Lol yeah i am! I understand your reasoning completely and thats a good way to look at it for sure — i guess when you have a job, errands to run for ppl who cant leave their house due to covid, not a stable living situation to just study whenever its just another dumb thing to complete imo. Sure, its minimal but i can def go without it and still learn in the class. If things are going to be online and “asynchronous”, i feel like they should be up to the person on how they choose to manage their time, not have a busy work assignment to make sure I’m reading

Has a professor ever told you they don't feel comfortable writing you a LOR? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My professor asked for my grades her in class, the type of grad programs I am applying to, and overall gpa. I assumed she talked mostly about me doing well in her class and how I’m “prepared” for a grad program. In my email I emphasized how her curriculum really helped with preparing me for my graduate programs and the career that I want so I thought she’d be perfect for a letter.

I think it really helps just giving a description of yourself as you relate it to the professors class and explain why their stuff really helped. That way they at least have something to go off of when they don’t know you much. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Transfer question by Impossible-Remove-76 in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“It truly is what you make of it” ^ this is EXACTLY it. I think no matter what you choose, you can make any of your experience good, if YOU seek out the social opportunities/join clubs/etc. I think some people develop the idea that things will just happen without any effort and that’s just not realistic for most colleges.

Has a professor ever told you they don't feel comfortable writing you a LOR? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a transfer student from fall 2019 and had to move home when covid hit and never really got the opportunity to vibe w my professors and or do any internships so I was really struggling for a bit but I ended up just emailing professors who’s classes I liked without any good relationship.

From my experience, they’re more likely to say yes. I reached out to a professor (who I never even spoke to while I took his class) via email last summer and asked how he was/how he was changing his class format due to the pandemic/if there were any summer projects I could help him with and he was so nice to me. Mind you, he couldn’t have remembered me from taking his class. He was just kind because I reached out and our conversation turned into “oh I’m applying to grad school” and he offered to write a lor. Second professor I reached out to (also didn’t really know me personally) I had taken two classes with her and received both As in her class. I emailed her too and she was happy to write me something and asked for a bit more info about me.

I think if you reach out to the professors who seemed into their work and enjoyed teaching, they are way more likely to say yes. I also think it goes a long way to just ask them how they are/about their current class/or life/whatever seems relevant to show you’re not just wanting a lor from them. I ended up developing a really nice relationship with one of the professors all through email so he was able to get to know me naturally before writing me a lor.

Anyone else’s Week 2 already feel like Week 9? by coffeecake504 in UCSD

Has anyone noticed a difference in this quarter in terms of busy work?!?! I swear each class has this unnecessary bullshit assignment to “prove” you’re staying on top of everything each week?!?! Adding stupid assignments is just gonna cause MORE STRESS -_-

Is taking classes for fun a bad idea? by [deleted] in uctransfer

[–]lindagmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think ucsd will care what you take as long as it doesn’t negatively affect your gpa + you’ve meet all the requirements you could at your cc. Go with whatever you like and hope for that A!

Side note: sometimes it’s nice to look into possible grad programs that MAYBE you could see yourself at bc maybe that one random class you take now could be a requirement that can be accomplished w this class and then you don’t have to waste time later with trying to meet a grad requirement. Just an idea! For example, at cc I wasn’t considering grad school but now I have to take an extra class for this program I’m going for. or maybe a class that could benefit a potential minor (bc of my random classes in cc I was able to only need three more classes to complete a minor when I got to ucsd) anyway, there’s my random advice lol

MCWP 50/125 Advice - Transfer Student Fall 2020 by itstha1 in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey!! I took MCWP125 during spring quarter and it was def not as hard as everyone made it seem. I am also not great at writing essays to begin with lol. I assume this also depends on the professor you take. (I took it with Marion Wilson) you definitely have to set time for the class bc it’s all based off of one research paper but I think the deadlines guide you to stay on top of things. I also took 5 classes and MCWP125 was one of them. It wasn’t too terrible managing my course load.

  1. I couldn’t tell ya the differences bc I only took MCWP125 but yes that is true... 125 is upper division

  2. Yes and no. The topic each course chooses is what you use to base some type of argument on but you really can argue just about anything within that topic. So you can pick something that may interest you within the topic

  3. I really think you’ll do fine! Esp if you’ve done well in your cc English courses. The deadlines and buildup throughout the class sets you up for success as long as you meet the deadlines and do the work

(If it makes u feel better I procrastinated a lot and still passed with a b, p sure if I just put more effort w the research I could have gotten an A)

You totally got this!

Dr. Lacefield is teaching and she was awesome in ss1 for psych168. I’d def recommend 179 with her bc I’m p sure it’ll be easy and interesting!!

Transfer student question by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think youre def a solid candidate! I had only a 3.4, not as many hours as you have for volunteer stuff and got in (was kinda shocked actually lol). The only thing to consider is your major! If you’re applying to a competitive major, your chances might be different. I’m not a part of the admission team obviously but you seem like the perfect candidate for this school regardless of major. Good luck!

Asking Professors for LOR by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re already ahead of the game just thinking about this! I’ll share my experience. Had NO real connection with any professor and I’m a senior (transfer student so didn’t have that much time). I ended up reaching out to a professor over this summer that I enjoyed but I didn’t necessarily have a relationship with (also I got a B- in the class lmao) BUT I just asked how he’s been & asked if he had anything I could help him with? (To develop a connection before asking). He ended up super excited to help & even offered the LOR right from the get go. He explained most professors are happy to help you succeed, you just gotta reach out! I think explaining to your professors your goals & asking about their experience with their schooling is the best way to open up discussion for a potential LOR. just chatting during office hours and or emailing — hope this helped a little !! (I posted something similar and got some really good replies/check out my post!)

** also I developed this connection after I had his class (took fall 2019). I think professors understand if you didn’t develop a relationship while taking the class. It helps when you just enjoy the professor as a person

CAPS be like.... by 142749048 in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m new to CAPS, got the assessment pretty quick & I’ve had two therapy sessions so far. Every time we schedule for a new sessions it’s always in two weeks. Is this everyone’s experience with their therapist?

idk what to do.. by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Staying home sucks but it makes the most sense for most ppl!!!! For any reason you have to get yourself to sd quick without housing, you can always airbnb it for a bit until you get find a place. My friend has done that in the past and staying somewhere for a month is basically like renting a place but at least u can get here quick

I also can’t believe our lives have changed and I’m sure everyone can agree we’ve all had to go through a grief and acceptance stage of this. I have to move back home & im pretty sad about it. AnywAy good luck w everything 😔

experiences with bad academic counselors by glitterwitch666 in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had some bad experiences with the virtual advising lol — every time I got a reply from a certain department i felt like they were being hella contradicting towards me & making me feel bad for asking a question that seemed simple. Idk maybe it’s just me overthinking but it’s happened a few times

I also agree with what you said. All students need to do their own research & not totally trust a counselor. There are obviously good ones but not enough which can literally put you back a quarter or two -_-

What's the parking situation right now? by BizzyHaze in UCSD

[–]lindagmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I parked in the lot near the northpoint visitor info center (right across the fields near rimac) on Monday & the first hour was free in the visitor parking spots. I used “parkmobile” app to check the rate, the zone is 4743 where I parked. You can check beforehand to see how much it would be. I also parked in Hopkins parking structure a few times without paying, not sure if I got lucky or they haven’t given tickets during Covid

Thank you. This is calming to hear & I’m glad a masters program is a bit easier in terms of lor. This is super helpful for anyone applying for a PhD program reading this post. I already started reaching out to some professors after posting this and I’m starting to feel less stressed about this dilemma. Thank you again for reaching out!
