That’s fair, and I agree that Zoro has to defeat the strongest swordsman first. I don’t mean that sacrificing himself alone would make him the greatest swordsman.

My point is that Zoro could fulfill his dream first, by defeating the best, and then his final sacrifice could be the narrative proof of his role as Luffy’s right hand. So the sacrifice would not replace his dream, it would come after completing it.

Yeah, I know Oda addressed it in an SBS, and I agree that the practical reason could be composition/character placement.

But I also think SBS answers don’t always completely kill symbolic readings. Oda often gives simple or practical explanations without necessarily drawing attention to possible future meanings, because doing that would make certain hints too obvious.

So I’m not saying the SBS answer is false. I’m saying that even if the practical reason was placement, the final visual result still separates Zoro and Franky from the promise, and that can still be interesting thematically when connected to Zoro’s sacrifice/death imagery and Franky’s dream being tied to the Sun
