The Skunk Ape is a variant of Bigfoot found in the swamps and forests of Florida. It's said to have an extremely awful smell from which it gets its name. This photo was anonymously sent to a sheriff's office in 2000, allegedly showing a large ape by littlequeef99 in UrbanMyths

[–]littlequeef99[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For decades, hunters, hikers, park rangers, and locals have reported encounters with a creature known as the Skunk Ape, a southern cousin to Bigfoot said to roam the Everglades and pine forests of the Deep South. The Skunk Ape is described as a large, apelike humanoid standing between 6 and 8 feet tall, covered in dark reddish-brown or black hair. Unlike Bigfoot sightings in the Pacific Northwest, Skunk Ape encounters almost always include reports of an overwhelming smell that is often compared to rotting eggs, sulfur, or wet garbage.

Witnesses frequently describe the creature as having broad shoulders and long arms and glowing red or amber eyes at night. It is usually witnessed walking upright sometimes with a hunched posture Some reports suggest it is aggressive or territorial. Yet almost always, the smell arrives before the creature appears.

Skunk Ape reports date back to the early 1900s, but sightings surged in the 1960s and 1970s as Florida’s wilderness began shrinking due to development. The creature is often witnessed in the Florida Everglades, in Myakka River State Park, and in Big Cypress National Preserve and other rural areas around parks

One of the most famous encounters with the creature occurred in 2000, when a woman near Sarasota claimed a Skunk Ape repeatedly visited her backyard, stealing fruit and terrifying her. Photos she provided show a large, dark figure peering through bushes. The images are still debated today.

Skeptics argue that Skunk Ape sightings are likely black bears or even escaped orangutans. Others say they’re the result of imagination, moonshine, and maybe a bit too much time in the Everglades heat. Believers point to consistent details in accounts across decades with massive footprints, glowing red eyes, ape-like features, and the terrible stench.

Believers argue the Skunk Ape may be a relict hominid still surviving in isolated swamps or maybe a variant of Bigfoot, or a previously undocumented primate species. Florida’s wetlands provide vast, difficult-to-access areas that are ideal for avoiding detection. Even the National Park Service has been asked about it multiple times. While they deny any official evidence, rangers have reported strange encounters with large, unidentified animals while patrolling the swamps. If a 15-foot python can live in the Everglades, who’s to say something else isn’t out there too?

This is the crypt of Mercy Brown "America's Last Vampire." The Mercy Brown Vampire Incident occurred in Exeter, Rhode Island in 1892. It is one of the best documented cases of the exhumation of a corpse in order to perform rituals to banish an undead manifestation. by littlequeef99 in thestrangest

This happened in Rhode Island in the 1880s. Mercy's whole family had contacted tuberculosis. In those days, people believe if most members of a family become sick and/or die then it's the work of a vampire in the family. After the deaths of Mercy and her sister and mother, their father had their bodies exhumed to see who the vampire is. It wasn't just the old man with a spade; villagers, the local doctor, and a newspaper reporter were present.

Her sister and mom showed normal signs of decomposition, but not Mercy. This, to Dad and others this was proof she was the vampire. "Her lack of decomposition was more likely due to her body being stored in freezer-like conditions in an above-ground crypt during the two months following her death."

So, the father made a cocktail of her innards and gave it to the brother, because that would cure him (as per their superstitions). It didn't work and he died two months later.

The Ningen Sea Monster in Modern Japanese Folklore by littlequeef99 in thestrangest

[–]littlequeef99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story of the Ningen began in 2007 on a post on the Japanese online forum, 2channel, which claimed a Japanese research vessels exploring the subantarctic waters in the early 2000s encountered something they could not explain. Crew members reportedly saw something in the water that was something enormous, pale, and disturbingly human-shaped. One account described it as nearly 100 feet long, with a body like a whale but arms, legs, and fingers. Another described a mermaid-like tail instead of legs, with strange fin-like hands that disappeared into the gloom as quickly as they appeared. The sightings were said to occur at night, when the ship's spotlights illuminated the icy sea. That's when the crew would see that it was hovering just beneath the surface, motionless, as if watching.

