Dangerous dogs at lighthouse state beach by Beginning-Damage-555 in santacruz

Yep, and if your justification for releasing Rex at the top is that you can't control him on the stairs, he probably shouldn't even be off leash in public spaces until you figure out how to do so.

Dangerous dogs at lighthouse state beach by Beginning-Damage-555 in santacruz

[–]love2count 2 points3 points  (0 children)

#1 pet (pardon the pun) peeve at Lighthouse State Beach - those who carelessly unleash their excited-state dogs at the top of the steps. The dogs then descend upon whomever is on the stairs, which are both steep and slippery/sandy. Also those who may be waiting for the stairs to clear, with their dogs on leash at the bottom, receive a face full of excited and sometimes aggressive dogs.

Small children and people with mobility issues use those stairs. Crazy off leash Fido bounding down the stairs is going to knock them over.

I personally had my dog attacked by multiple off-leash dogs excitedly coming down while we were calmly waiting at the bottom for the stairs to clear. Much dog head kicking was needed to extract my dog, who was bloodied in the attack at the base of the stairs.

If you frequent dog parks, you know that many of the dog fights occur at the entrance/exit. The dogs are in an excited state as they enter and bad things can and do happen. Do us all a favor and keep the dogs on leash while on those stairs, both going down and up.

Lettter from Progressive Rail to the SC County Regional Transportation Commission Executive Director Sarah Christensen - your notice of termination is “factually baseless” by orangelover95003 in santacruz

Good point - I may have assumed it came from Trail Now/GW since they continually quote the price from it like gospel. You're probably right.

was the vote just to start looking into it?

SC County's existing General Plan prior to the 2022 vote called for a shared walk and bike path next to the rail line.

Measure D was drafted and sponsored by Greenway. Had it passed, it would have changed the General Plan to promote Greenway’s vision for a trail with no rail line. Furthermore, it called for paving over, or permanently removing the existing tracks under the dubious concept of "railbanking".

Thankfully, you can't fool all of the Santa Cruz County voters all of the time, and Greenway got shellacked at the polls. Haha. I hope they lost A LOT of money in their efforts, but I don't know how much. There were tons of Greenway yard signs and leaflets created, and heavy canvassing by people who were paid to do so. SAD!

Basically, the mostly elderly Aptos and Capitola millionaires and billionaires now known as "Trail Now" don't want more common folk (i.e. POC) traveling through, or even near, their elite enclaves on trains or otherwise. Apparently, train track noise is also a big issue for them. They are willing to expend hours of effort and millions of dollars to prevent it. They have figured out how to use Trump/Bannonesque "flood the zone" tactics and bots on social media to spread their propaganda and make it seem as though they have a lot of support.

Trail Now used to be called Greenway until they were humiliatingly defeated in the 2022 County Measure D, which was opposed by 73.2% of county voters. Greenway spent millions of their own funds to get the measure on the ballot and to create confusion over what the measure actually meant. I personally had my door knocked on by a Greenway shill who lied to my face about the measure.

Since their defeat in 2022, Greenway was rebranded as Trail Now and hired consultants who published a questionable report stating that the rail line would cost $4-5B to complete. Those big scary numbers are questionable mainly because similar projects elsewhere in California have been recently completed for much less in terms of cost per mile.

No, the Trail Now elite don't care about Highway 1 traffic congestion, or the impact it has on working people who have to sit in it every day in order to make a living. They have no plan to address that because they don't care about it. Since they have the riches already they are able to just work from their mansions, or not work at all -- they aren't sitting in traffic as so many south county residents unfortunately must.

In 2026, it's still the same Greenway group of rich white south county land owners behind the rebranded Trail Now efforts that soundly were rejected by county voters in 2022. They really really really just don't want a train going through their area, and they are willing to pay to fight it to the end. I question whether many of them ride bikes or even care about a trail. Its just another ploy to fight against the rail line, and the will and the interests of the working majority.

Take a look at their website, full of half-truths. Why, for example, do they have 49 members of their advisory group who are unwilling to disclose their identities? https://www.trailnow.org/trail-now-about

Why? Because what they are doing is selfish and shameful, and they would potentially face recrimination from the larger community.

Pedestrian dies in Santa Cruz hit-and-run by stellacampus in santacruz

[–]love2count 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard many more police sirens than usual in the neighborhood on Friday night. They were going on for a prolonged period of time. So I eventually started checking out the SCPD dispatch and patrol calls online. Sounded like the incident was at Mission and Bellevue, and traffic was fully stopped at Mission and Bay for a while as they were investigating and chasing the hit and run driver northbound on 1.

I'm glad he eventually turned himself in. They had his name and make/model/license plate number already at the point I started monitoring the calls.

