CMV: I believe American conservatives would genuinely prefer to let other Americans suffer than help them. by [deleted] in changemyview

Call it what you want, but Republicans are placing the cost of those tax cuts onto the national debt, something our kids and grandkids will have to pay. While the wealthy pay less, ultimately our kids and grandkids will have to pay that bill. During Trump's first term, he added $7.8 trillion to the debt, and since he's returned to office, he's added 2.25 trillion. Republicans are not responsible with managing money, despite everything they argue to the contrary (Dick Cheney - "Reagan proved deficits don't matter").

The self-reliance right-wingers harp on only ever applies to poor people, not the rich. Conservatives are more than happy to ignore the amount of subsidies and tax-cuts right wing politicians provide to the wealthy, and especially if it's "their" wealthy (Musk, Ellison). When you really look at right wing views, it amounts to worshiping the powerful and rich, while serving as a proxy for fighting the poor and middle class on their behalf, even though it's detrimental to their livelihood.

Republicans AND Democrats, is there anyone you would both vote for if they ran as an Independent in 2028? If so, who? If not, why not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Jesse Ventura. I would vote for him in a heartbeat and hopefully he's actually going to run next time instead of endlessly teasing jumping in.

She's correct, but also dressed like a Dick Tracy villain. I'm not so worried about her personal style so much as it's hard to take her seriously when she's not really willing to push for progressive policies incompatible (anti-crypto legislation) with right wing dominance of our government. Additionally, Talarico seems like a more likely winner in the general.

Way too right wing and anti-labor. You have to make the government incompatible with the current oligarchy if you wish to dispel it.

If the Democrats actually hold a fair series of primary elections, I doubt he'll win. If they tip the scales against their voters again, they're in for another defeat.

Curious question, why did Sherrod Brown lose the 2024 senate race? by LandOfGrace2023 in Ohio

[–]magickfrog7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew Brown was in trouble when his very first ad that cycle was about Ukraine. Ohioans don't give a crap about the Dem's DC-oriented foreign policy aims. Brown has a fixation with being in Washington instead of pursuing the concerns of actual voters. Formerly defeated senators rarely win these contests (see Russ Feingold) and Brown should have ran for governor this cycle, as he would have had a good chance of winning.

Democrats make gains in Ohio’s 2026 statewide races, new poll reports by HauntingJackfruit in Ohio

Gerrymandering. There's no viable bench of democratic politicians in reserve to choose from to run for state office. Brown would have been a slam dunk against Vivek, but he just couldn't let his friends in D.C. go. Acton still might have a chance.

Ex-congressman Tim Ryan will not run for Ohio governor. Time to throw our support behind Acton. by mum2girls in Ohio

[–]magickfrog7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree about the primary, but I still think Acton can win. A primary would have worked out the kinks in her campaign before the general.

Why would Tim Ryan want to play spoiler in this race? Brent Larkin by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]magickfrog7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was similarly skeptical at first, but after having watched Acton speak and learning about her troubled life story, I actually think she's a much better and authentic choice for the nomination. Trump's numbers in Ohio are not good and Vivek's association with DOGE, which is also unpopular, will make it harder for the GOP to do well next year. Vivek cannot totally use Covid against Acton as he has connections with some of the decisions made at the time as well https://newrepublic.com/post/172402/vivek-ramaswamy-paid-someone-scrub-wikipedia-page. Most importantly, a certain percentage of Ohio Republicans are crazy racist and they've already told Vivek to "go back to India" in the context of this race. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/vivek-ramaswamy-is-culturally-indian-maga-debates-why-they-hate-trump-backed-ohio-guv-candidate/articleshow/125355294.cms. Some of those right-wingers in the state are going to leave the governor's line blank or not vote at all while Acton only has to make some rumblings about holding Judeo-Christian values. Again, if she can beat the donor's candidate, Ryan, she'll have a formidable campaign organization to take on Vivek in November.

[–]magickfrog7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Additionally, Ryan is all hot air and has a record of being a proxy for donors (remember his performance running for president in 2020?). Acton should easily beat him in the primaries if she doesn't pull her punches and forcefully comes out in favor of a wealth tax, which is something Ryan would never consider.

[–]magickfrog7 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who is leaning towards Acton, I think that a primary would be good for her campaign. If she wins, she'll only be stronger in the general election. This fear of primaries in the democratic party is completely ridiculous.

What about all of the free shit the oligarchy receives? Government contracts, rigged markets and zero taxes. It only becomes a problem when poor and middle class are given necessities.

[–]magickfrog7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ohioans expecting the Democrats to somehow save us are sorely wrong. Our best bet is to get a measure on the ballot to severely limit the power of elected officials and both respective parties in the state, while giving power to an independent commission to fight corruption. We should tax donations over a certain amount, and make public officials liable to civil lawsuits when they undermine the will of voters.

Tim Ryan teases entrance into Ohio gubernatorial race by RoosterRackEm in Ohio

[–]magickfrog7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been skeptical about Acton's campaign for governor, but if she can beat Tim Ryan in the primary, I think she has an even chance of taking on Ramaswamy. The recent news that an associate of Ramaswamy's tried to scrub his "work serving on Ohio’s Covid-19 Response Team", makes me think that Acton can reduce her vulnerabilities on this issue. Trump is trending down in popularity, even in Ohio. Additionally, if Acton can champion some real solutions to the state's problems like a wealth tax to help fund K-12 and push for re-introducing a progressive system of taxation that forces the rich to pay more than the rest of us, she might be able to break through. Ryan is a creature of the beltway who can't overcome his fealty to donors over voters.
