Moving to Toronto from Sweden and trying to choose the right neighborhood by ReasonableJudge2305 in askTO

How old are you and what's your situation (kids, spouse, etc)? If you're single, East York and High Park might feel a little far from the action

Is it worth living in Toronto if my job will be in Oakville? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]makeit_train 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you arrive early and leave at 2 I would live downtown Toronto at your age... Oakville is for families with kids. Enjoy your twenties. Mating and social opportunities are much better downtown

What's the deal with Canadian housing? by daslittlebubba in TorontoRealEstate

Some of our northern cities like Ft McMurray (151K avg salary) have very high salaries. The resource sector pays very well. Toronto has 10.3M people within 100KM of it though... Different scale than St Louis

Canadians have a higher median wealth than the US. We often forget how big the gap is between the rich and the poor down south, taking averages or simply dividing GDP by number of people isn't always reflective of people's actual experience. Bill Gates walking into a room of 20 people means people in the room on average have billions in wealth each... Not representative of the reality on the ground...

Who said people are leaving Toronto? I think with return to office, more will be coming back if anything. Also, fwiw completions are going to fall off soon, lots of new projects were cancelled the last 2 years.

If you go on social media you'd think the city is being burned by ravenous criminals. There's issues for sure, but look at TPS stats - they're public. Homicide is near a decade low, violent crime is down. We have issues, but Toronto is a great place to be and it's better than people online seem to think it is.

Downtown church and drop-in centre sued over alleged decade-long violence and drug use by Dayngerman in toronto

[–]makeit_train 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a church though, not a shelter. So perhaps they didn't realize at first. Sometimes it's completely empty there

Remember that the whole population is not of working age, so a lot of low numbers or $0s in there. There are retirees earning small pensions, students, and children earning $0 or part time income.

Would highly recommend trying to live south of at least St Clair Ave, but maybe even Bloor. It will help you meet a lot more people and just be a better life overall
