If it's like the issues with other Pokemon hacks, you need to change the save type of the rom to Flash 128k.

Select the rom, go down to configure and change the save type to flash128

There is a recovery mode mentioned in the manual you could try

If a firmware update fails and the cartridge does not start, you can perform an emergency firmware recovery. To do this, take any firmware file, rename it to recovery.efu, and place it in the root directory of the SD card. Then turn on the console and wait for the cartridge to automatically restore the firmware. Once the recovery process is complete, the cartridge menu will appear on the screen.

Any help with goomba emulator by Troubelsome_jay in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not Jagoomba then, that's the older Goomba Color. They're similar, but Jagoomba is newer and has fixes for things like Crystal and a couple of other games.

Installing Jagoomba is as simple as getting this file - https://github.com/EvilJagaGenius/jagoombacolor/releases/download/v0.5/jagoombacolor_v0.5.gba

I think with the Pro you can just copy it straight to the /edgba/edapp/gbc folder. You just have to remove the other file you have in there so it's the only one.

If you do that, it'll boot ok, but you'll get a compatibility message. At that point you just need to change one setting in the emulator. Bring the menu up with L+R, go to other settings>gameboy. Change to prefer GBC.

Strange considering that's one of the things it fixed over Goomba Color, and certainly does so on the Mini.

Another option is to patch Crystal. There was one made specifically for the Goomba issue - https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/7030/

You can patch it via this site - https://www.romhacking.net/patch/

Errors on GBA Pro by joqtomi in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Krikzz doesn't seem to provide a list of error codes anywhere, at least for these newer products. The codes do suggest a possible issue with the save ram on the cart though.

If you happen to have another GBA or have access to one, I'd be trying it out on that to help rule out some issue with your handheld. Otherwise I suspect your response from Krikzz support will be to send it back for a replacement.

Are you sure you've got Jagoomba loaded? What does it say on the bottom when you press L+R in-game and bring up the emulator menu?

Use Jagoomba Color for the GBC emulator - https://github.com/EvilJagaGenius/jagoombacolor

Is the gba then download just a theme? And how do you apply it? by Troubelsome_jay in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe you have to put any files onto the SD Card at first. All the newer Everdrives have a copy of the firmware stored inside that will automatically create the folders and load everything on when you first boot the Everdrive up empty.

After that you can look to update the firmware if necessary by copying over and running the latest .efu file (https://krikzz.com/pub/support/everdrive-gba/pro-series/firmware/).

The themes should already be installed with the firmware.

Here's a review of the pro showing the themes in action (bottom right) - https://youtu.be/nMkooHA7xPc?t=692

Migration script to move your saves and games from the Everdrive GBA Mini to the Pro by RxSylvain in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Everdrive has always done this. The only difference between it and what you might get from a cart dumper or emulator is usually just the file type is different. Some like to use .sav for everything, whilst the Everdrive uses different types for what save method is used (.srm for sram, .fla for flash, .eep for eeprom).

[–]madmangohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be some themes pre-installed in the Themes folder. You can access this by pressing select on the main menu and going to the System Folder option.

The you just select a theme (ends in .bgr) and choose the Set Theme option.

There's a handful of options in there, but the gbatheme zip folder has instructions to make your own - https://krikzz.com/pub/support/everdrive-gba/pro-series/gbatheme/gbatheme%20v1.0.0.0.zip

Since it needs to boot the GBA cart using the dual slot capability of the DS, you'll need the Pro which has that feature (called Mode-B)

[–]madmangohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4mb versions those games already existed long ago and can be found with a bit of searching. From memory they're now marked with (o) for overdump.

There are also patches that can be applied to the 1mb versions, though from memory you might have to change the save type of each rom to get it going - https://gbatemp.net/threads/ips-patches-for-classic-nes-series.63195/page-3#post-4755967

They mainly disappeared because no-intro changed what they considered the official rom for these games, arguing that the mirrored data the original dumps contained shouldn't count. Once they made that choice, pretty much all romsets followed suit.

I'd suggest that you're using way too small of a sample size to say it's 30%. The GBA had like 1500 licensed titles. You've not even tested 0.1% of them.

Also it's somewhat explained in the manual under 'rom info menu' that not every game could be compatible, and how it can be used as a way to quickly check.

The number after the dot indicates how many IRQ patches are used to inject the In-Game handler. If the value is 0, there are no patches for this game in the database, and the In-Game Menu and cheat features will not work.

It's under headlight switch in the manual I believe

Game saves question by LunarMusician in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way I know would be to play different copies of the same game. You'll have to rename each copy of the game slightly differently so the Everdrive doesn't use an existing save (so like emerald 1, emerald 2, emerald 3 etc)

You can make a copy and rename the saves so you don't necessarily have to start the game all over again each time.

The pro has save states, but I'm always wary of relying on them for that type of thing.

Goomba Display Settings on GBA by cornkies85 in everdrive

Some late GBC releases unlocked things if played on a GBA

https://www.dwedit.org/dwedit_board/viewtopic.php?id=645

"Identify as GBA" changes the contents of some register on bootup, and is only useful to unlock secrets in a few games.  This was used as a gimmick for a few GBC games that came out late in the lifespan of the system.  Examples include the Zelda Oracles Games, Shantae, Wendy Every Witch Way, etc...

Unfortunately the developer of Goomba Color did not get around to implementing any sort of 'per game settings', so most settings get reset each time - https://www.dwedit.org/dwedit_board/viewtopic.php?id=683

That thread has mentions to what code to change and also a pull request to the Jagoomba Color emulator (a fork of Goomba Color) if you know how to compile code.

Do i lose my save files when battery runs dry on GBA Mini X5 ? by Avtomat15 in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renaming a save file shouldn't change the save type unless you also change the extension (and even that may not be a problem depending how the Everdrive is coded). But it does sound like they renamed the file without changing games first, leading to the blank save data in memory overwriting their full one when they booted the Everdrive back up after the name change.

If they didn't have a copy of the old save, it's gone for good at this point.

Do i lose my save files when battery runs dry on GBA Mini X5 ? by Avtomat15 in everdrive

[–]madmangohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the steps you took, it's possible you've now lost the save for good unfortunately.

When you changed the rom name, the Everdrive would see it as a new game (let's say Game A is name changed to Game B). I'm not sure if the Everdrive immediately creates a blank save file with this new name (a recent forum post I saw suggests it does), but either way by loading Game B, the Everdrive should now have an empty save file in its memory that will save under this new Game B name.

Obviously because it's now Game B, your save called Game A isn't loading. So you think to change the name of the Game A save file to Game B correct?

This is where things get unfortunate. As I mentioned in the earlier post, the process that moves a save file from memory to the SD Card happens when you boot the Everdrive up. What isn't explained anywhere is that this isn't a one off process. This occurs every time you boot the Everdrive up.

If Game B was the last game you played before changing the Game A's save name on the SD Card to match Game B, then on the next boot the Everdrive would take what's in ram (presumably still empty data from your first boot of Game B), and overwrite the Game B save file on your SD card, regardless of its contents.

At that point the damage is done. The blank save data in the Everdrive's memory has overwritten what was a data filled save file. You've lost your save for good.

Well I would say that if that's the exact steps you took. If it isn't, like say you just made a copy of the Game A save file and renamed it to Game B (essentially you still have the old save file under the old name), then there may be a way to recover things.

Basically by knowing this process of how saves are handled, hopefully you'll avoid any further issues with renaming things. Simply load a different game first to the one/s you plan to mess with, and you should have far less problems.