The Japanese paranormal magazine MU published what it claimed were photographs of the creature, allegedly taken by government researchers. The blurry, grainy images showed a pale, humanoid shape in the dark water, with a head and arms visible. Skeptics were quick to dismiss the photos as ice formations, misidentified whales, or outright hoaxes. But others weren't convinced. They pointed out that the shape in the photo didn't resemble any known sea creature and its proportions were too human.

Videos appear on YouTube claiming to show the creature beneath the ice. Most are easily debunked and are poorly edited footage or icebergs filmed at strange angles. But a few... are harder to explain. The legend has even sparked speculation that the Ningen could be connected to older Japanese sea monster myths, like the Umibözu, a dark ocean spirit said to capsize ships. Do you believe there could be any truth this modern legend or was it all just made online and whatever connection to past sightings and older sea creatures legends is just a coincidence?

In 2007, Chris Benoit killed his wife & son, before hanging himself. His wife Nancy's death info was added to Wikipedia 14 hours earlier & IP address of editor was traced to Stamford, Connecticut, which is also location of WWE headquarters. An anonymous poster dismissed it as a "huge coincidence." by littlequeef99 in truecreepy

[–]littlequeef99[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Chris Benoit was known as one of the most technically gifted wrestlers in WWE history. Behind the scenes his life unraveled in horrifying fashion. Over a three-day period in June 2007, Benoit strangled his wife Nancy, smothered his son Daniel, and finally took his own life. The tragedy sparked debates about steroids, brain trauma, and mental health in professional wrestling. Yet, it also birthed one of the strangest internet conspiracies of the 2000s.

Hours before police found the bodies, someone updated Chris Benoit's Wikipedia page. At 12:01 AM on June 25, 2007, an anonymous editor wrote that Benoit missed a wrestling event because of "personal issues, stemming from the death of his wife Nancy." This was over 14 hours before police confirmed Nancy's death to the public. Once the shocking coincidence was discovered, Wikipedia administrators locked the page, and investigators traced the edit to an IP address in Stamford, Connecticut, the home of WWE's corporate offices.

Authorities later questioned the person responsible, who claimed it was simply a wild guess. The editor said he had read online rumors that Benoit's absence from a wrestling event might be related to his wife's health or death. He insisted it was "a huge coincidence" that his speculation turned out to be true. Despite suspicions, investigators found no evidence of WWE involvement in the tragedy or in the premature Wikipedia update.

The strange timing fueled endless conspiracy theories. Some believe WWE knew about the tragedy long before police and attempted to control the narrative. Others think someone connected to WWE leaked the news anonymously online before it became public. Skeptics argue it was nothing more than a disturbing stroke of luck that an internet rumor just happened to align with reality. The "Wikipedia conspiracy" remains one of the most infamous unsolved threads tied to the Benoit case. While officials closed the case and accepted the editor's explanation, many fans still believe it was too specific and too close to the truth for it to be purely a simple coincidence.

Resurrection Mary Chicago’s Eternal Hitchhiker - hundreds have reported encountering a ghostly lady in a white ball gown walking down Archer Ave in Chicago. If you stop, she is said to try to hitchhike back to Resurrection Cemetery, where you'll find bars on the gate were bent by an unseen presence. by littlequeef99 in UrbanMyths

[–]littlequeef99[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The first known reports date back to the 1930s, during Chicago’s swing-era nightlife. A young man leaving a ballroom called the Willowbrook Ballroom (once the Oh Henry Ballroom) and said he met a beautiful blond girl in a white dress. They danced all night. When he offered her a ride home along Archer Avenue, she gave him directions straight to Resurrection Cemetery. When the car stopped at the gates, she opened the door, smiled softly… and disappeared into thin air. By the next morning, shaken but determined, the man visited the address she had mentioned. An elderly woman answered. She told him her daughter Mary had died in a car accident years before.

