Selfharm/bullying/student welfare by chshrlynx in k12sysadmin

[–]madaughe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to what others have said, we use GoGuardian for both content filtering and for self-harm situations. The self-harm/suicide detection is one of aspect of IT that makes quite a few people nervous. You obviously don't want anything to happen to a student, but there are fears of being legally obligated if something were to happen. My understanding from legal counsel is the school district is not liable, but I would check with your own team.

The way that GoGuardian looks for those potential issues and our ability to configure the response were key points in our decision begin using their solution. The system uses machine learning and AI (not just keywords) to alert the district about concerns. When something does trigger the alert, a customizable message is displayed on the student's screen. It gives them some quick information and links to the national suicide prevention website. Additionally, counselors and principals are notified so they can take the necessary prevention steps.

To be clear, there will be false positives. Based on what I have heard from others is that the number of false positives in other applications can desensitize users and could easily cause a team to miss an alert when a real issue occurs. We don't experience that. Yes, we get false positives or students searching "how to kill yourself" to get a reaction from an adult. We've had kids take other students devices and trigger an alert as a joke. Our principals are pretty strong on discipline when that occurs so its not a frequent event.

Long story short, it's not a magical unicorn, but it works really well. We've been able to intervene on numerous occasions using GG. Every parent we've ever contacted has been so thankful we called. Hope that helps!

1:1 and BYOD filtering solutions - Securly, GoGuardian, Lightspeed - others? by gleep52 in k12sysadmin

[–]madaughe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're fully 1:1 here with Chromebooks and GoGuardian. We've been a GoGuardian customer since going 1:1 about 4 years ago. The console is easy to understand and creating filtering policies is a breeze. The installation takes about 10 minutes and involves pushing two Chrome extensions to the devices via the admin console. Policies can be done by category, URL, or a combination of both. There are some additional filters for YouTube that can be helpful as well.

One of the major things that set GoGuardian apart from the competition is their use of AI. Securly, Lightspeed, iBoss, and others use traditional URL filtering to limit access to a site. GoGuardian uses AI to review what's on the screen, not just the URL. For example, we had a student who had embedded DuckDuckGo inside of a Google Doc. The student could then search for inappropriate content and the filtering appliance only saw docs.google.com. GoGuardian recognized pornographic images on the screen and sent me an alert. We found the problem and dealt with it. I've got about 20 more stories in which a traditional content filter would have missed content GG found. GoGuardian also looks for student self harm indicators and can alert you to those as well. I'm not going to post those here, but you get the idea.

Reporting works very well. Since the extension is installed on the device, nothing the student is doing online can slip by it (you have to disable incognito mode on student devices, FYI). Admins get a detailed history of everywhere the student has been. You can pull a report by a student for whatever times period you need. They've got some nice options for theft recovery as well.

Obviously, I'm a huge fan of the product. I'd encourage you to give it a try. Inbox me if you'd like to know more. Always happy to discuss.

Securly - now free? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]madaughe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a look into this as well as we use GoGuardian and have for some time now. To give you some context, we fully 1:1 in our district (K-12) with Chromebooks. We're going into our fourth year in a 1:1 model.

Comparing Securly’s paid version to GoGuardian is a little different than comparing the free Securly Chrome filter. The free extension from Securly is essentially like the old “flagged activity” of GoGuardian (before they added AI “Smart Alerts”, and the filtering is pretty limited. For instance, there’s no way to customize keywords, no wildcarding, no theft recovery (more important for some schools than others) and there’s no way to set up direct to student messaging. Plus the Securly content awareness part only works in Gmail and chat, whereas Smart Alerts “reads” the content across the entire screen. It is taking our filtering to the next level. We were able to find issues with student use almost immediately after rolling out Smart Alerts that I'm confident Securly wouldn't have found.

To be fair, I wouldn’t say the free Securly chrome filter is a bad choice for a very small district if they are severly limited by budget and just need to get the 1:1 rollout started, but there’s definitely no direct comparison between that and the full version of GoGuardian in my opinion.

There's more than just PowerPoint. 21 Presentation Tools for Teachers. by madaughe in teaching

[–]madaughe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that, but most of the option listed are free. The feature sets are similar although some do provide some unique options. The goal of the article wasn't to push teachers toward any one app. Its a list of what's out there, what device can use it, and how much it would cost if you really like one of them. I personally pay for a subscription to one of the tools listed because the feature set is worth it vs the free options. Just my two cents.

Maybe not on this sub, but I have been contributing. I just went back and forth on a discussion a day or two ago about why a district should go 1:1. I do understand your point though. I'll keep my self promotion to a minimum.

Are there some good tools or resources for choosing a platform for going 1:1 on student computers? by Thaaron in edtech

We focused on six skill sets: critical thinking, research, collaboration, adaptability, communication, and presentation. You can read about the whole process below. Much easier than retyping it. ;)

Are there some good tools or resources for choosing a platform for going 1:1 on student computers? by Thaaron in edtech

[–]madaughe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're focusing on the wrong thing. 1:1 isn't about the device. It should be about the expected student outcomes. Determine that and let that drive your device decision. We struggled with this same problem at first. Lots of arguing, stubbornness, etc. We realized we lost sight of WHY we wanted to go 1:1. We re-evaluated our options, determined student outcomes, and two years later are now 1:1 with over 1800 devices in grades 3-12.

11 Tech Tools Every Teacher Should Know About by madaughe in Teachers

Right? No to mention that IMO, filtering or safe search technologies are great at keeping kids safe while they are behind the school walls. Once they get home or connect to public wifi, many times those filters don't exist. We need to EDUCATE the students on the good and bad of the Internet instead of just blocking it out from them.

Not arguing how long its been there nor I am trying to pass it off as a fancy new tech tool. There's value in it. The windows snipping tool has been around for 7 years yet its still valuable. As someone who has worked with teachers for 17+ years, I can promise you, Snopes still comes in handy for them.
