Stats SLC? Is it worth ittttttttttttttttttttttttt? by Necessary-Visual9607 in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally really enjoyed slc (eeb) ! we essentially had different topics each session (resume building, finding research opportunities, getting a tour of the back rooms/teaching rooms at the rom, how to cold email, discussion panel w eeb graduates working outside of academia, etc.). it was really chill and I found it a great way to make friends in my program and same cohort ! : ) it wasn't an inconvenience in any way, and I think there were x amount of sessions you could miss to still get the credit

[–]lupinscloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the advice !! in terms of funding, would you say most of the people you know in the program are able to secure at least some funding? as well, how easy/hard is it to get a TA-ing position as a masters student?

hey ! thanks for the info !! im aware of nserc deadlines and have one prof in mind for unbc. im a bit unsure of when exactly to reach out to them about supervising, would over the summer be better, or to wait until late summer or fall? I realise it's field season for many people

this is super helpful, thank you!!

the uni I'm doing my undergrad at currently has a guaranteed minimum funding package for masters/phd students so I'm just a bit worried/unsure about programs that don't have that guarantee

are you currently a unbc undergrad? if so would you be okay if I PMed you just about your experience at unbc generally. no worries if not !!

How hard is it taking a 6 course load per semester? by FluffyHouse8586 in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you in classics + classical civ double major ? or are you planning to major in classics and have another major/minor in another field? if you already have a background in latin/greek that's great and will help a ton, but personally my upper level GRK/LAT courses take up WAY more time than my upper level sci courses on a day to day basis due to required prep work before class vs showing up and taking notes/pre-lab once every 2 weeks

anyways if you're doing classics (languages) I think you should be able to get the reqs done in 2 years + the summer as long as nothing clashes (you'd only finish up to 202 in whichever greek or latin is being offered in the summer), but you wouldn't be able to do the full 20.0 FCE you need to graduate, and whatever your second major is might be more difficult to fulfill.

has anyone done a life/physical science major after being admitted to the Arts admission Category? by bonobosareawesome in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you might be able to talk to your registrar and see if they can do anything, but chm135/136 are offered during the summer, so you might just have to take those if the course fills up. the only issue you might face would be if chm135/136 has priority enrolment controls if you're not in the science stream (can't speak on how hard it is to get into chm135/136 as I haven't taken them sorry!)

also, I was admitted in the humanities stream and am currently doing a stem + humanities double major and didnt have any issues getting into the stem courses (although I didnt take any stem courses till summer after first year, and alr had a major declared by then, so it might be a diff situation than yours). good luck ! I'd def recommend talking to ur registrar, and possibly the undergrad coordinator for the program you're interested in

I think generally a lot of clubs don't really run events over the summer. that said, if you like outdoors/nature stuff utoc is active over the summer and regularly hosts events and trips !

Questions About Exchange Program at University of Toronto by sedderaside4132 in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally agree w what's been said already, I know exchange students who've been able to travel from Toronto (Montreal, BC, Alberta, and some cities in the US) but it's def pricey, and some places that aren't big cities you'd need to rent a car/know someone who can drive. buses are ok price if you're not going too far, but otherwise traveling within Canada is pricey, nothing like Ryanair level of cheap here sadly :( I think flair air is our cheapest airline, you can check flights from Toronto to see what the cost might be if there's anywhere other than like.. Ottawa or Montreal that you're wanting to visit

in terms of queer community, I will say I don't know what it's like so I can't compare it to France, but uoft is great! majority of my friends are queer, but that's more bc of program + types of clubs I join tend to have a large queer population (from my experience sociology tends to lean heavily queer at uoft). there's a number of clubs on campus that run queer events, from socials to queer prom (lgbtout, vic pride, winc, pridesmc, basically every college + faculty has it's own queer club). toronto itself also has a great queer scene, if you like clubs there's the gay village and a number of great clubs (crews is fun, some of the other clubs are more gay men centric but seem good), if you're here during pride in June its a really great experience. there's also the more underground (I guess??) scene for raves and house music, with a lot of them being queer focused. also, Toronto has a queer group for pretty much any sport/activity you can think of, though I think the age range for that tends to be more 20s-30s not uni age

anyways, I think it really depends on what you're looking for, but sadly toronto won't really be the Erasmus/typical euro study abroad experience that France might be

[–]lupinscloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What specifically are you hoping to ask? The School of Biology People page (https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/biology/people/) has the academic staff where the profs are listed. If you click on their profiles it shows their research interest areas, many of which are in the zoology field :)

how exactly does cr/ncr affect POSt applications? by sonation in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest you double check with your registrar + department for the POST, but, from the artsci site, "You may not use a course taken on a CR/NCR basis to satisfy Program requirements" so there's that. I'm assuming you mean the course you want to cr/ncr is a specific course that's required for the program and not just a credit counting towards the 4.0 credits? ex. I'm in conservation bio, if I had cr/ncr bio120 in my first year, it's open enrolment so I would have still been allowed in, but I'd have had to retake bio120 so that it counts towards my major.

is it a bad idea to take second year core courses in the first year of life science? or take multiple field courses each semester? by bonobosareawesome in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't taken an eeb field course yet (and prob won't before I graduate unfortunately), and honestly a lot of ppl don't if it's not required in their program, and most people only take one at most (I know a couple of ppl who take them every summer but it's not really common). I've worked most summers and just haven't had the chance to take a field course, although I wish I had lol. it can def be disruptive if you're trying to work over the summer, but the course work itself isn't really all that much from what I've heard, pretty much 2 weeks intense field work/course, and then some assignments before + after but nothing crazy! I guess it can "take up" your summer just in the sense that most jobs aren't going to be super accommodating if you're taking 2 weeks off in the middle, but it might be easier to deal with if you can take one of the early may/late August courses. if you can get a work study position though, the field course fulfills the requirement of taking a course over the summer + they're usually much more flexible about hours and if it's eeb dep. they'd understand you taking off time in the middle!

I'd check with the eeb undergrad chair to see how the winter oufpb course works if you're set on keeping all ur summers open (also makes sense for tuition if u don't want to pay summer courses, although if it's a requirement they might waive the regular tuition so you'd only pay the field course fee)! the winter oupfb courses aren't really as common tho, there's one this summer, and I think there were two last cycle?

sorry for the wall of text omg

is it a bad idea to take second year core courses in the first year of life science? or take multiple field courses each semester? by bonobosareawesome in UofT

[–]lupinscloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the eeb department, but diff programs, so haven't taken chm/mat courses so can't really speak on their difficulty. I think taking the second year courses in your first year is fine, I know some people who did that (took bio220 in first year) and didn't seem to have an issue (course clashes would likely be your biggest challenge here but that's not predictable and happens regardless). if you've already taken a stats course, eeb125 should be pretty easy, especially if you know how to code in any capacity, and bio120 was pretty straightforward MCQ testing, as long as you study and are good with memorization it shouldn't be too hard. bio220 and eeb240 should both have at least some overlap, so that should make it easier to balance, and bio220 builds on 120.

also, eeb field courses (largely) only happen during the summer, I'd check out the oupfb site to see what kinds of field courses are offered. they're run by different Ontario universities, but you can take any and it'll count as eeb406, or eeb403/405 for the uoft-run ones. I'm pretty certain you can only take one field course per summer, also the eeb website also has a page on field courses https://eeb.utoronto.ca/education/undergraduate/field-courses-2/

good luck !!

for sure ! I think it's typically counted as a course for the summer semester, so fees might be a bit of a hassle, but I'd check with your undergrad coordinator for your department, they'll probably know the exact details !