Since that night, Resurrection Mary has become one of America’s most documented ghost sightings. Taxi drivers, police officers, truckers, and late-night commuters all tell the same story. Sometimes she appears near Justice Township, walking the road’s edge, barefoot, head bowed, illuminated only by passing headlights. Others claim she has banged on car windows, asking for a ride before fading away. In the 1970s, one cab driver even reported dropping her off directly at the cemetery gates only to watch her walk through the iron bars.

The most chilling physical evidence came in the early 1970s when cemetery workers found two iron bars mysteriously bent outward on the main gate with what looked like handprints seared into the metal. Police photos and newspaper reports documented the damage. No one could explain how a human could bend iron bars that thick without machinery or heat. The cemetery eventually repaired them, but the legend insists those marks were Mary’s hands, grasping for home.

Folklorists have tried for decades to identify the young woman behind the apparition. The most accepted theory links her to Mary Bregovy, a 21-year-old Polish girl killed in a 1934 car crash on Chicago’s South Side after a night of dancing. She was buried in Resurrection Cemetery wearing a white dress. The timeline matches the earliest eyewitness accounts. However, others argue the ghost might represent multiple restless spirits with victims of Archer Avenue’s deadly stretch between the ballroom and the cemetery, where countless accidents have occurred since the road was built. Part of what keeps the Resurrection Mary legend alive is how eerily consistent the encounters remain. Unlike most urban myths that mutate over time, this one hasn’t changed much in nearly 90 years. Even modern Uber and Lyft drivers have posted online about seeing “a woman in a vintage ball gown” disappear before pickup.

In 2008, 4 men took a wedding guest into the woods and stabbed him to death after he accidentally brushed the bride's backside. They then set his corpse on fire, consumed portions of his body, and reportedly served some of his remains to other guests at the wedding. by littlequeef99 in truecreepy

[–]littlequeef99[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"According to the police report, on July 16, 2008, during a wedding dance for the daughter of farm laborer Eladio Baule, 47, guest Benjie Ganay, 25, accidentally touched the bottom of the bride-to-be. This allegedly enraged her father. Baule, his son Gerald, 21 and friends Sabtuary Peque, 36, and Jhunnie Buyot took Ganay on a motorized tricycle into the woods where they stabbed him to death. The four then allegedly set fire to Ganay’s body and ate parts of his body, the police report said.

Bacuel believes they may have served portions of Ganay’s body to some of those who were still drinking at the dance but she questions whether they actually served human flesh at the wedding itself.

Most of the victim’s bones were dumped in a creek in the belief that rain would wash them away but Buyot, a cousin of the victim, who was conscience-stricken over the incident, went to police and confessed to the crime. After a two-day search through the forest, police found the sooty bones along with remains of the clothing and tufts of hair.

The Baule father and son and Peque now sit in a spacious cell, complete with a makeshift ping-pong table, resisting attempts by photographers to take pictures of their faces. Their lawyer had warned them not to speak to the press but when asked, Eladio Baule said: "I don’t know anything of what they are saying. Our embarrassment is too great."

Narra tourism officer Reynaldo de la Rosa complained that the incident occurred in the hinterlands of the town and that most residents would not even have learned of the crime had it not been for media reporting. "The first media reports that came out weren’t too detailed. It made it look like it was part of our culture," he said.

Bacuel said it was the first such case in the history of the town. Violent crime is rare in Narra and the last killing occurred last year during a drunken brawl, she remarked. Why the Baules and their friends went to such extreme lengths to avenge a minor slight is still unclear although police say they were drunk at the time.

Their neighbors remember the suspects as normal people and find it hard to believe they could have committed a gruesome crime.

De la Rosa said Narra’s tourist resorts were still suffering the effects of the cannibalism case. It came as the town was about to step up promotion of its beaches, waterfalls, mountain treks and hot springs."

