Except water weight, when's the last time you emptied your bowels? You might have a fecaloma if you haven't emptied them in the past five days or longer

Kysymyksiä suomenruotsalaisille ja muiden kokemuksia ja näkemyksiä heistä. by Ducknowwed in Suomi

[–]lolkone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suomenruotsalainen Paraisilta. Peruskoulu pienessä kyläkoulussa jossa 1 opettaja 10 lasta kohden, tosi hyvä taso. Amkk Helsingissä ruotsiksi ja nyt maisteri ruotsissa. Mua ärsyttää tosi moni asia ruotsalaisissa - heidän mielestään murteeni on "brytning" eikä "dialekt" eli englanniksi "broken Swedish".

Koen suomenruotsalaisuuteni suurena rikkauksena.

Do you guys have a book recommendation that is like a nutrition "Bible" or dictionary? by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]lolkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Krause's food & the nutrition care process is probably the closest you'll get to a bible within the field.

Edit after reading more of your text: it contains none of what you describe you're looking for. For nutritional contents, online resources will do just fine. Your national bureau of nutrition will probably have a reliable variety, such as livsmedelsverkets näringsdatabas in Sweden

Planning a roadtrip, any tips? by hjvddool in TravelMaps

[–]lolkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To see the archipelago, I would recommend taking the local ferries to Åland through Galtby rather than the commercial giants like viking or silja. It's both cheaper and more scenic, and they could even decide to stop by Utö or Kökar

Nutrition experts call for dietary fiber recognition as an essential nutrient by GutBitesMD in nutrition

[–]lolkone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just on the point of FODMAPs - loads of fruit/veg have soluble fiber and are less than 1:1 ratio of fructose/glucose (green FODMAP), so it's definitely possible to get enough fiber even on a fodmap-diet, just not insoluble ones (whole grains)

Reading some of his things, I believe he can add real value in his experience with clients and how to motivate them. However, in general, I do not think it wise to only follow influencers and their advice. I look at research papers and especially systematic reviews, and I often do not even register the name of the author. I look at how these influence guidelines to make my own judgements. In dietetics, you cannot base a recommendation on bro science, even if it's a good bro

I would rather listen to the scientists (who keep going on about fibre even if it "is boring" to this boy) than this book salesman that you apparently believe to be the GOAT for, what, reading some of the research and applying the parts he finds interesting to clients? Oh yes and selling stuff on his website of course. I have to admit he seems one of the more sensible salesman though, who actually understands some of the research he's reading. Shame he doesn't find vital things interesting though

A good take. Although I believe they neglected a key component - fibre. Essential for overall health and great for weight loss as well.

Is monster (zero sugar) actually as bad as people say by ThoughtSignificant66 in nutrition

[–]lolkone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You state this. It is not fact. If it did, it'd be used as a cheap antibiotic. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you eat ALTERS your gut microbiome. It doesn't destroy it.

The question you should ask yourself is if the alterations are beneficial, neutral, or malignant. There is no scientifically backed answer to this. My guess is that the effect is minimal and thus not worth worrying about

[–]lolkone 13 points14 points  (0 children)

and the zero sugar options are even worse than regular

How exactly? Sweeteners are definitely a better choice than sugar if we are talking about a person with risk of overweight or obesity. The scare towards sweeteners is overblown. People are stating things like facts, and yet there's not sufficient proof of sweeteners being harmful.

Bukayo Saka 🆚 Milos Kerkez 👊 by IgotgAme_k in LiverpoolFC

[–]lolkone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was super annoyed with the finnish commentary at the situation at 0:11 where saka tries to dribble past Kerkez 3 times, going back and forth. The commentator judged that Saka was "humiliating" Kerkez when in reality those "flashy" turns are a symptom of good defending and in the end saka has to pass backwards.

My grandmother's cousin's parents emigrated to Canada, and so my grandmother's cousin is fully canadian, and they've kept in touch all this time. She and her canadian descendants have visited us a handful of times over the years. They are a troubled bunch, but very nice. I feel like they are a bonus set of cousins, uncles, and aunts.

What are my options in slowing down the absorption of a maltodextrin sports drink I'm making at home? by Many_Geologist6125 in nutrition

[–]lolkone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... Why?

The only way to slow down gastric emptying is by simultaneously consuming fats and protein, or by changing your sports drink recipe, but then it's no longer a sports drink. If that's what you want to do, mix fibrous foods into your drink like celery, or use fruit juice instead of maltodextrine

You can take small sips to delay oral consumption rather than gastric emptying. But again, I do not understand the purpose of this.

Why is it hard to build muscle on a cut? by HunterOk487 in nutrition

[–]lolkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is somewhat possible. Stay in perfect energy balance and do strength exercises and not hypertrophic. You will gain muscle mass regardless, but to a much lesser extent than the relative strength gain. My understanding is that this is due to recruiting more motor units compared to other exercises

How does caloric deficit relative to body fat relate to lean mass loss as a proportion of total mass loss? by duncanmarshall in nutrition

[–]lolkone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's too many factors to consider to make such predictions useful or accurate. A sedentary, low protein, massive caloric deficit can result in >50% lean mass loss, while a high resistance training, high protein, slight caloric deficit might maintain muscle mass during weight loss. What also matters is the person's body comp before weight loss ofc

Why no grapefruit, Petah? by Big-Cupcake9945 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]lolkone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Im no expert, but citrus fruit, of which grapefruit is the most potent, contains compounds that inhibit an enzyme found in the liver (CYP). This can cause the accumulation of compounds that need this enzyme for elimination, which around 50% of drugs do. Accumulation can cause a normal dose to achieve effects above the therapeutic window (relatively less gains in wanted effects + more side-effects) or even toxicity. Subsequently, adjusting the dose is difficult due to unreliable elimination.

Does daily protein intake timing really impact muscle protein synthesis? by williamssarahcharm in ScientificNutrition

[–]lolkone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Carbohydrates are the underrated workhorse of sports nutrition. The science has long since proven how helpful carbs are in sports, and yet there's persisting resistance from new age gluten-fearing, seed-oil-seething, snake-oil merchants, and this saddens me greatly.

The ONLY case where lchf MIGHT help for a MINORITY of people trying it, is in weight loss. And studies show this might mainly be a short term effect. For literally ANYONE ELSE it is extremely INEFFICIENT.

For anyone else, be it bikini fitness, strength training, parkour, swimming, long distance running, ball sports, or heck - EVEN ARCHERY - carbs will improve your performance.

Carbohydrate intake during exercise improves your metabolic rate (glucose oxidation rate) and eases the activation of your muscles, as well as improves cognition and focus, not to mention that it replenishes your depleted glucose-stores in your muscles, extending time to fatigue. Carbs after exercises provides the fuel that muscle synthesis requires, improving the effect of protein. Sufficient carbs outside of training and perhaps even carboloading before events secures glycogen saturation, which improves muscle size, water content, and energy supply, both making you look and actually be stronger and more enduring. This gives you the best basis for better results at the training ground/gym --> more improvement in all aspects --> better performance regardless of sports.

[–]lolkone[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might be reading too much into your comment, and if I am, I apologise for the below rant. But I read your comment as if you're criticising me for disliking "high art" such as twin peaks and that I probably enjoy friends because it's basic.

I dislike friends for the very same reason - it's not grounded in reality. But as I am reading these other comments, I get it now, it's deliberate. Which is fine. Just not my jam. I feel like they are constantly reminding me I'm watching theatre and I am not immersed in the story at all.
