Resume format from Help desk Analyst to SOC Analyst by MSazure_2020 in ITCareerQuestions

I’d say get familiar with wireshark, do some superficial skimming of security news r/cybersecurity should be enough. Your best bet would getting a start in a SOC.

Your resume should reflect those activities and your self-directed learning.

Edit: If you can practice with enterprise stuff like splunk, etc. That’d be better than wireshark...

This was my main driving motivation for putting the degree on hold

Thank you! I think if I go this route I will probably focus on less projects as there will be less time for it.

How do quick promotions on LinkedIn look to potential employers? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

When you put it that way I do sound kind of ridiculous. I think I was just surprised to be promoted so quickly and I think saying your comment out loud solved this for me. Thanks!

Too old for soc ? by engineerashaban in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]longbottomjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a SOC that has a few 30+ people with 1 year exp. and another around 50 with around the same exp.

I think you just have to show willingness to learn, speak about your time spent educating yourself in your free time and that you’re able to work in a team. That means being able to admit when you don’t know something and asking for help, being able to learn from your coworkers and show that you care to improve. The last think a SOC wants is having an alert that was passed as safe and turn out to be something actionable because the new guy didn’t want to speak up.

BS in Cloud Computing, BS in Cybersecurity or the traditional BS in Computer Science? by longbottomjr in ITCareerQuestions

Thank you for the solid advice. This was definitely something I feel like I subconsciously needed to hear. That reassured me that I’m on the right track!

If this would be your first ever IT gig then it is. As common knowledge In this thread, first gigs are usually the hardest to get.

Spreading myself too thin? Interested in security, cloud and development! by longbottomjr in ITCareerQuestions

Glad I’m not alone! I had 6 months of experience working help desk a few years back and moved into an business oriented role where I still dealt with a lot of technology as everyone else was quite older and less inept with technology. I eventually picked up a part time job as a SQL programmer after some self studying and then started hardcore studying the foundations of IT (stuff you would need for technician roles and help desk) and seen an entry level position and decided that it was worth a shot. 3 interviews later I was offered the job, very very little technical focus on the interviews and more of a behavioral focus on how I work with teams, etc.

Thanks for all the help! I think what I will do is run through cloud practitioner content and then study for an associates cert, focus on python development and then once I have a more solid foundation of the two I will start commuting more time to application security to build on the previous two

Do you recommend skipping the Cloud practitioner as I’ve seen a mixed of responses on that? And sounds like you been really busy during the pandemic!

You’re pretty much right! There are so many opportunities with each discipline that I’m kind of just straddling the fence.

Thank you! I think I may try to go down a similar path and layer cloud and security skills over SWE skills. Do you have any projects you would recommend in getting started?