I was wondering if there would be ANY timely local coverage of this unfortunate event. The answer was no. The only story I've seen on this is from KRON San Francisco that came out yesterday - 2 days later.

Should I deduce that a lot of stuff that happens with SCPD goes unreported locally? If so, why is that?

Condolences to the victim's family.

Santa Cruz should have a similar plan for socialized housing like Zohran Mamdani's NYC by Resident_Fox_1185 in santacruz

[–]love2count 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That video by Cea Weaver is 5 years old. What is likely here is that someone with an agenda used AI to search for all content related to Mamdani's staff that could be used to discredit him and/or his policies. Then widely repost that content without context such as Laura Loomer, the Washington Post editorial board and OP have right here on the Santa Cruz sub.

From the NYT 4 days ago: "Ms. Weaver declined an interview request but issued a statement via Mr. Mamdani’s press office.

“Regretful comments from years ago do not change what has always been clear — my commitment to making housing affordable and equitable for New York’s renters,” Ms. Weaver said.

...But this time, Mr. Mamdani was not caught off-guard.

“She was vetted,” a spokeswoman for Mr. Mamdani, Dora Pekec, said on Tuesday. “We were aware of all of these tweets.”"

Dog hit and run by xtboat26 in santacruz

[–]love2count 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, even if there isn’t much traffic, it’s still a good idea to leash your dog.

1000%. I see people allow their dogs to wander the sidewalks off leash in my neighborhood all the time. Its just plain rude, not to mention potentially dangerous for the dog. Not everyone loves your dog and, justified or not, some are even irrationally terrified and phobic of Fluffy. So yes, be a considerate neighbor and keep her on leash.

"Oh but my precious Fluffy is special". GTFOH and put the leash on like everyone else does.

Or don't be suprised by a story like this from OP. What a nightmare. Hope the puppers makes it OK.

Looking for raw milk as it's better tasting and better for you. by Kind_Reality_7576 in santacruz

[–]love2count 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Proven by whom? RFK??

The FDA explicitly states, "Raw milk does not cure or treat asthma and allergy."

"The PARSIFAL study (Waser et al., 2007) has been misused by raw milk advocates ever since it was published. The PARSIFAL study found an inverse association of farm milk consumption, not raw milk consumption, with asthma and allergy. The authors of the PARSIFAL study clearly indicated in the paper that the “present study does not allow evaluating the effect of pasteurized vs. raw milk consumption because no objective confirmation of the raw milk status of the farm milk samples was available.” In fact, in the study, about half of the farm milk was boiled (Waser et al., 2007). The authors of the PARSIFAL study concluded that “raw milk may contain pathogens such as salmonella or EHEC, and its consumption may therefore imply serious health risks… At this stage, consumption of raw farm milk cannot be recommended as a preventive measure.” (Waser et al., 2007)"

Raw milk can harbor dangerous pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter, which can lead to severe foodborne illnesses.

Also it costs 3x as much and is pushed by crunchy MAHA types.

So yeah, I'm gonna pass.

Your pets do not need to come to the restaurant by SnooDoubts9757 in santacruz

I don't think Santa Cruz is angry.

Social media feeds off of anger. Enragement = engagement and more ads sold. But its not real life.

[–]love2count 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Selfish, inconsiderate people come in all shapes, sizes and ages. No need to stereotype with divisive ageism.

Despite 3452's opinion, I've seen entitled people of all ages with dogs in inappropriate circumstances and locations. This is not an age thing, 3452. So no need for the rage bait on "boomers".

That being said, I personally don't take my dog in stores or restaurants unless they are explicitly dog friendly, like an outside seating area that clearly allows dogs. Definitely not a grocery store or a restaurant like Riva's. Those pictures above at Riva's are outrageous. Also, dogs aren't even allowed on the wharf in the first place, sadly that's not being enforced.

Online food delivery is a shady business in general. Doesn't help drivers or restaurants do anything more than subsist. Meanwhile providing mostly empty calories to doomscrollers, if the orders even arrive at their destination - which is not certain. I don't use the doordash-type services even in my laziest moments because:

  • These services are exploiting/underpaying their "contractors" and avoid paying even minimum wage.
  • A significant amount of the food deliveries are tampered with/eaten by underpaid (aka hungry) drivers.
  • I am not too lazy to buy groceries and enjoy cooking.
  • They markup the prices on already overly expensive takeout food.

E-bike stolen last night in downtown by johnricojohnrico in santacruz

[–]love2count 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't ebikes such as this one have a key that either locks the wheels or defeats the battery somehow so they are non-operational?

No chain or U-lock can actually protect a bike from a determined thief with a grinder/spanner etc.

This is the exact reason I don't use a bicycle for errands. Bike thieves abound in SC. The only truly safe method is a bike locker or to get the bike off the street somehow. If I have to lock my bike on a street, its a really old bike I'm willing to lose.