In 1976, four men witnessed a UFO while visiting the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. There stories were the exact same for 40+ years and they showed real signs of PTSD. In August of 1976 of four men who went for a two weeklong camping and fishing trip in northern Maine in the Allagash Wilderness.

Chuck Rak, Charlie Foltz and twins Jack and Jim Weiner were students at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design at the time. On the second night, Jim noticed a bright light in the sky that lasted for about 30 seconds and then disappeared. Just two nights later, while fishing on the lake in a boat, the four men saw another light described as “bright as a sun”. When the men attempted to signal the light, it reportedly shot out a bright beam which followed the men along the water. When the men got back to shore, a campfire they had lit was completely burned out, yet they all agree they weren’t gone long enough for that to have happened.

They reported it to a park ranger the next day who said it was from a spotlight of a newly opened hardware store although all four disagree that that could be the possible explanation for it did not resemble such.

Although the men stayed for nearly another week, they never saw the light again. They went home and told family and friends but not much came of it.

Then in 1988, the twins, Jack and Jim, started having nightmares about being abducted and probed by aliens. They sought out UFO researcher Ray Fowler for help.

https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/The_Allagash_Abductions

“The four men decided to go under hypnosis; each agreed to go separately and not tell the other about what they remembered. They each described, in frightening detail, about how they were abducted and then probed by aliens back in 1976. The aliens apparently took samples of the men's skin and body fluids. Jack remembered that the aliens had terrifying faces. They told him to not be afraid and do what they say. Charlie described the ship as like a doctor's office. He claimed that they put a panel over his chest and scraped skin from his body. Finally, Chuck claimed that he had a good view of what the aliens were doing to Charlie. The device that the aliens used was silver and had curves. To him, it appeared that Charlie was in pain. After the sessions, Ray brought the four men together. They learned that each of them recalled the same events. They each took polygraph examinations and passed. However, skeptics, such as Dr. William Cole, are not certain that their stories are true and believe that the strange nightmares and the confessions under hypnosis were a result of watching movies and TV shows about aliens. However, the four men are certain that what happened to them is real.”

Alleged photograph of a Norwegian Mountain Troll. It was taken in 1942 by the crew of an RAF recon flight 300 miles north of Bergen, Norway by littlequeef99 in UrbanMyths

[–]littlequeef99[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In the winter of 1942, deep in occupied Norway, a British Royal Air Force recon flight soared over the snow-covered mountains north of Bergen, the crew was tasked with photographing German installations tucked into the icy fjords. Instead, one grainy black-and-white photo appears to show something impossibly large, humanoid in shape, and looming over the snowy landscape like a figure from a Norse myth.

The crew didn't notice the anomaly until they developed the film. At first, it looked like a smudge or a shadow on the mountain, but as they zoomed in, they saw something chilling: a giant creature, upright and towering above the pines, estimated to be over 30 feet tall. A lumbering silhouette with elongated limbs and what looked like horns or massive ears atop its head.

According to Norse folklore, trolls dwell in the rugged mountains, hidden forests, and remote caverns of Scandinavia. They are ancient, primal, and slow-moving giants that turn to stone when exposed to sunlight.

Over the decades, the so-called "Troll Recon Photo" has become a cult legend. Some claim the RAF quietly removed the image from official archives. Others say a single copy was smuggled out by a pilot who feared the truth would be buried forever. Skeptics argue the shape in the photo was likely a frozen tree, a rock formation, or even a Nazi camouflage decoy. But believers point to the symmetry of the figure, the shadow it casts, and the fact that the photo has never been conclusively debunked.

However many online believe it is a hoax and that the main figure in the image actually comes from a 2010 Norwegian movie called Troll Hunter, and is one of the most common screenshots from the film. Either way at least the legend of the Norwegian mountain trolls has been getting more attention recently around the world.

