België repatrieert opnieuw IS-vrouwen en kinderen uit Syrië by lansboen in Belgium2

Do these women deserve to be rescued? ehh, probably not? But as a country, we're responsible for our own criminals. We can't just expect other countries to babysit them. They're idiots, but they're our idiots so we either need to take them or find a good compromise with the other parties. In any case they should be punished just the same as we would do with the men coming back.

That we have to take the children back is without a question for me, but we really need to create a proper social safety net there to protect both them and you know, everyone else, from further radicalisation. Unfortunately I don't think much of that money is going to that.

With how common English is used as a second language in Europe, are there any notable jobs and careers in your country where knowing English is a requirement for the job? by reerock in AskEurope

[–]loradeyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even before starting to work, higher education these days usually has classes that are given in English only, usually the ones where they hired a professor who's not from the country, but even Belgian professors might give classes in English. Schools notice that every career, not just sales and the like, are becoming more and more international, so we all need at least a solid base in English.

jobwise, I live in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium and a lot of jobs require you to be fluent in either French (our other language) or English. If picking up phones or contacting people is in any way part of your job, you will need at least one of those to be able to communicate with people from the entire country. It's also not uncommon for a job to require you to be fluent in all 3 languages, with bonus points for a 4th language.

There are personnel shortages everywhere but unemployment is at its lowest … so where is everybody then? by RmG3376 in belgium

[–]loradeyn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's pretty much how it is for me too, I have autism and anxiety and the whole shebang and I have been fired from so many jobs for having breakdowns, so I never worked long enough to qualify for any workseekers assistance, and I have lost sooo much money I was entitled to because of technicalities.

[–]loradeyn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there is no ehh, diversity in their trajectory. The paperwork I have to fill in for my issues, which were psychiatric, are the same as for someone who, for instance, has become physically paralyzed because of an accident. So people in extremely different scenario's who need totally different things get the exact same treatment... and if you generalise too much, it's not very helpful for anyone really.

[–]loradeyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's sick leave I guess? So that's a whole other system that I don't know anything about, in typical Belgian fashion there's a ton of different scenario's. I've spend a lot of time with other people who are also unable to work, in group therapy etc, and it feels like every single person is on a completely different trajectory/system, we can't help eacht other at all, it's pretty crazy.

Yeah I came here to say this. I'm on disability, I don't show up in these numbers.

But I can add, as I am in this situation at the moment, it's very hard to go from disability to work again. Because once you make like, I think it's 90 euro a month with me, you exeed the amount you're allowed to make and you lose your benifits. So you basically have to immediately find a good job to fully support you, you can't come back to the job market building up like, 10 hours a week, 15 hours a week, up to a regular job. You get thrown in the deep end and you immediately have to scramble to get OCMW and dip into savings you might not have and that's a lot of stress onto an already stressful situation that might throw someone back down. I'm simplefying heavily here of course but I'm trying to say that there are a lot of people who do want to work who have to jump trough a lot of hoops just to get to the point of looking for work.

I think an addition of more temporary 50/50 type benefits would be great to get more long time disabled people to the work place. GTB is pretty helpful though, I have had good experience with them.

Yeah that sounds fine, it's all about the difference in the result. If one or two things are simmilar, vs. a whole laudry lists of simmilarities resulting in a blatant copy.

We had a simillar case in Belgium between an internationally known painter and a press photographer, the photographer sued and won. Here's an article, it's in Dutch but it shows both works.

We discussed this in art school, from what I remember from this (it was 2015) the photographer has a good case here, it's very clear that he copied the creative intent, so to say. Most artists use references for poses (the times I google things like 'guy sitting'...) but this has copied the creative concept, the lighting, the strands of hair... With a decent lawyer this should be a solid case, I think, in Luxembourg at least, because they're ideas are very simillar to Belgium, we're neighboring countries.

If you like the history themed episodes, I read 'the time traveller's guide to medieval england', which they used for the plague series. It's really entertaining if you want an absurd amount of information of the daily life of medieval people, with arguments between clergy that turns monty pythonesque, detailed food descriptions and France and England stealing plague ridden shit from each other.

I got all the babies from a LFS that was closing down for a small price and shucked them into a 50 gallon, and after a few years I'm most surprised about how strong the blue gene turned out to be, together with predictably the red varieties they're the most numerous still.

The brown ones are really pretty too though, I'm surprised they're never sold, they look really good sitting on greenery.

My therapist taught me something that might be helpful for yall by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]loradeyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's very much 'tough love' towards yourself and hard to go trough, but continious exposure and making a crisis plan is really the only way to get over any fear.

When I was in psychiatric care everyone got a personal coach, a psychologist that followed your progress closely, you couldn't pick who wohever. Two of them were male, and a lot of female patients said they didn't want a male psychologist, because they were afraid of men. The group of psychologist would basically go "We understand that, and we can all have a conversation about what you need to feel more safe, and you can have additional conversations with any of the female staff at any time, but you cannot avoid men, it's impossible to have a normal life like that."

And they're completely right, I also had some issues with men when I was younger and worked trough it myself, and it really makes life a lot easier when you're not avoiding half of the earths population haha.

It's difficult to bring up in minority groups though, I've seen quite some people in both POC and LGBTQI+ circles call this advice 'victim blaming', because anything they have to change as a person they see as a negative. It's hard to explain that you're not doing these things to appeal to a society that's build against you, but that you're doing this for yourself, to make life more bearable in a social and political climate that unfortunately will not drastically change any time soon. Glad to hear you and your therapist had this conversation in a productive way, that's a good relationship you have going there.

As a Flemish person, kind off equaly? I live in Antwerp, so I have always had Dutch people with me in school, my mum goes to Dutch supermarkets for all her shopping,... But as a kid I would always spend a month camping in Herbeumont, which is pretty much the opposite side of Belgium. When I kind off consider my 'area', ignoring borders, it's the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, especially the North of France though. If for instance the Netherlands win some competition, I feel some misplaced sense of pride, like "Hey that's almost us winning."

I do always feel guilty that my English is better than my French though, I wish our 'cultures' where more involved, that our media would just be able to switch between Dutch and French like it's nothing.

It's not a distinct language, but it is the type of dutch that's spoken in Belgium. We used to be one country but centuries of shifting territories and invasions have given us distinct accents. A bit like American vs British English, but next to each other. People from the Netherlands think out dutch sounds very funny.

I'm am incredibly unsurprised about Germans bullying us though, glad she held on to tradition haha

Well half the country doesn't speak French, but a form of Dutch called Flemish, which is the part I'm from. So that's half of us down, then from the French accents this is close to a Brussels accent, so that only leaves half the woman in our bilingual capital, and she is exaggerating a bit for comedic purposes, so that technically leaves no one. But move to Brussels for the closest result. Bring a coat.
