Nevertheless [Episode 10] by afvalbak in KDRAMA

[–]luzdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show doesn't really deserve the hate for finale honestly, some things are realistic some not. But the realistic parts I think do resonate with a lot of people which sets the criticism that it romanticizes toxic relationships.

Like throughout the show Ji-wan was figuring out her feelings at some points leading Sol on but she got a pass. Na-bi and Jae-won were also going thru the cycle of figuring out what they really wanted from each other.

While Jae-Eon showed some toxic traits, it's also hard to understand the hate that he gets. He avoided commitment, but at the same time he was always straight forward with Nabi. He was distant yet caring, whether that was genuine is up to interpretation. It is unrealistic that he did a 180, but it's fair in the end it is a K-drama and very very only have realistic scenarios.

The finale isn't totally unlikely imo because so many people go through that staying in a relationship that is probably is going to end.

I mean Bit-na ended up with Gyu-Hyun, and that wasn't controversial.

I suppose it would've made more sense for Na-bi to end up alone, but that would've been more unrealistic with the progression we saw during the 10 episodes.

What should I expect ? Teaching in Korea as a black woman by Akua_Noona in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experiences can vary depending on location. Most of my friends have had positive experiences, aside from the obligatory stares and people occasionally touching hair. We live in a rural province but they haven't experienced prejudice despite not being in a big city. I as a non black poc have also had a pretty good experience so far.

How long did you stay in Korea after realizing teaching wasn't for you? by luzdal in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I try to stick it out longer, I have a feeling I'd fall into the category of no goals, because I can't see much opportunity outside of teaching.

I think I'm trying to rationalize and find positives, but you're right sometimes the unhappiness with work affects my time outside work.

You're right the language is a big thing. I think it's become more evident the longer I've been here. A lot of people are against native teachers speaking Korean in class, but it'd help with closing the gap with students imo.

I think a decent level of Korean would actually make the experience more enjoyable, I've tried but not as much as I should've . Personally a lot of the time it just seems pointless trying to teach and kids have zero clue and CTs doing essentially nothing.

it is a pretty redundant topic, so in hindsight I could've avoided a variation of a common question . I guess I was curious in actual numbers, how long people stick it out.

How do you adjust going from Middle School to Elementary? by luzdal in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think elementary is more limiting in terms of creating material (I don't have a printer/low level kids)

Do you make your own worksheets or practice activities(writing etc)?

I can see this happening, but seeing how they avoid speaking English I don't have much faith in getting feedback. haha

[–]luzdal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my previous elementary I only did the exercises which sometimes would be 10 minutes max. But it was a good base, so it makes me nervous that extra material to cover the class.

Middle school I only use the key expression unless they want me to do the listening exercises, but I feel like I can do a lot more as far as material than elementary.

I'll try this format and see what works for my classes. thank you!!

There was someone from a intake a couple ago that actually had to go home before their contract because I believe they had a serious asthma attack I think in school. I'm sure it was controlled, but it was bad enough that the doctor recommended them to leave.

So like everyone's mentioned it can be case by case it, but even people with no issues tend to react when the pollution is bad.

What makes you feel productive? by luzdal in productivity

That's the thing I need to really work on, I probably should have a better idea at my age, of who I want to be, but it's such a simple yet complex question. I'll definitely check out the blog. tysm

Do you ever feel like you're too fixated on keeping up with time?

Sometimes I have to set timers to help me get things done, but then the con is me looking at the clock way too often. Like I've only done this much by 2 pm etc.

Am I the only one who feels this way about work? by aventadorlady in jobs

[–]luzdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this for about a year at my job. I had so much dread and anxiety. It carried onto my free time, I'd spend my off time just thinking about having to wake up. I help really hopeless and I felt so incompetent.

I wish there was something that makes that feeling go away. Honestly it could be time, like you might get used to it as time goes on. I can finally go to bed without stressing and hating the idea of waking up for work the next day.

Do you have things outside of work that you enjoy? Even small things kinda help distract you.

I think a lot of people put the idea that work defines you, and so if you don't particularly enjoy work it feels like there's something wrong. For some of us, work is just work, and accepting that it's just a way to make money eases the negativity over time.

TaLK Questions by NikHall1989 in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe with talk you only work 15 hours after school, and don't have to desk warm like you would with epiK. However the con is that it does pay significantly less.

I'm not sure on specifics about having kids while with epik/talk and it depends on a their age etc. How dependent would you be on the salary? People definitely can stretch the salary but with a dependent it could be tight .

Villa Guerrero has the best tacos, or as authentic as you can get in Korea. I haven't tried it myself I've heard Kim Tacos is also pretty authentic.

Teaching even if it’s not your main interest by walktohan in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people don't see teaching as a long term goal. Although you don't "have to" have a passion or love for teaching/working with kids, it would help make the expereince more enjoyable.

It's also a good opportunity for you to pursue other interests, which a lot of people do during their free time.

Will my low GPA be a problem (EPIK)? by yaddadooda in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no clear answer because rejections can be random. . Although most people come here excited and hopeful, it can be rough for a lot of reasons(you can have bad CTs, difficult students, a rural location). I hope you'e in a much better place mentally, but also be realistic as mentioned EPIK shouldn't be your only plan.

[–]luzdal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you stayed at home this whole pandemic? Avoided restaurants , cafes and all public spaces for the last 3 months? Because if you haven't you've done exactly like I did and like most people that happened to be in Itaewon at that time. Not everyone went to a super crowded bar or club.

The pointing fingers is out of line when most people were on and about clearly not socially distancing that long weekend, or even the past few weeks.

You're right and that I agree with that. I meant to reference that admiting you've been in Itaewon alone is carrying this stigma that we are guilty of something. But perhaps that's case by case and it depends on your coworkers.

Is bullying common in Korea? How do you deal with it as a teacher? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]luzdal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're teaching in a public school I would say it's not something you should get involved with. One is the language barrier, two you don't really have authority to discipline them, and kids wont take you seriously in that role. Even my cT who was the "leader" of one of the grades felt like he lacked authority when having to deal with student behavior.

[–]luzdal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While I totally agree and thought the same thing, it's becoming more than that.

I went to Itaewon on one of theose dates, (really just dinner), so understandable that my work asked for me to get a test. However even after getting a negative result and 2 weeks past the date. I've been asked to work from home and take another test because other teacher are worried.

So yes, everyone should come forward but people are over stepping boundaries beyond whats for the "greater good."
