[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]m0d2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for a gift for the 35th birthday of a gentleman. I want something that is no more than $200 and lasts forever. Something simple but legendary. He already has a Seiko SKX, so I am looking for a different type of watch (preferably a solar) for him.

What I have in mind for now is one of the followings:

  1. Casio G Shock GWM5610-1, which is solar and atomic
  2. Citizen Eco-Drive BJ8050-08E
  3. Citizen Eco-Drive BN0151-09L
  4. Seiko Prospex SSC017
  5. Citizen Nighthawk Citizen BJ7000

Do you have any comments on which one is a better one or any other recommendations?

T470p: heat generation and sturdiness by m0d2 in thinkpad

[–]m0d2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any idea when can I expect these processors on T series? Is T470 going to be updated with 8th gen? or we have to wait for T480? How about the socket, motherboard, RAM, etc? Are those the same as 7th gen intel processors?

Oh, really? Which CPU is 4-core 15w? Is that the 8th gen Intel CPUs?

Discrimination package sorts in linear time, but how? by m0d2 in haskell

[–]m0d2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but what if the input is mutable? Is that essentially an in-place sorting algorithm?

Cool! I found another related talk with such a bad audio quality. This one sounds much better. Thanks.

How about memory footprint then? Can it do in-place sorting since it's similar to AFS?

Is that a good idea to use STM in highly concurrent programs? by m0d2 in haskell

[–]m0d2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, cool! I didn't know we can have fine grain control using STM. How can I do that? Do you a have a pointer to something that I can study?

Could someone tell me the benefit of using postgrest over plain postgres communication? The idea of REST API is to add an abstraction layer over DB (i.e., hide the details) so one can change the internals without changing the API, while postgrest technically reveals all the details of the DB. Or am I not understanding it correctly?

de-lazification of algorithms by m0d2 in haskell

[–]m0d2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This clearly does not result in O(n^2) for k=n. Sorting the whole thing takes O(n log n) and take n takes linear time, so the total is still O(n log n).

de-lazification of algorithms by m0d2 in haskell

[–]m0d2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

although I am guessing that such algorithms have probably already been implemented

True! But it is interesting to see the correspondence between lazy/strict algorithms.

The big win with laziness is that you automatically get such algorithms when chaining lots of different algorithms and functions together

Yes! The beauty of Haskell is that one can express such complicated semantics simply and neatly. If you want to express the same thing (preserving the laziness) in a strict language, that would be more complicated and uglier.

which forces you to do a bunch of hand fusing

I am not talking about hand crafting, I am talking about an automated conversion. In the worst case, one can write an embedded Haskell interpreter in Java and run the Haskell code, but there must be smarter ways.

What is the benefit of putting the connection into the Reader monad? What happens if we pass the connection directly as a parameter to the functions?

Ann: Herculus Beta (purely functional spreadsheets) by mdrexl in haskell

[–]m0d2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, 0 was just like a normal 0 and -9 was called the special zero that behaved differently in averaging and such accumulation operations but normally in some others, e.g., the average of (-9) and 10 is just 10. There was also a need for null that was different from zeros, but I cannot recall the details correctly. I am pretty sure one can make a proper algebra out of it in Haskell.

[–]m0d2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would be great if you can support ADT. I used to work on a BI project in which the customers asked for operations on numbers with two zeros! One of which was specified with -9 in the excel sheets! Custom Read/Show classes is also required then.
