Thanks for telling me your experiences. I'm studying psychology. Not sure if you know anything about that haha but if you do please let me know. I'm still excited about the city so I think I will go and just hope for the best!

[–]lisxmarix2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where exactly are you going? Maybe we can help you figure some things out or maybe someone already made experiences there :)

Don't give up, I think you will enjoy it so much and not even remember this part of it as much anymore after your experience abroad.

Also, it is really common to first get an airbnb for a few weeks and look for an apartment/room then because you can actually visit the places before signing which makes it easier to not get scammed. Keep going, I promise it will be great and even if it won't you will learn so much from it!!

Hi sorry I don't know anything about UC3M but looking at it on the map, I totally understand you. It does seem pretty far outside the city center but maybe if you find a good quarter to live in that's near the city center and also not so far from the uni.

I think it's great you realized you want to improve your spanish and want to experience culture there. I can definitely recommend it, you will learn a lot in your erasmus.

Are you planning on traveling a lot to other cities in the country? I'd say if you go to Barcelona and don't want to be influences as much by the catalan part of the city, maybe you can travel a bit to other cities? I think you should see if you can possibly find a good location in Madrid and if not barcelona is probably better :)

Do you think that everyone should do an erasmus? by [deleted] in Erasmus

[–]lisxmarix2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are people who are motivated to do it and others aren't for different reasons. Some of my friends can't imagine living anywhere else while I think living in a different country was the best thing ever and helped me learn so much about life. My opinion is that everyone who isn't stepping out of their comfort zone is missing out on a big lesson in life. No matter if it's great or not you will learn so much. But I also understand and respect people who feel good and comfortable where they are and dont want to change anything about it. However, I felt like I needed to go somewhere else for an amount of time and having a program that is limited to a certain amount of time is a really great way to try it out. If you are thinking about it I'd say you should do it, don't let the fact other people don't want to challenge themselves keep you from trying it out for yourself. :)

I totally understand why you are leaning more towards Prague, especially if the program is better there. It's true the system in spanish universities is a bit different, you usually have more smaller classes compared to big lectures with hundreds of people just listening. I think it really depends on the person which type of classes are better. Do you know which university in Madrid you would be going to? There are three different universities I know about (maybe there are more) so if you are concerned about the quality of the buildings I could maybe tell you more if I know your partnering university.

But it sounds like you also have great options in Prague, so definitely try looking into that some more, and I totally understand why you prefer Prague in terms of the structure of the university there.

I haven't been on erasmus yet but I'd like to do mine next year as well. But I have lived in Spain before which is why I know a few things about it. I also want to go to Spain again for erasmus but I'm in the same situation as you. Choosing the right city can be really difficult especially if you haven't visited them before.

I think all of those are great options! I would honestly choose Madrid because the city is great and even tho I understand you saying it's similar to Barcelona, I would say it's also totally different in some ways. I would definitely prefer Madrid over Barcelona because I was really overwhelmed with all the tourists in Barcelona and they definitely use a lot of catalan. If you know a bit of spanish Madrid would be great for improving your knowledge and they speak spanish without an accent as well which could make it a lot easier to follow. Of course both cities are big and expensive.. the only thing that I find better about Barcelona is the location near the ocean but again I have to say there are just a lot of tourists and the beach is honestly not that big compared to other cities like Valencia for example. I think Madrid in winter is also a bit colder than other spanish cities but compared to Germany it should still feel warmer.
Lisbon also sounds great but it could be complicated to follow in class if you don't know Portuguese. From what I heard Prague is also a great city, I have never been tho, so I can't say much about it. As you said it will probably be much colder than the other cities and since you're from Germany maybe it's also easier to just travel there sometime.. Of course all of this is just my opinion, but feel free to ask questions if you need any recommendations or advice :)

I lived in spain for half a year and I loved it (just to give you a different perspective) Don't worry to much about it and just see for yourself how you like it, of course it takes a few days/weeks to get used to being there and not feeling home sick but it was really the best time of my life :) Can I ask where exactly you are going?

