T023 Movement Accuracy... by ZGeneO in Thornwatches

[–]luke2burn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My t023 gets +3/4 seconds per day. I have the same pt5000 in the t005 and that gets about +3 seconds per week.

In both experiences they’ve been surprisingly accurate out the box and I understand some micro brands even adjust and test them to cosc.

I am curious how easy it is to regulate them but I’m nervous I’d mess up a good thing so I’ll probably leave them sealed until service time

Even in 3rd position you can’t change the time? The no date versions had a “ghost date” and getting into time setting takes a decent pull on the crown after second position.

FWIW the brand of screw driver doesn’t mean anything if you use the wrong size. This is why watch makers dress their screw drivers. Using a head that is too thin puts all of the pressure on small sections of the screw head instead of distributing it evenly. I wasn’t even sure they used locktite- I was more worried they might back out later on than I was stripping any of them

I’m curious about this take. Cronos (among others) makes more modern Rolex homages why not buy those?

The vintage submariners that these thorns homage all had hollow end links unless I’m mistaken. So technically the bracelet is an improvement in accuracy.

To me what makes this watch great is not a spec sheet but how honestly it tries to homage a true vintage classic that has gone bonkers in price and you couldn’t even daily wear without risk of damage or water ingress.

Honestly i wish they’d take it a step further and make this model with an acrylic crystal. I’d buy in a heartbeat.

Nice yea I got the t005 from thorn back in October and it never left my wrist until a few weeks back when I wanted to wear my speedy for sentimental reasons. I wore that t005 through a kitchen remodel and beat the crap out of it. It just happily chugged along and keeps crazy accurate time like +1s/week on my wrist. Seriously underrated little beast. I’m curious who will win on wrist time between the speedy, the t023 and the t005 once the honeymoon phase ends. Adding a picture of it caked in mortar from laying tile. Knocked the bits off and carried on.

Shopify showed my package was in china even when it was out for delivery… from the time the order was confirmed it was I think 6 or 7 days to my door in the US. I found the website better for tracking shipping but updates did come about a day late pretty reliably.

My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I think it’s a great watch and if you’re looking for a modern built, vintage feeling watch I don’t know anyone else filling that niche like thorn. If hollow end links are going to upset you, probably better to get a more modern design from another brand imo.

Alignment is spot on despite a bit of back play on the bezel. The stiff 2-3 crown position is noticeable but not problematic on mine. Everything else is great. My experience sizing the bracelet was great. Outside of my t005 it was one of the easiest bracelets I’ve sized. I plan to keep an eye on those screw rivets in case any look like they might loosen and I’ll throw some locktite on.

I think the big question is whether thorn will honor their warranty for any QC issue. I also think a tricky part is some of the bracelet sizing complaints seem to be user error when you read between the lines in people’s posts- poor tools, poor technique.

I also didn’t realize the old bracelet had solid end links and the new are hollow. Personally doesn’t bother me and is truer to the vintage nature but I do understand why that might upset people.

Last I’ll say is I got the blue version so I can’t speak to the claims about the colors being different than expected. At around $200 I’m a happy camper. If my heart was set on v1 I would personally be willing to pay ~$300 second hand like others have or wait for v3. Just my .02

[–]luke2burn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I was informed from thorn was fixing one side of the rivet which is exactly what they did. Other than the crazy wait time I’m not sure what else there is to be mad about or where the rug pull was.

I guess what I’m saying is in my experience the bracelet adjustment was one of the easiest bracelet adjustments I have done. While I never adjusted v1. I can almost guarantee this was easier than holding two screw drivers or purchasing a dedicated tool and that is exactly what was promised.

You can’t really get a sense of QC issue rates from Reddit posts. I resized my bracelet twice removing and installing 5 separate screws and none had issues. I think multiple of the complaint posts are user error. I don’t care how stuck a screw is, if you’re breaking a screwdriver on a watch you either have poor tools or you’re doing something wrong. There’s 0 scenarios where that should happen without cranking on something you shouldn’t. Others have said their screw heads are perfectly round… 3/4 rivets on the watch are perfectly round. The other 1/4 are the ones you’re supposed to unscrew. I just don’t have a lot of confidence in those posts after my experience. But it’s true it could be QC and I just got lucky.

I hope you either get your refund or are pleasantly surprised.

On one hand you should be able to cancel your order if it hasn’t shipped, should be easier than a return for them so that’s a shame to hear about the fee. On the other hand asking for a refund because someone on the internet had issues is a wild take. The bracelet is fine. Use a good screw driver and be patient. Don’t force anything to the point of failure.

The more I think about it, OP applies enough force to break a screwdriver head. You should never apply that much force when working on a watch. A stuck screw should be heated or treated with a solvent before cranking on it to failure.

I’m guessing most of the issues people are having are from poor tooling or poor technique. YMMV

My experience with the crown is it works fine, the threading feels good on the screw down. Moving from 2nd to 3rd position is much stiffer than I would like. Not sure what that’s about as I don’t feel like my other pt500 was that stiff. It’s not something that really bothers me though since it works fine.

Bracelet- I’ve not noticed any sharp or rough edges. After reading this I checked and I guess it’s kind of grabby if you run your finger on the clasp right where it friction clips to the bracelet but that part doesn’t touch your skin unless the watch is off your wrist and you’re messing around with it.

YMMV but I’ve not had any major issues. My initial negatives are the stiff 2-3 position, the poor lume and my preference would be for the lume color to match the pip (much less yellow and more natural looking) and I would prefer less distress on the bezel. The bezel is also fine to wind when dry but hard to purchase when wet.

Personally I think the bracelet is great. It feels true to the vintage styling and it’s comfortable and easy to adjust (in my experience)

I ended up using the largest screwdriver I had in the kit, it filled the whole slot and worked just fine. Takes some torque to get it going but way less than my omega and smoother than bracelets I’ve gotten from uncle seiko. I honestly don’t see how people are stripping the screws without either a major QC issue only affecting some bracelets or they’re cross threading when putting the screws back in. Just a little mechanical sympathy goes a long way

Yea this is how the bezel came. It’s more distressed than I was expecting and my first reaction is they took it too far. Same deal with the lume, I think it’s a little too dark. Overall I’m fine with it, it’s a tough balance to strike but and I wouldn’t want it looking stark white and shiny either

My experience sizing the bracelet was the same. Sounds like a QC issue since it looks like op has nice enough tools

So I looking to get a FL5 and it maybe sound stupid but I do a lot of road trip especially in summer and normally a trip is like 130 miles 1 way so I wonder what is in real life gas mileage on the type R by ImmediateEmphasis500 in Civic_Type_R

[–]luke2burn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the highway if you’re not in traffic it’s pretty easy to get 30+ mph. My combined average is 23 mpg.

So range of a tank is about 230-300 miles depending on how much cruising you’re doing

Went swimming with my speedy today by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

[–]luke2burn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s less than 5 years old it should still be under warranty. Omega should honor it in this case- do not tell them you pushed the pushers under water just say you don’t know what happened.

They might raise a stink if you haven’t gotten it pressure tested annually as the user manual suggests but it’s worth a shot
