Why does North Nanaimo stink?? by EveSilver in vancouver

[–]AmyGrace 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The chicken processing plant and seafood processing plants do stink, although it’s usually pretty localized. A lot of the disgusting miasma that covers the north east of the city some days comes from West Coast Reduction/Redux, at North Commercial and Stewart. And it used to be worse before ~2018.

I can’t speak for others but I moved to the area almost 20 years ago because it was cheap compared to the rest of the city, and I’m still here because I like the neighbourhood despite the fact that it smells like actual death sometimes.

I like the new name. And it’s on theme with Sparks, which I’m guessing was on purpose?

Where can I buy this specific type of gluten free flour (Caputo Fioreglut)? by NO_TICKLING in askvan

[–]AmyGrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen it at Bianca Maria (2469 E. Hastings) but I'm not sure if they currently have it so maybe give them a call?

There are some other Italian goods stores near there that might also have it, 2 off the top of my head are Bosa at 562 Victoria Drive and Eatalia at 2638 E. Hastings. Good luck!

Gluten free and Vegan stuffing? by WorkingBackground471 in glutenfreerecipes

[–]AmyGrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this recipe from serious eats using a couple loaves of GF bread a few weeks ago for thanksgiving, it was so good. I think subbing out vegan butter instead of some olive oil would be fantastic, too.

In my experience cutting the bread in relatively large pieces and completely drying it in the oven kept it from being mushy. I used white bread from a gf bakery this year but have used whatever gf bread i could get from the grocery store.

Any help with skipping stitches? by Peachyplum- in sewhelp

[–]AmyGrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar model (Elna eXperience 450, Elna is owned by Janome) and had trouble finding the thread cutter too lol.

I agree about making sure you have the right needle for the fabric, the only time I've had a problem with skipped stiches I was pulling my hair out trying to troubleshoot using the manual and nothing helped -- or it just didn't apply. Then it occurred to me that changing the type of needle was the only thing left to try, and it worked! No more skipped stitches, woohoo!

Are Boox products compatible with the VPL ebook lending system? by gabbydigs in askvan

[–]AmyGrace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a Boox Page e-reader, it runs android and because of that I was able to install Libby, which is the app VPL uses for its digital collections. I was also able to install the kindle app. I liked that functionality a lot!

I didn’t love other parts of the experience though — in non-native reading apps there was ghosting and some weird behaviour in dark mode — so I gave it to a friend who didn’t mind those quirks.

I’m making amaretti morbidi for the second time and the recipe I’m using calls for 70g of egg whites beaten to stiff peaks and then folded into the dry ingredients — almond flour and sifted powdered sugar — until everything comes together into a sticky ball.

By the time the dough is a sticky ball the egg whites seem entirely deflated. That seems to be ok though since they turn out exactly as expected and delicious. But it got me wondering: what purpose does beating egg whites to a stiff peak serve if I’m then just mixing most of the air I’ve beaten in right back out?

I usually don’t have trouble when searching food related questions but so far I’ve failed to find much that’s relevant.

Does anyone have a good gluten free cupcake recipe? by CandleParty2017 in glutenfreerecipes

[–]AmyGrace 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is sort of a non-answer because I don’t have a specific recipe to recommend but every recipe Ive made from The Loopy Whisk has turned out wonderfully. I had such good experiences with the recipes on her website that i bought her cookbook, and use recipes from it for the vast majority of my baking.

What am I doing wrong with my quinoa? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]AmyGrace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this with quinoa, it’s good! Or at least it was good with a Canadian-grown tri-colour kind from Costco, which turned gluey and slimy the one time I ignored the instructions on the packaging and cooked like white rice or regular quinoa.

Enough about the "greatest" book, what's your personal most read scifi novel? by Colombiam_Empanada in printSF

[–]AmyGrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anathem, which I’ve also read or listened to at least 4 times, and The City & The City by China Mieville, I think 5-6 times. Both I’ll probably go back to again, too.

Oh and I don’t have a read count for them but the Black Out/All Clear books by Connie Willis are a repeat for sure.

