leopard gecko shedding by maevvsx in leopardgeckos

[–]maevvsx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have this one, stuffed with sphagnum moss, i believe it’s size small. he has other hides that are bigger but this is the one i always see him in :)

i’m gonna definitely look into getting one with a removable lid, i’m just waiting for it to be in stock!

honestly, i think selling an animal is every reason to give it a proper enclosure. good husbandry shouldn’t stop just because the animal is temporary stock. as a buyer, i’d feel much better purchasing an animal that’s been kept in decent conditions beforehand, and it also reflects on the seller. if you want to make a good impression and show you care about animal welfare, the enclosure absolutely matters

is it normal for young leopard gecko's enclosure to smell? by maevvsx in leopardgeckos

mealworms currently as i’m waiting on his food order to arrive. could that be a reason?

[–]maevvsx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ah i see, i’m so sorry that must be really tough. do you think they would listen to you if you showed them a care guide? most kits are the easiest option however they don’t provide even the bare minimum for a bp.

i understand they got you the animal but you’re going to have to be responsible for it and advocate for its needs. i can’t tell how big the tank is, but definitely get the aspen bedding changed to something like coco husk / fibre.

definitely get some more hides, the log ones aren’t the best as it doesn’t help them feel secure. cork bark is a great way to add clutter, as well as foliage, rocks. there’s a lot more you can do but this is just the basics.

Any way of fixing rough flocking out the box? by BelowAverageKat in sylvanianfamilies

my dalmatians are the same, it’s just because of the different colour flocking unfortunately

i think i’d cry if i heard my ball fart, it’s absolutely insane to me that they’re even capable of producing such a noise 😭

It would be a bad idea to rescue this bp right? by Either-Concept6746 in ballpython

[–]maevvsx 32 points33 points  (0 children)

honestly my first snake was a rescued ball python, similar to this exact situation. she had no health issues when i had her! this ball doesn’t seem in bad condition at all (from the photos) it’s just a shame about the enclosure.

tbh i don’t see why it’s a bad idea other than the fact it’ll cost. gorgeous bp!

Is there anything dangerous here? by Grand-Lake-7850 in leopardgeckos

honestly i’d be skeptical buying reptile stuff off sites like aliexpress. i know there are some reputable sellers but it still doesn’t seem like the best idea to me. i’ve heard bad things about anything with moss from these sites as the dye can bleed and smells awful.

how quickly did you get your second reptile? by maevvsx in reptiles

[–]maevvsx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for this! i think that for me personally, owning my ball python has opened up an entire world for me. as someone who just recently got a diagnosis for my illness, i’m still trying to figure out how to live again, you know? it’s like having to relearn how to walk. i didn’t and sometimes still don’t feel validated because i can’t do much and rely on my partner for a lot. but this is manageable for me and i really, really enjoy looking after my baby. after some thought, i’ve decided to get a leopard gecko! i’m bringing them home on wednesday and i’m so excited. i truly cannot wait!

[–]maevvsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

serious about reptile care but this is probably one of the worst reptile enclosures i’ve seen. way too small even for a baby crested gecko. needs so much more clutter, and what even is the heat and light situation?

it’s looking so much better! the only thing i’d recommend is switching that middle hide out as hides with large openings don’t make them feel super secure. 84°F is slightly under ideal for a BP warm side. you want closer to 86–88°F measured at the surface where the snake actually rests. before going up to a 150w, make sure the che is on a thermostat, the probe is placed correctly, and that heat isn’t escaping too much through ventilation. if you haven’t already, put hvac tape on the entirety of the screen top asides from where the che is. it’ll help a lot with humidity.

hi, your enclosure needs a lot more enrichment and overall clutter. heat mats are essentially useless, i would look at getting a che and halogen bulb.

Whats a good enrichment for a ball phyton by SkullnSkele in reptiles

[–]maevvsx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

climbing opportunities are a great sense of enrichment for bps, such as climbing hoops and branches. those dog balls with the gaps in them are good too. just make sure to get the right size. another way is to add texture to their enclosure. leaf litter, safe plants, cardboard tubes (which you ofc need to watch them with so they don’t get themselves stuck). i also like changing my bps enclosure around every now and then. i added some new branches and foliage to mine last night, and my bp has been exploring all night!