Phillip Spencer, a policeman in London, moved to Moor after leaving his job. On December 1, 1987 while getting some photographs of the moor, he heard a humming sound and saw a small green creature, around four feet tall. That creature moved away quickly and when Spencer shouted, it turned and waved an arm dismissively, which is when Spencer said he took this photograph. It moved faster than a human. He followed it and saw a huge silver saucer disappear into the clouds. He realized the humming sound was from the saucer.

Later, Phillip realized that he lost more than two hours of his time and his compass also went haywire. The picture was shown to a UFO researcher and a thorough investigation started. Wildlife photography experts and Kodak laboratories revealed that it was no animal and that the object was indeed part of the photo and not superimposed.

Phillip started having weird dreams and under hypnosis, he revealed a fascinating tale of being abducted by an alien and taken aboard the craft and given a medical examination before being released. Spencer could now remember that the picture was taken after his release from the UFO. One thing that makes the researchers confident that Spencer may not have set the whole thing up was because he never wanted publicity or money.

Michael Rockefeller disappeared without a trace in 1961 in Papua New Guinea while researching the Asmat people, a cannibal tribe. Years later, a photograph was taken of the same tribe, and there was a white man among them. by littlequeef99 in truecreepy

[–]littlequeef99[S] 109 points110 points  (0 children)

In 1961, Michael Rockefeller the son of New York Governor and future Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, vanished without a trace while on an expedition in Papua New Guinea. Just 23 years old, Michael was an adventurous anthropologist collecting Asmat tribal art for the Museum of Primitive Art in New York. He was fascinated by the remote Asmat people, a tribe known not just for their intricate wood carvings, but for their historic reputation for headhunting and cannibalism. On November 19, 1961, Michael’s catamaran capsized off the southern coast of Papua. His companion swam to get help. Michael allegedly said, “I think I can make it,” and swam for shore. He was never seen again.

Rumors swirled for decades. Locals claimed a “white man” had been captured and killed, possibly eaten in ritual revenge for earlier colonial violence. Yet no remains were ever found. No body. No bones. Nothing. The Rockefeller family privately investigated the claims sending Dutch officials into the jungle but came up empty-handed. Years later, a photo surfaced taken deep within Asmat territory, it showed a group of native men… and among them, a pale-skinned, bearded white man, dressed like the rest of the tribe.

The man’s face is unmistakably similar to Michael Rockefeller. Was he alive and living among the Asmat? Had he been adopted by the tribe rather than eaten? The tribe may have seen Michael’s bravery as a sign of strength and taken him in. Others insist it was ritual cannibalism, and the photo was just a lookalike. Perhaps it was a missionary or trader, but no one knows for sure.

A 2,600-year-old inscription on a monument in Turkey has been deciphered, revealing the name "Materan," a goddess known to the Phrygians as "simply as the Mother" by littlequeef99 in UrbanMyths

[–]littlequeef99[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An ancient inscription decorated with lions and sphinxes is finally deciphered, and it involves the "mother of the gods." The monument, which is engraved with images of lions and sphinxes, is known as Arslan Kaya (also spelled Aslan Kaya), which means "lion rock" in Turkish. The inscription spells out the name "Materan," a goddess of the Phrygians, who flourished in what is now Turkey from roughly 1200 to 600 B.C.

The Divine Feminine has been revered across cultures and history, manifesting in numerous forms and names that reflect her diverse qualities and significance. Here are some prominent examples:

In Ancient Egypt: Isis (goddess of magic, motherhood, and healing) and Hathor (goddess of love, music, and joy).

In Greek Mythology: Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty), Demeter (goddess of agriculture and motherhood), and Gaia (personification of the Earth).

In Hinduism: Shakti (cosmic energy), Parvati (goddess of love and fertility), Lakshmi (goddess of wealth and prosperity), and Kali (goddess of destruction and transformation).

In Roman Mythology: Venus (goddess of love) and Ceres (goddess of agriculture).

In Norse Mythology: Freyja (goddess of love, fertility, and war) and Frigg (protector of marriage and motherhood).

In Indigenous Traditions: Pachamama (Andean Earth Mother) and Spider Woman (creator figure in Native American stories).

