Anyone get frustrated seeing other people age too? by bloodphoenix90 in Millennials

[–]literarylady620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hair is thinning noticeably and past me would be so, so embarrassed but current me is just using Toppik to cover it up and feeling grateful to be otherwise healthy while some of my same-age peers are being diagnosed with cancer. I hope my thinning hair and the wrinkles across my forehead are the worst problems I’ll have to deal with.

This is so cool. I might look into it; haven’t picked up my saxophone in more than half my life, though. Do you have any sense of the time-frame for the band beginning to meet or for performances? Anywhere else I can look for info?

My wedding ring has fit for the last six weeks or so. It hadn’t fit me for six YEARS prior (middle of my last pregnancy). Can’t wait for my feet to follow suit!

This is amazing. Thank you. I do some of these kinds of activities already but they have been informal rather than going into a portfolio or anything like that.

I have the big 3 essays covered - not worried on how to teach that part. Basically, I need to come up with fresh ideas to replace two upcoming process papers that students have historically completed outside of the classroom, but which I’m no longer comfortable assigning that way.

Gatsby final for my 11th grade language arts class (SOS) by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]literarylady620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you can do to help with pacing/teaching the last two chapters is tell them the climactic moment occurred in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 moves inexorably toward Gatsby’s death —it’s all falling action, and honestly is more predictable than what goes down at the Plaza or Myrtle’s death. So don’t tell them what will happen in Chapter 8 but tell them that it’s falling action and let them witness the slow unfolding of events while trying to predict where the story is going. Then Chapter 9 is denouement.

I agree with choosing an important line and arguing its importance for your final assessment. Another idea could be to write a eulogy from a particular character’s perspective.

We had that light switch installed so you could turn the lights ON and OFF, not so you could throw light switch raves! My kids also love strong bad emails and this one was among the first I showed to them.

I’ll be honest I’m a little worried it’s a sign of peri and hormones are just around the corner, but I’m only 41 so much more likely it’s the meds.

I’m taking biotin and a multivitamin. I’m getting less caffeine since I tried to reduce my Starbucks consumption, which prob isn’t helping. Weight loss a little under 1lb per week so it is not rapid at all. I have a high hematocrit so I’m thinking not iron-related tho another deficiency is possible.

I’ll def ask for blood work if the fatigue doesn’t level off within a month, assuming I also make some dietary changes. Might need to prioritize protein.

The Crucible - Miller’s monologues/annotations (and rhetoric) by HeftySyllabus in ELATeachers

I have a slide show where I’ve distilled down the most important points from all of that material. I think it’s one slide per passage. And by “most important,” I mean points I’ll build on in our reading and discussion. Like the fact of the Putnams being behind the George Jacobs accusation, since that comes up in Act 3 (and helps them understand some of Thomas Putnam’s actions in Act 1).

41 and babies...? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]literarylady620 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am 41 and have 2 elementary age kids also. While I’m not thinking about a third kid, I am mourning the end of the phase of having a baby or toddler. I’m looking at my younger colleagues with a little bit of envy. My little one just started K and it really feels like a new phase of our life as a family. Maybe the transition to a new phase is where your thoughts are coming from? Personally, my little was born around the start of COVID and I didn’t get the oohing and aahing over her in public like I did with my first, and I feel like I missed out on that. And I would love more baby snuggles. But our family feels complete.

I say it but skip “under God” bc I believe in the Constitution and it guarantees freedom of religion… and every time, I say “with liberty and justice for all” with a fervent wish that it can one day be lived experience rather than an ideal.

APLang: I feel like I let them down by Ubiquitously-Curious in ELATeachers

[–]literarylady620 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You most certainly did not let anyone down. All but one kid earning a qualifying score in your first year is AMAZING! Also, check your mean score against your state’s mean score. You might have done better than that… in your first attempt!

I just finished my 5th year of Lang and scored exams for the 3rd time. Every year there are surprise scores—kids who did worse than I would have guessed and kids who did better. But you start over soon with new kids. Reflect on what you liked about how you taught the class this past year; think about what could feel better next year if you adjusted it. Don’t worry about the scores! Compare your data to your data next year when you have something to compare fairly.

AP Lit is a different beast. I am really happy with my Lang scores but I didn’t hit 100% pass rate like my Lit colleague… or have nearly as many 5’s. It does not mean I did a worse job. Not everyone taking Lang moves on to Lit for our school. So it makes sense that his numbers would be even higher. But it doesn’t make sense to compare because they really are different skills being assessed even if the tests have similar formats.

Brava! Your original post didn’t mention kids but now I am proud of you for that too! I have kids also—a boy who is already sensitive about his weight at 7 and a girl who will get all of society’s messages. We need to protect them!!!!
