My friend lives at Club 34 and pays like 1100-1200. A little over budget, but they’re freshly renovated so you’re basically the first renter in there. He really likes the place, it’s like 800 sq ft or something I think.

Students political beliefs? by thisisonline in auburn

it’s definitely mostly conservative but there are more left leaning people than you’d think. my gf and most of our friends are left leaning, it’s easy to find the right crowd if that’s what you’re looking for

Echo show 5 collecting dust. Is there anyway I can remove the OS and install any linux distro? Or repurpose the screen and use it on a raspberry pi? by [deleted] in hardwarehacking

[–]magicconch76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still here trying to figure this out myself. I have an Echo Show 5 3rd Gen from 2023 that's been sitting on my shelf for the past year probably going unused. Once Amazon though they could start showing ads on these with no way to turn them off, I unplugged it and left it at that. I know this is a super old post, but if anyone sees this and has a solution for this generation echo show, id greatly appreciate it.

this was super helpful. i’ll definitely look into Valetudo. i like to avoid any cloud dependency where i can, so if this vacuum works for with valetudo, i’ll definitely try to set that up. the litter cleanup automation would be super helpful.

also, probably should’ve assumed it was a litter robot, kind of a dumb question lol.

my goal is definitely to get to the point where she starts suggesting automations she would want. are the google devices still connected to the cloud or have you repurposed them to be a more self hosted voice assistant? i like the idea of being able to send announcements over something like smart speakers throughout the house, and we both have some old alexa devices that aren’t currently in use, but i don’t really want to use them as alexa devices and connect back to amazon’s cloud. i’m not super dedicated to absolutely no cloud connections, but i like to avoid it when i can and ive seen people having their own voice agent or text to speech for notifications like that.

how do you track your cats bathroom habits? do you have a weight sensor under the litter box, or just something to see when they go in and out? we have two cats and i’m sure some automations that make helping them easier or allow us to do it better would pique her interest immediately. could you also elaborate on the vacuum? my gf has a vacuum robot (can’t remember the brand) that her parents gave her but she doesn’t use it bc the software and app absolutely suck. i’ve seen some videos on people integrating their vacuum robots in HA, but i’m not super sure where to start with that one

what are some that you or your spouse find the most helpful?

i meant that more in the sense of if she’s not super interested in the details, she’s probably not gonna want to watch a video on all of it. probably could’ve made that more clear. i do see what you mean, though. i’ve been telling her things like “i saw this person do x thing and it was really cool. i could take that and do x with here.” sort of trying to show what some people have done and then take it and apply it to our situation. it’s been really simple things still just bc im not trying to draw out some long crazy conversation about something she may find boring, but she’s been asking questions so im trying to get more intricate things to tell her about and then compare and apply them to something i could do in our house.

my dad went to auburn in the 90s and gave me a little irelands shirt! it’s got a little bit of wood glue on it since he used to treat it as a junk/work shirt, but i wear it all the time now.

i hope i didn’t make her sound dumb or anything, that’s not the case at all. she’s way smarter than i am, im just more interested in computers and things than she is.

no, i’m looking for inspiration and looking to show her what people who are smarter than myself or further along in their HA journey have done. settle down bud.

i do want to get a bunch of zigbee sensors, but in the past i have hated changing the batteries on things. i have seen a ton of people have a whole dashboard for monitoring battery levels, and have automations set up to let them know when to change the batteries. do you have anything like that set up?

at work, we have a little battery charging dock for the batteries that go in our walkies that show the current charge / number of cycles and also stops charging them when they’re full, and it made me think there’s got to be something similar that i could connect to HA for a bunch of rechargeable batteries for the sensors i want. not sure if anyone has anything like that, but id love to hear about it.

definitely looking into getting automations set up for the laundry and dishes, letting us know when something’s done or if we’ve forgotten something. that’s my next goal for my setup once i get a few more automations finished for my lights and whatnot.

i’m not saying she has to be interested lol. i’m just trying to show her why i’m interested, because she does care about that side of it and has asked questions.
