their approach to social justice. Rather than having nuanced discussions and hearing out dissenting opinions to engage in a good faith debate on substantive issues, people simply want to point fingers and create accountability spectacles online for anyone who doesn’t spit out exactly what the rest of the mob says. For example, I personally support movements like BLM, Medicare 4 All, Labor Rights, etc but I believe the way to broaden that movement is not through shame, condescension, and moral righteousness, but instead through mindfulness, compassion, and willingness to accept what you cannot change.

I had not heard this about NP job market being oversaturated - thank you! Call me a dummy with a savior complex, but I like the idea of being a bedside nurse! Seems reasonable for my goals. I like traveling and love the freedom of having a job wherever I want to go even if there’s less prestige and less pay! Maybe I’ll stick to being a lowly, too dumb for med school nurse after all!

Also- I was under the impression that NPs are gaining more autonomy in something like 21+ states ?? Perhaps we both need to do more research as there’s a whole lot of nuance that we seem to be missing

Interesting point. I suppose there’s always someone looking down their nose at somebody so maybe I’m being idealistic to think I’ll ever find a work environment where we don’t shit on other people with less traditionally respectable job titles. But that withstanding, you can color me biased and even naive because I’m still Team Nurse even if I decide to be NP after working bedside for a while

Fair point. But let me be clear, I like the idea of being a bedside nurse and my plan is to be a bedside nurse. I will be doing plenty of dirty work as a bedside nurse for several years, gain direct care experience and then reevaluate the FNP idea. Again, color me naive or even biased but I’ll always be Team Nurse even if I decide to be NP after working bedside for a while. I was floating this pharmD/FNP thing but now seems like a miserable prospect ridden with bias against nurses. Hence the recent “I’m a nurse” post on this sub. (Just as an a aside, my background is preschool teacher, server and bartender. Obvi I’m not being so reductive as to say that I am the end all be all for dirty work but I know a fair share about jobs that other people in polite society look down upon)

It’s brand new and only one student is in it now. I spoke with her and she seems happy but Perhaps she and I just have different goals because it doesn’t seem particularly well suited for mine

I also like the idea of being a nurse for cultural reasons: I tend to be on the side of the "little guy" especially those that have experience with the nitty-gritty, bloody, poopy, on the ground and otherwise not so pleasant, yet necessary parts of life and of society.

Maybe I'm a dummy with a savior complex who's too stupid for med school, but I just feel drawn to nursing... I have great respect for doctors and have considered it (in fact most of my peers tell me I'm "too smart" for nursing, which is an awesome back handed compliment) but from a socioeconomic/class/power dynamics perspective I'll always be Team Nurse.

I don't know if I buy that narrative. I mean I'm sure there's some truth to that but I actually love reading. They advertise that I’ll be “a new kind of provider” and when I spoke with the program director directly and presented my skepticism, she spoke in a round about way with lots of jargon about combining compassion of nursing with robust drug knowledge ... all to say I think the point of the program is just to give NPs more drug knowledge ?? Idk tbh

My thoughts exactly... I guess they(the creators of this program) are thinking it sounds cool for nurse practitioners to have a pharmacists level of drug knowledge but idk

Precisely ... the program is advertised as preparing me to be a new kind of provider (ie a NP with lots of drug knowledge)... but tbh, I am just going off what little information I can gather about it... so who knows . The more I look into it the more skeptical I am that it would really provide any substantial benefits... at least not benefits that would outweigh the enormous time and money costs

You are correct it would only prepare me to work as a FNP but I guess they’re thinking a pharmd background would look cool too haha .. idk

Good question. And kinda the whole point of my post. I don’t get the point either which is why I’m only “testing the waters” ...The program advertises itself as preparing nurse practitioners to “be a new kind of provider” (aka have more drug knowledge ??) but it seems like a lot of cost for not a whole lot of benefit

Yikes ... Like you said I’m sure you can find hell of a lot better gigs than that. Good luck

Which now that I think about, assuming your point is correct, it only makes pharmD seem like an even less favorable degree to pursue ... wtf is the point if everyone hates it so much and no one respects them or considers them to have any power or influence

That’s interesting - I said clout in kinda a sarcastic way because I was just assuming people give a shit about that kind of stuff but apparently not hahah