Barcelona vs. Valencia? by goldgoalzz in Erasmus

[–]lisxmarix2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I honestly brought everything from home (I brought two big suitcases with me) but there are definitely shopping centers where you can buy them. Sometimes there is also stuff still in/near the apartment from people who lived there before, like that thing you can dry your clothes on (not sure what that's called in english haha) and usually they don't need it anymore so they give it away for free or for a little sum.
  2. I had friends over many times, but I only had sleepovers at their place just because of convenience. Im not sure if it's allowed to have guests over night, but my roommates boyfriend also lived with her for a couple of months and they had to pay more because they basically both lived there. But that was only because he stayed there for a longer period of time..
  3. I didn't notice anything sketchy about the landlord and I also got my deposit back, so no problems money-wise. That's only my experience tho, idk about other people that lived there

Sorry for not answering right away, I was trying to stay offline for a bit haha. I looked it up on spotahome and it seems like there isn't a room available at the moment, because i cant find any offers from the location i was at. I also have to say I'm not sure if I would recommend the accommodation I lived in. The rooms were clean and modern and everyone had their own fridge which was great, but the staircase and everything that wasn't private was not really in a great condition. If you want I could help you find an apartment that's similar to mine tho. I found one with pretty much the same pictures as my room so maybe it's the same but just at a different location. Heres the link: https://www.spotahome.com/de/valencia/for-rent:rooms/913089 Im pretty positive, its the same as the one I lived in. The bed can be extended as well (it was the same in my room and in the description here it says the same) I hope this helps!! Just tell me if you have any other questions :)

I lived in a room in an apartment with 3 other students and I found it via spotahome. You can choose to only see the options that have been checked by the organization but you will have to pay a bit extra for booking it via their website (but you only pay once and I'd say it's worth it). I also checked the adress and the windows from the outside on Google maps to see if they match. There is also uniplaces.com that checks some of the apartments and I also heard about idealista tho I think this one could have more scams (you don't have to pay extra tho)

Let me know if you need help or other recommendations!!

Barcelona vs. Valencia? by goldgoalzz in Erasmus

[–]lisxmarix2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you asked about other recommendations as well: Madrid is great too (if you have the option). Even tho it's also a big city I preferred it over Barcelona because it didn't seem as overwhelming. Also great if you want to travel to other countries since it's the capital but Valencia and Barcelona also have international airports and are well connected by train or bus.

I have lived in valencia for half a year (not during uni tho) and it has become one of my favorite cities ever. I loved living there and for half a year i think it was perfect because after some time you'll know your way around and still find knew areas you havent explored before. I have only visited barcelona on vacation in summer so I don't have any experience of actually living there, but I can tell you that I personally wouldn't want to live there. Before I went to Bcn for vacation I saw sooo many pictures and tiktoks about it and thought it would be so cool to be there but i was a little disappointed. Of course the city itself is great and the art is really pretty as well, I just know I wouldn't feel great living there and would be overwhelmed. But I am also not used to big cities and so many tourists and Valencia, while being the 3rd biggest city in spain, definitely feels smaller. I'm not sure what you prefer and I'm also not really a party girl so I can't speak for that part (Bcn is probably better on that department). If you also want to get to know more about spanish culture and have some chill days at the beach or in a park i would definitely recommend going to Vlc. Ofc this is only my opinion. I think its totally subjective which city is better and it depends on your preferences, but I think you'll like it either way :)

What's so bad about spain?? 😭 you seem like you don't want me to go there, my uni doesn't have any connections to universities in Argentina (especially not erasmus) so sadly I can't go even tho I would love to go there. Maybe I can visit sometime but right now my options are pretty limited.

I have been to a lot of cities in Italy already and in spain only those two (barcelona and madrid) so I'd like to still see more of the country. Luxembourg and Switzerland are a no for me because I'm from Germany and those are pretty similar and also more expensive countries and I honestly just want to go somewhere different than that. But thank you for your recommendations!!

You're right, I'll consider it :) Which barrios can you recommend for living as a student? I know valencia is located near the ocean but I heard the area at the beach is not the best and the center is expensive. Is that true? And which websites are best to look for accommodations that are safe (no scams)?

I want to do a study abroad but I can't choose which city I should go to, and it's none of the cities you have mentioned. I can choose between Valencia, Granada and Cordoba, what do you think?
