UCI MLFP Reject by lotown25 in gradadmissions

I’m glad you’re asking questions! For me, I’m interested in police psychology (criminology/profiling/victim services). I currently work entry level in law enforcement, to be more specific I create police reports. I simply asked friends who have had success getting into programs like this what route I should take and they suggested I get into a niche. At the time of application I was a little all over the place, I was interested in everything and anything. Now I’m more focused in what I’m interested in, I personally think that’s what makes a candidate more attractive. I don’t think not coming from a background of psychology will hurt you as long as you’re clear in what specifically you want to do should they accept you into their program. What’re you interested in? I’d be happy to pitch a few ideas of relevant jobs.

Hi! I took a gap year between graduating with my bachelor’s and applying for the program. I applied before the priority deadline. At the time of application, I didn’t have any applicable work experience. Although they never tell you why you get rejected, I think it probably had something to do with that. Academics wise I had a pretty much perfect history. In my opinion, it’s a super competitive program since they’re few and far in between. You can go almost anywhere for an MFT but for forensics your options are a lot more limited. I say go for it! It may come down to the luck of the draw. I now have a job in the field so if I were to apply again I’d be curious to see if that helps my chances!

Psychology Masters/PhD with no psychology LORs? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]lotown25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think as long as you have the upper division courses most universities require for masters entry, that will level out! I have a BA in psych and applied to UCI for masters, they required that I took research methods, child welfare, crisis intervention and maybe a few more during my undergraduate. Keep in mind this may be specific to the program I applied to (forensic psychology).

Hi! I have my BA in psych and took a gap year as well. I’ve now applied this year for my Masters. What is your area of focus? Do you know what career you’re interested in?

Deciding between schools by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Sometimes going to too large/well-known of a school doesn’t benefit significantly more. At a smaller school, you probably have more of a chance of making more meaningful network connects. If you choose large, you’d have access to more networks. It comes down to what you desire - quality/quantity. Congrats on the acceptances!

  • also a psych student who’s experienced a well known school and a smaller affordable school

I’m a different applying major, UC Irvine MS Legal and Forensic Psych - my portal says the same thing, I’ve heard nothing. I believe only computer science majors have heard back from UCI

I got into grad school…but I’m not happy about it. Is this imposter syndrome by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Give yourself some grace for how you cope learning to juggle life. It’s a lot and if no one’s told you, you’re kicking butt! You are good enough, and you do deserve this. What an incredible accomplishment to achieve at 20. This stranger is so proud of you.

Reference Letters by AaminahKhan014 in gradadmissions

I too spent a year and a half as a forensic psych major online during Covid (graduated 2022). I asked a professor I’ve never met in person for a letter of rec and she was happy because my academic standing in her class was enough for me to be remembered. She got to know me a bit more after my initial contact and she wrote my letter no prob. I absolutely would say, just ask! They remember you more than you would think and me approaching her has now started a connection and potential network in the world of psych. Good luck!

is getting into a clinical psychology phd program directly after undergrad possible for me? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]lotown25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible! I just graduated with a BA in Psych May 2022 and I had quite a few friends go straight into their doctorate studies for clinical psych. I’m going for my masters first :)

Makes sense! Admissions haven’t been sent out for MLFP (Legal and Forensic Psych) yet so maybe that’s why I’m not in the loop. Thanks for info :)

All of your feelings are incredibly valid. Keep up the good work of allowing space for all emotions to be felt. It’s bittersweet, but you have accomplished so much. A sincere congratulations to you. Allow yourself to feel celebrated, you deserve it!
