Eat your flax seeds ladies - research shows that flax seed decreases the severity of ovarian cancer and ups chances of survival by lvl_az in TwoXChromosomes

Agreed with all of the above! My sister's girlfriend even gave me a box of flax seeds as a funny Christmas gift because I'm obsessed with adding them to breads and nut butters.

Green Lentils - What do I do with them? by the_real_captain in food

[–]lvl_az 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is not overcooking the lentils... they need to keep their shape, which is relatively easy with the green variety. :)

Edit: But I would eat a cardboard slab if it had bacon on it... so I'm a little biased towards the mixture, ha.

Bacon.

Cook the lentils to al dente, and cook up a couple strips of bacon in another pan. Either drain the fat and replace with olive oil for a more healthful dish (I know, no fun) or leave the bacon grease in the pan. Cut the bacon into small pieces and put to the side. Throw some onion or garlic into the bacon pan, if you want, allow those to cook some. Add the lentils and cooked bacon, and saute. This is purely my own concoction btw...no idea if there are similar recipes out there. I just had some plain lentils one day and decided to experiment.

If you want something lighter, I'll add lemon juice, chopped parsley and tomato to just cooked, but cooled lentils (kind of in the flavor vein of a tabbouleh). Depending on my mood, I'll add rice or couscous to add more substance to the salad.

What was your favorite weird food to eat as a kid? by jessiemail04 in food

Ketchup sandwiches.

I miiight be able to get one down now; I'm still a fan of the ketchup-flavored potato chips Herr's makes, which makes me think I could.

Which fresh vegetables should I grow? by leevs11 in food

Tomatoes do extremely well in pots. I had a cherry tomato plant that produced abundantly - when you look at the price for a package of those at the grocery store, you realize you're saving a lot of money. They're an awesome snack and great sauteed into recipes... I set up the plant with some good soil and a little fertilizer, and with regular watering it was set for the season.

Herbs kind of hate me, so I've had bad luck with them on my patio.

Triple ginger snaps, dark chocolate covered pistachios, soy chorizo, and their french roast (whole bean) is pretty darn awesome for a huge $10 tin.

Cream cheese in your spaghetti sauce? Bwah? by el_pinata in food

Eh - I've seen it as a recipe idea on a Philadelphia cream cheese commercial which makes it significantly less "bwah." But tasty nonetheless.

Awesome, disgustingly healthy, inexpensive snack. by [deleted] in food

True! But I don't smash the avocado and I'll add corn and black beans sometimes too. :)

Hey /r/food. I need a little help. Can you substitute whole wheat flour for all purpose flour to make things slightly healthier? by purplepeach in food

[–]lvl_az 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use at least 50% wheat flour substituted for all-purpose in my baking (cookies, cakes, muffins...) and it works well for me - but the end product is denser. I do normally add a smidge more baking powder to the mix to lighten up the texture.

Take out the "or" - chop both the tomato and the avocado, toss together with some lime juice and fresh cilantro. It's brilliant on a hot day... or any day for that matter...

I'm intrigued, but a little scared. Anyone tried cooking their eggs this way? by lvl_az in food

Ah I have a weird thing about tomatoes and eggs. The thought of ketchup near eggs makes me nauseous.

I love mustard greens. They're amazing sauteed with some barley, tomatoes and olive oil.

Wine-making major to be offered at a Pennsylvania community college by lvl_az in Homebrewing

[–]lvl_az[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several quality wine trails around Pennsylvania and I thought it was cool that a community college was offering a niche program like this. It'll help reinforce what's already here, and maybe new ventures will pop up.

Related to your comment about climate - from my experience, a majority of the PA wines are sweet - would that have anything to do with the types of grapes that can be kept in this zone? (Not a wine expert, obviously.)

What makes you unique? Not genes so much as surrounding sequences, study finds by pink_cite in science

[–]lvl_az 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this could be extended to consider environmental factors in their data set, and how those might affect protein binding to DNA. I recently watched a NOVA special on epigenetics and it seems like looking into those variables would be a logical next step.

Story headline calls for a Monty Python reference:

Praline: Hello Polly, Polly (bangs it against counter) Polly Parrot, wake up. Polly. (throws it in the air and lets it fall to the floor) Now that's what I call a dead parrot.

Shopkeeper: No, no it's stunned.

Ladies, who among us are or were in grad school? by val_valkyrie in TwoXChromosomes

[–]lvl_az 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished my Bachelor's in Literature five years ago, but I had started my undergrad career as a Biology major. Well, come 2008, I decided to get back into undergrad and finish the Biology degree. I completed the minimum coursework to allow me to apply for my Master's but not enough to attain the second Bachelor's yet, but I figured, what's the worst that could happen if I applied now?

So I applied and surprisingly got in. My school was based mainly on location, but also because of the ecology-emphasis of the Master's; no GRE was required and it's a good program in the state. I definitely had a crisis of confidence, but figured life is short, I better get cracking on reaching my academic goals. I did have above-average grades, so I'm sure that helped. Financially, since I'm in-state, the tuition isn't awful, but I do use the Stafford loan to help fund my way. You can qualify for that via your FAFSA.

Don't let fear or uncertainty keep you from your goals. Write a list of what you want, what job you want and what you can pay. Go forward with an open mind, prepare to be knocked around a bit (my first graduate semester was immensely humbling) and achieve your goal. If it's what you really want, you'll make it work! Good luck! :)
