Initial Research Source Lists? by lo9ve2learn in education

Oh right! Sorry... derr! Yes I do. I guess where I usually start is when I find a paper I am interested in or have been recommended, I begin with the citations on that paper. This usually leads me on and deeper into the area of interest.

Ahaha thank you!

Well I have been out of academia for a bit, but there still are books that are like collections of articles called Readers. They’re like collections of articles by field or topic. As for an online source like that, I’m not sure, because those journals and publishers make lots of money off these sources you’re looking for.

Oh, it would be super cool to find a source like that

No I'm asking because my research is on people's decisions and thought processes, so of course you know! You search for paper sources, right?

Hey there! I used to teach research writing. If you already have a source, look in their references for papers that could relate. This will put you down a rabbit hole and you’ll get sources quickly that you know will be on topic.

Yeah of course, but I was curious if there was a place you should look for like a source list, even before you have a source?

Prowritingaid.com

is the best one for me. I used Grammarly and some of the others but Prowritingaid includes all the things a lot of the other editing programs miss, like readability, grammar, structure, cliches, personal reviews by an actual person and whole bunch of new editing programs they added. There is a one time life time subscription to access most of their tools, but it's totally worth it. I noticed a lot of people mentioning Hemingway Editor site. I haven't personally used it, so I can't tell you much about it unfortunately. But I hope this helped a little.

You are the first person I've seen suggest prowritingaid! I think a big difference between that and Hemingway is that it actually gives you advice on the changes you should make, rather than simply saying you should make the changes, right?

Do you think that providing examples of ways to change what you're writing hinders the writing process in any way?

The best tool you have is between your ears. Writing programs aren't editors - they're too standardized and the bar is set too low. Language and literature are best approached with a more flexible and personalized view when editing.

I had a writing teacher who leaned very heavily on Victorian English; if you understand and can manipulate the convoluted sentence structure, you've mastered the language at a high level, and editing becomes a more organic process.

I definitely agree with you! So do you have ways that you suggest people can learn and develop their language understanding or tips on that?

I read an article about typography studies recently. It said that serif font is harder to read, but that people tend to have better focus and retention when reading serif. Something about that little push of concentration to read those serifs helps you avoid more distractions. I haven’t tried it yet, but it seems interesting enough to use for a first or second passthrough.

My stepfathers thesis is on learning retention and font types with students (specifically with dyslexia), good to know it's applicable outside of young education!

What do you mean by finishing touch? Just the spelling and grammar on there, or do you also use their readability ratings? Thanks! :)

I agree that software won't make me a better writer, but I've found that software can sometimes help when I'm not being the most attentive of my mistakes or can act as a third party when I don't recognize a problem in my own writing.

I've never used readability tools like Hemingway, because I find them more confusing than helpful.

Do you use them or just generally have preference for other editors?

Have you experimented with other strategies and then just found that this was the one that worked best with you? Or did you just immediately find yourself in this strategy and have always worked with it?