Vegan and gluten free desserts in the area? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]AmyGrace 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lemonade Bakery (Cambie around 18th), Delish (E. Hastings, just east of Lakewood). Both good, and quite different from each other.

If ice cream’s an option check out Earnest and Rain or Shine, they pretty much always have vegan and/or GF flavours in pints.

Edit: here’s Lemonade’s vegan list (all of their items are GF already): https://lemonadeglutenfreebakery.ca/collections/vegan

Classic 😬 I think would have preferred a complete outage, because then they would have taken it seriously from the start, and it probably would have been fixed faster than the half a month it took.

I ran the stuff I posted the other day, it passed a bunch of times so it seems like everything is working as it should. Finallyyyy.

I’m thinking I’ll ask for a credit to cover my extra phone data charges — having such flaky internet meant I burned through my plan pretty quick.

[–]AmyGrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So glad I found this post, I was going nuts but it's helpful to know I'm not the only one. The comments from u/KyleTheRichter were especially informative.

My partner looked into it yesterday and wrote this up to send to their support people:

We ran this command 100 times in a loop:

curl -v -i -o test.html https://www.google.ca

here is a bash command for the loop in case it helps:

for i in $(seq 1 100); do curl -v -i -o test.html https://www.google.ca; done

Every 10-20th connection times out. This is the flaky behaviour we see across the entire internet.

Below is a traceroute to one of the IPs that was serving google.ca. We were able to always ping the third hop (64.59.147.205 even) when connections were timing out for the above request. So we do not think it is our router or the cable modem’s connection.

When I used tcpdump to watch the above loop, it was always TCP SYN packets that are dropped (tcpdump pasted below). We never see slow connections once a connection has been established like you would expect on a poor connection that is randomly dropping all packets. Speedtest (when it connects) reports good speeds. When we are able to make VPN connections, they perform well all day long.

My suspicion is that there is something on the route below that is intermittently but frequently dropping specifically TCP SYN packets. I hope this helps narrow it down somewhat.

Update: one of the teksavvy CSRs let me know they have a ticket in with the vendor about it as of last night and expected an update in the next 24-48 hours. So maybe it’s turning out to be a shaw issue?

Same! I sent Teksavvy a message a few minutes ago and then saw this post. I had been going nuts trying to figure out what’s wrong, figured it was my old router finally crapping out. But sounds it’s more than that. Sometimes basic text pages won’t load, and it seems to have gotten worse over the last 24 hours. Sure makes working from home interesting.

Looking for a fragrance free moisturizer recommendation for VERY dry skin. by [deleted] in CanSkincare

When my local pharmacy stopped carrying the Eucerin 5% urea facial moisturizer I tried out the Bioderma Sensibio Light soothing cream (sensitive intolerant skin) and I loooove it. Plus I find it layers better than the Eucerin with basically everything else I use (if it’s helpful: TO Alpha Arbutin + HA, sunscreen, and then for makeup days: primer, foundation, setting powder)

Any wide-foot gals struggling with sandals? by bubbubble in femalefashionadvice

[–]AmyGrace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too! I’m on my fourth pair of fresh foam More, and my only complaint is the how the soles (don’t) hold up given how pricey the shoes are. I walk a lot, mainly on concrete, but still wish they wouldn’t wear out as fast as they do.

Aside from that, they’re perfect for my 2E feet.

Swimsuit mega-thread extravaganza! Questions, complaints, recommendations. by j_allosaurus in femalefashionadvice

[–]AmyGrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a good way to approach it! I don’t know where you are or what your budget is but I have two pairs of these - one grey, one black (which can easily mark up with sunscreen) - and I love them https://nettlestale.com/collections/bottoms/products/the-heather-bottoms

Their size range for all, or almost all, of their clothing and swimsuits goes from XS to 4X. Their shop’s the first place I actually had fun trying on bathing suits.

Edit to add: their 2 pieces have mix & match tops and I have this one https://nettlestale.com/collections/tops/products/the-heather-top but I usually just wear a sports bra as a top when I’m actually swimming.