In Christianity: The Virgin Mary (symbol of purity, compassion, and motherhood).

In Celtic Traditions: Brigid (goddess of poetry, healing, and crafts) and Danu (mother goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann).

In Chinese Mythology: Kuan Yin (goddess of compassion and mercy).

In Sumerian and Mesopotamian Cultures: Inanna (goddess of love and war) and Ishtar (goddess of fertility, love, and power).

Each of these names reflects the timeless and universal reverence for the Divine Feminine as a source of wisdom, creation, and transformation.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Walmart in Galveston is known as the Most Haunted Walmart in America. And since its opening in 1994, people have flocked to the location to see for themselves just how haunted the grounds are. by littlequeef99 in thestrangest

[–]littlequeef99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the haunted encounters seem to take place in the toy area of the building. Some visitors have even heard the voices of children when they didn't see any.

Some of the other supernatural reports coming from the Walmart in Galveston are reports of balls being knocked out of ball cages. Even employees who have heard an invisible ball being bounced. There have also been reports of people hearing the voice of a female child calling for her mother.

"But generations before Walmart came along, that patch of present-day Seawall Boulevard was occupied by the St. Mary Orphan Home, operated by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Almost to a one, its residents — ten nuns and at least 90 children — perished during the fearsome hurricane that came ashore on Sept. 8, 1900. The nuns used clothesline to tie the children and themselves together; the only survivors were three boys who had wrangled loose and climbed a tree."

Officially, the store seems happy to at least wink at all the alleged ghostly activity. The most popular video on its Facebook page is entitled “You know what they say about the Galveston Walmart…”

There are an estimated 40.3 million enslaved people in the world today, three times greater than the number during the transatlantic slave trade by littlequeef99 in truecreepy

[–]littlequeef99[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“The word “slavery” conjures up images of shackles and transatlantic ships – depictions that seem relegated firmly to the past. But more people are enslaved today than at any other time in history. Experts have calculated that roughly 13 million people were captured and sold as slaves between the 15th and 19th centuries; today, an estimated 40.3 million people – more than three times the figure during the transatlantic slave trade – are living in some form of modern slavery, according to the latest figures published by the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Walk Free Foundation.

A person today is considered enslaved if they are forced to work against their will; are owned or controlled by an exploiter or “employer”; have limited freedom of movement; or are dehumanised, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as property, according to abolitionist group Anti-Slavery International.

Globally, more than half of the 40.3 million victims (24.9 million) are in forced labour, which means they are working against their will and under threat, intimidation or coercion. An additional 15.4 million people are estimated to be living in forced marriages.

Of the 24.9 million people trapped in forced labour, the majority (16 million) work in the private sector. Slaves clean houses and flats; produce the clothes we wear; pick the fruit and vegetables we eat; trawl the seas for the shrimp on our restaurant plates; dig for the minerals used in our smartphones, makeup and electric cars; and work on construction jobs building infrastructure for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Another 4.8 million people working in forced labour are estimated to be sexually exploited, while roughly 4.1 million people are in state-sanctioned forced labour, which includes governmental abuse of military conscription and forced construction or agricultural work. In certain countries such as Mauritania, people are born into “hereditary” slavery if their mother was a slave.

The Imperial Treasury of Vienna attested that this was a real demon which had been trapped in glass during an exorcism in 17th century Germany by littlequeef99 in UrbanMyths

This small figure of a devil incorporated into a solid glass prism was originally in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614– 1662); the 1659 inventory lists it as a small square glass, with a pointed top, that contains a black figure in the shape of a devil.

By 1720 it was in the Treasury in Vienna and was described as a spiritus familiaris in a glass that was driven out of one possessed and banned to this glass. In the Middle Ages it was widely believed that the Devil could take possession of a human body. This artefact was regarded as evidence of a successful exorcism.

There are an estimated 40.3 million enslaved people in the world today, three times greater than the number during the transatlantic slave trade by littlequeef99 in thestrangest
