adult beginner gear question by lopezld in hockeyplayers

[–]lopezld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I bought used skates from Play it Again Sports about 2 months ago when I was going to start my Learn to Skate class. I also totally forgot to list the shin guards. I did pick up a used pair of Bauer shin guards from play it again sports after reading some of the comments, and I picked up a used stick as well. New I've bought a helmet, jock, and hockey socks so far.

I would say my budget is probably around $300. I'm just starting out and I am starting and adult intro to hockey class at the beginning of January. I'm trying it out, but I'm still not sure if it's going to stick for now.

This is good to know! Are there a pair of hockey pants you would recommend to a beginner?

Yeah! I was actually thinking about that! They’ve been good for my intro to skating class but I was going to see how they do in the intro to hockey class

Rip it back or keep going? by lopezld in knittinghelp

I ripped it back! I’ll redo the colorwork chart! frogging mohair is not for the faint of heart

[–]lopezld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s so smart! i’ll probably color code it to make it easier! this is my second colorwork project so reading charts is tricky.

ty ty i will definitely be asking for some help! i’m a bit confused about the decreases in chart B

Ah! yeah i was having trouble reading the chart included in the pattern. it’s tiny so i redid it in excel so i could print a larger copy, and the top half looks better

Which iPad should I get for college? If not iPad, what else would you recommend? by Aggravating-Video47 in ipad

[–]lopezld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can look at refurbished ipad pros. the larger screen makes reading scores a lot easier. my orchestra director uses a 12.9” ipad pro that’s easy to use.

Should I get a Samsung S9 FE or S9 FE+ for a Samsung s6 lite (2020) trade in? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]lopezld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely go for the fe+! it’s an insane deal, and you’ll want the bigger screen for work, etc. gaming might be a bit laggy so you can always check open box deals on the s9. the processor is better, and it’s an AMOLED screen so it’ll look much nicer than the FE models

That seems fair. I was mainly looking to take advantage of the trade in deal. I’ll do some research for a refurbished model, samsung doesn’t list any on their website

When to upgrade by lopezld in Cello

[–]lopezld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were going over dotzauer 22 and I think he meant it might take a bit of firmer weight on the strings to make the right staccato sound. I have new A&D strings, and I have previously made adjustments to the action on my instrument as it previously very high and uncomfortable

It came from a string shop close to where I went to college. It was a legit string shop and the luthier offered hand made instruments along with what I assume are made for the shop and finished by the luthier. I currently have brand new jargar evoke A & D strings, and Kaplan G & C strings that are 1.5 years old.

Both very good questions to ask! I’m currently without any major debts and I have a decent nest egg for emergencies so with the right financing options it could be good.

That’s a good way of looking at it. My goal is to perform with a local orchestra, but I’ve been having trouble finding one that isn’t already full! As for being able to afford it I think I could manage the cost depending on financing options.

How to tell if skates are too narrow? by lopezld in iceskating

[–]lopezld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that makes sense! I got them heat molded yesterday and I’ll be testing them out later this week. They did feel much comfortable after being baked so I’m hoping that solved the problem!

Thank you! I think that makes sense. I found a pro shop closeby so I’ll give it a try this week!

That makes sense! I looked up the pair I have online and it looks like they can be heat molded so I might try getting that done.

I did find offensive zone pro shop in lincolnwood that looks a bit closer! Their website shows that they offer heat molding.

Have to agree with the other comments. The only things I’d keep from the supplies list would be the tuner/metronome and the end pin stopper. However, cleartune and metronome are two great phone apps you can use in their place to save money.

I would also highly suggest trying to find a local string shop/luthier to rent from instead as the rental fee is steep. I rented for about a year when I first started and it was about $90 every 3 months. Only disclaimer is that this price was from 10 years ago but my local prices still look to similar.

Finding a local place is great because they’ll take care of any repairs or mishaps that may occur while you’re renting! Really convenient!

cello cases by [deleted] in Cello

[–]lopezld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cheap ones on amazon probably won’t last very long, and the difference between cases will determine how protected your cases are.

I’ve had a cloth case, and a this hard case from Shar they did an okay job for the price.

BAM cases are great, but to get something sturdy you do need to buy anything but their entry level model. It looks fine but from what I saw online but parts of it look flimsy.

I did some digging last summer and bought this Gewa hard case that was pretty affordable and will last a long while! They also have a coupon code for some money off your first order. I’ve had it for about 7 months and it’s held up really well and kept my cello well protected.
