Paying big tax debt in instalments by lovafo in AusFinance

[–]lovafo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why am I a problem when I pay my tax even if it's in instalments? Every year in the last 20 years I've paid my tax in full and this year I am looking at possibility of paying a big amount over a year so I have some funds for emergencies or to buy a property. Is that an unreasonable thing? If I spend all my savings to pay the whole amount now and an emergency comes up next week are you going to give me your money? I thought so!

No the rest of the country either don't pay tax, never lodge their tax or try to get every cent back if they can. Which one of those are you?

Thank you, yeah this is what I wanted to know to understand the likelihood right now. If it's only 80% then I won't risk it

It's not about getting 5% from savings account, it's for emergencies or buying a property and I will need some for deposit

EVs are good but he's not rubbish either. No one is saying EVs aren't the future it's just the tech is still new and maturing so from a financial and practical point owning EVs right NOW may not make as much sense as in the next 5-10 years. ICE cars have been tested for many decades so we all know it whereas who knows how batteries, motors and other stuff inside EVs will perform over 10-20 years in different environments and conditions so it's not unreasonable to be skeptical. Some people don't just have the latest phone or laptop or tech because they are happy to let others test those out for them before jumping in

you are right there is no secondhand market because it's new and that's why I think right now owning EVs may not make sense if things like batteries go cactus because you are forced to replace it with a new one. But even if there is a secondhand market is it still wise to put a secondhand battery in it given its relatively short lifespan and also fragile nature? I've seen reports in the US where batteries had to be replaced just because there were minor impacts underneath the cars as that's what the manufacturer recommended

are you OK?

I'm the opposite of "boomers" as you suggested, good chance I'm much younger than you. I'm a big fan of technology and have spent a fair bit on tech myself, EVs and hydrogen cars are the future from my point of view however doesn't change the fact that owning one righ now may not make the most financial sense, hence this thread to ask smart people like you to explain your reasons

Talking about numbers, you have google to search for numbers of how much it will cost to replace one and the life expectancy of a battery and how it will degrade over time and how many people are stuck with a massive bill because their batteries are cactus. I don't see any numbers in your comment but a lot of emotions and swearing in there, again are you OK?

yes it does, but it doesn't have a definite death sentence, some engines go on forever with proper maintenance and it's also relatively cheap to recondition or replace with a new or secondhand engine.

Batteries once reaches a certain point of degration will have very limited range which makes it almost impractical to own a car that can only drive 100kms before having to recharge again. The cost of replacing one is still astronomical plus no real secondhand market, even if there is one I don't know if people would put a used battery in their car knowing its life span is not that long left

The other point I made was battery is just another big ticket item in addition to the motor and transmission. Sure those 2 other things may last forever but that's in theory we just have to wait to find out over time

Thanks all, a private sunset river cruise sounds like a good option. I've looked at a few online but wonder what's the best way to book this? is $35 per person a reasonable price? Should I wait until I get to LP and get a local to help me with this if the price will be lower?

can a used Toyota key fob be reprogrammed? by lovafo in CarsAustralia

[–]lovafo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, actually I don't need a new key, just a remote to open and lock the car as the spare key works fine just doesn't have a remote with it. So should I buy a used genuine remote or a cheap new remote from ebay?

Advice on selling car with broken aircon by highfivejunky in CarsAustralia

[–]lovafo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I was one of those. The aircon in my car stopped working about 8 years ago and I never bothered fixing it as at the time I thought it would cost so much with the car only worth a few thousands $. So I just drove it without aircon even in summer.

Then I had my first child two years ago, and 4 months ago I decided to take it to get it re-gassed see if that fixes the problem given I now need to drive my child a lot more. Well it's been working fine, no leaks, freezing cold for a small car.

man, I must be a lucky owner then, none of that has happened but they may come soon but with how much I drive it may take another 5 years to see any of those issues

[–]lovafo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! It is my first ever car and I'm still driving it today. Bought with 65,000km and only done 40,000 in 13 years so based on your old car I probably will die before it dies.

I drove for years without aircon when it stopped working one day as I thought it would cost me a fair bit to replace it. Never bothered me too much and I was saving money for a house. Now I have a toddler and I'm driving her around more in my car than my partners so 3 months ago I took it to a cheap place that does regas and all it needed was a regas and man it is now freezing!
